PREFACE.

THE Author is induced to offer these trifling effusions of his early muse, to the notice of the Public, by the very flattering reception his Poems have met with hitherto.

In submitting these " Early Poems" to the tribunal of public opinion, the Author feels conscious that some indulgence will be extended to them, when it is remembered that they were written at an age when rhythm is exuberant, but judgment immature, and reason infantile :—that they are his earliest efforts, and were intended rather to amuse than instruct; to give pleasure rather than matter for severe thought; and have only been preserved on account of the early associations they tend vividly to recall.
