The men of Nineveh, &c. shall condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonas.-Matt. xii.

41.

Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.-Matt. xviii. 2, 3.

Son, go work, &c. yet he said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went, &c. ye, when ye had seen, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.-Matt. xxi. 28, 29. 32.

And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice and he went out and wept bitterly.-Matt. xxvi. 75.

Judas repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces, &c. saying, I have sinned.-Matt. xxvii. 3, 4.

Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.-Luke xiii. 2, 3. 5.

Joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance, &c. there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth, &c. The prodigal returned.-Luke xv. 7. 10. 17-21. 24. 32.

If one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead.-Luke xvi. 30, 31..

If he trespass against thee seven times, &c. and turn again to thee, saying, I repent.-Luke xvii. 4.

It behoved Christ to suffer, &c. that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations.-Luke xxiv. 46, 47.

When they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said, &c. Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.-Acts iii. 19.

Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness.-Acts v. 31.

Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.-Acts viii. 22.

Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life, &c. and a great number believed and turned unto the Lord.-Acts xi. 18. 21.

We preach unto you, that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God.—Acts xiv. 15.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent.-Acts xvii. 30.

I kept back nothing, &c. testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus.-Acts xx. 20, 21.

But shewed, &c. that they should repent, and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. - Acts xxvi. 20.

Not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.

Rom. ii. 4.

Though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, &c. ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing: for godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation, not to be repented of.— 2 Cor. vii. 8-10.

I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness, &c. which they have committed.-2 Cor. xii. 21.

How ye turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, &c. -1 Thess. i. 9, 10.

In meekness instructing them that

oppose themselves, if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth, and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.-2 Tim. ii. 25, 26.

To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, &c.-Heb. iv. 7; iii. 15; Ps. xcv. 7, 8.

Let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, &c. for it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, &c. if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh.-Heb. vi. 1. 4-6.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you: cleanse your hands, ye sinners, &c.-James iv. 8-10. Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him, let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, &c. James v. 19, 20.

zealous therefore, and repent.-Rev. iii. 2, 3. 19.

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues, yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils and idols of gold, &c. neither repented they of their murders, &c.— Rev. ix. 20, 21.

And men were scorched (or burned) with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, &c. and they repented not to give him glory, &c. and repented not of their deeds.—Rev. xvi. 9-11.

CHAPTER XXXII.

OF DEATH; OR THE LAYING DOWN of THESE TABERNACLES.

AND the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground, (or dust of the ground.) -Gen. ii. 7; Job iv. 19.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground: for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.-Gen. iii. 19.

The Lord is not slack, as some men count slackness: but is longsuffering to us-ward: not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.-2 Pet. iii. 9.

Thou hast left thy first love: remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do thy first works or else I will come unto thee quickly, &c. thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, &c. Repent, or else I will come, &c. I gave her space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not: behold, I will cast her into a bed, &c.-Rev. ii. 4, 5. 14-16. 20-22.

I have not found thy work perfect before God; remember therefore how thou hast received and heard: and hold fast, and repent, &c. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be

I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.-Gen. xviii. 27.

Sarah died, &c. and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.-Gen. xxiii. 2.

Abraham died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people, &c. Ishmael, &c. gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people.-Gen. xxv. 8. 17.

Isaac, &c. said, Behold, now I am old, I know not the day of my death. -Gen. xxvii. 1, 2; xxxv. 28, 29.

Rachel died in bearing Benjamin by the way; buried there; and Jacob set a pillar upon her grave.-Gen. xxxv. 17, &c.

Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one

hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been.-Gen. xlvii. 9.

He mourned for Joseph, refused to be comforted, and said, I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. -Gen. xxxvii. 34, 35.

Jacob ordered Joseph not to bury him in Egypt, but to carry him to the burying place of his fathers.--Gen. xlvii. 29, 30.

Joseph wept for his father Israel when he died, and there was great mourning and lamentation for him.Gen. 1. 1. 3. 10. 17.

Aaron died in the top of the mount, &c. all the house of Israel mourned for him thirty days.-Numb. xx. 28, 29; Deut. xxxiv. 8.

Balaam said, Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!-Numb. xxiii. 7. 10.

And the Lord said unto Moses, &c. When thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered; for ye rebelled against my commandment.. Numb. xxvii. 12-14; Deut. xxxiv. 5.

O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!-Deut. xxxii. 29.

Joshua said, Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth, &c.Josh. xxiii. 14; 1 Kings ii. 2.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, &c. and Samuel said to Saul, why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?1 Sam. xxviii. 3. 15.

David, and his men with him, mourned and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan, &c. -2 Sam. i. 11, 12.

When David's child was sick, he fasted and prayed: he said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live? but when it was dead, he rose up and did eat, and said, I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.-2 Sam. xii. 16, 17. 20. 22, 23.

David wept for Absalom his son,

and cried, O my son Absalom, my son, &c.-2 Sam. xviii. 33; xix. 4.

The child shall die, and all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave.-1 Kings xiv. 12, 13.

Elijah stretched himself upon the dead child, &c. and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee let this child's soul come into him again, (or into his inward parts.)-1 Kings xvii. 21, 22; Acts xx. 10.

We are strangers before thee, &c. our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.-1 Chron. xxix. 15; Zech. i. 5.

Job said, Why died I not from the womb? &c. for now should I have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest with kings, &c. there the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary be at rest, &c. they hear not the voice of the oppressor.-Job iii. 11. 13, 14. 17-19; vi. 8, 9; x. 18, &c.

Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed, &c.—Job i. 21.

Behold, he put no trust in his servants, and his angels he charged with folly; how much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth, &c. doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die even without wisdom.-Job iv. 18, 19. 21.

Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? &c. Swifter than a weaver's shuttle, &c. Thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.-Job vii. 1, 2. 6—10.

We are but of yesterday and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow.-Job viii. 9.

My days are swifter than a post; they flee away, they see no good; they are passed away as the swift ships; as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.-Job ix. 25, 26.

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help : his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth in that very day his thoughts perish.-Ps. cxlvi. 3, 4.

When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish.-Prov. xi. 7. The righteous hath hope in his death.-Prov. xiv. 32.

Boast not thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.-Prov. xxvii. 1.

How dieth the wise man? as the fool. Eccles. ii. 16.

A time to be born, and a time to die, &c. all go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again; who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?-Eccles. iii. 2. 20, 21.

As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, &c.-Eccles. v. 15, 16; Job i. 21.

The day of death is better than the day of one's birth: it is better to go to the house of mourning, &c. Eccles. vii. 1, 2; iv. 1, 2.

No man hath power of the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war.-Eccles. viii. 8.

A living dog is better than a dead lion, &c. There is no work, &c. in the grave whither thou goest.-Eccles. ix. 3-5. 10.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.-Eccles. xii. 7.

thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth: the living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day.-Isa. xxxviii. 1, 2. 10, 11. 18, 19.

All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it. Isa xl. 68; James i. 10, 11; 1 Pet. i. 24.

That thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass.Isa. li. 12.

The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away: none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.-Isa. lvii. 1, 2; 2 Kings xxii. 19, 20.

Lamentation and bitter weeping: Rachel weeping for her children, because they were not.-Jer. xxxi. 15; Matt. ii. 16-18.

Son of man, behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down, &c. My wife died, &c. this was for a sign.-Ezek. xxiv. 16-18. 24.

Go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end.-Dan. xii. 13.

Your fathers, where are they ? and the prophets, do they live for ever? Zech. i. 5.

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: Odeath, I will be thy plagues! &c.-Hosea xiii. 14; 1 Cor. xv. 55.

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, &c.

Jesus said unto the man on the cross, Verily I say unto thee, to-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise, &c. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.-Luke xxiii. 42, 43. 46; Ps. xxxi. 5.
