STRIKING EVENT.

God has many ways of bringing stray sheep home to his blessed fold; and we should make it our daily prayer that he would overrule all events to his own glory and the salvation of men.

An officer in the artillery owes his conversion to God to the following affecting event: when at Woolwich academy, there was a young man, who was marked for his reading of the Scriptures and love of prayer. This brought upon him the sneers and scoffs of his companions, and they rejoiced when they had it in their power to bring him into trouble. At last the time for doing this seemed to be come. One morning, at the usual hour of their being obliged to rise, this young man did not get up with the rest. They thought he was asleep, and they were pleased to think that one so regular and precise in his habits, should oversleep himself; and they resolved that as far as it depended on them, he should suffer. Finding at last that he did not rise, some one went to call him. But on drawing back the curtain, he was found a corpse!

The young officer above named, was so struck, that he began in good earnest to

tread in the steps of his departed friend.

THE DANGER OF DELAY.

The rosebud, yet unblown, may lie
Wither'd across the way;
The lamb amidst the flock may die,
The grave unthought of may be nigh
To children young as they.

Oh! let not one short day be past,
Without a pardon sought;
Many a day has proved the last,
And suddenly their lot been cast,
Who little fear'd or thought.

Now, Saviour, bless me ; then, whate'er

My life or death may be;

There shall be left no cause for fear,
For if removed from living here,

A heav'n remains for me.

IMMORTALITY.

The sun that lights the world shall fade,
The stars shall pass away;

But I, a child, immortal made,
Shall witness their decay.

Yes, I shall live when they are dead, Though now so bright they shine; When earth and all it holds have fled, Eternity is mine.

For I shall never, never die,
While God himself remains ;
But either live in heaven on high,
Or bound in hell in chains.

If heaven and hell ne'er pass away,
To Christ, oh! let me flee;
If pain be hard for one short day,
What must forever be!

AGAINST LITTLE SINS.

Who can tell by what degrees
Sin winds slowly round the beart,

Till lost man his spirit sees

Bound and stain'd in every part!

Oh; when once the conscience yields, No one knows where sin will stay, How far, o'er forbidden fields,

Lead the heart from God away.

He, whom dreadful crimes disgrace, Murder, theft, and all that's vile, Once upon his mother's face

Beam'd in innocence a smile.

Little, may be, did he think,
Trifling on the verge of sin,

He should venture from the brink,
And ere long plunge boldly in.

Ob beware;---for no one knows
Where an evil thought may tend ;
Soon to sin, and pain, and woes,
And a dark untimely end.

"And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.-LUKE xxii. 31, 32.

It might be truly said by our Lord, that this was the hour of the power of darkness. This was the hour, when Satan had power to bruise the heel of Christ. All his enemies were gathering against him, joined together under the banner of Satan. It is not only those who are called the "children of the wicked one," that he controls to do his will. He has his agents even amongst
