The therapist's problem is to get the child to give up the disturbed behavior that is protective of his parents and to motivate the parents to give up a system of interaction that is unfortunate but has a useful function in the family .
Husband : And you are aggressive sometimes , like last night ; I thought you were indicating a little bit of aggressiveness . And I wasn't particularly interested for one reason or another . Wife : Yeah . Husband : You give up .
In other words , even in regards to sex , because you take so much upon yourself , you don't give her a chance to do the things that she's supposed to do . So you have to give her a chance . Husband : It hasn't appeared to me that way .
