10 Now if Timotheus come, see that he fear for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.

11 Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren.

12 As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time. 13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

terms, God has in soine measure removed for me an extensive and powerful hinderance to the conversion of the heathen, and there are many counteracting its entire removal, which, therefore, I 10 must remain to effect. But if Timothy shall have come to you before I do, see that he may communicate with you without fear; for he is labouring in the work of the Lord, even as I am; let no one therefore despise him on account of his youth; but conduct him forward in peace that he may come to me, for I and the brethren here expect 12 him. But as to our brother Apollos, I and the brethren have greatly besought him to go to you, and notwithstanding this, his determination on the whole was not to go now, but he will go when there 13 is a good opportunity. Bearing in mind what I have here written to you, be vigilant against being surprised into idolatry, persevere in the faith of the Gospel founded on the doctrine of the resurrection, act as men in the use of your spiritual gifts, be, as you thereby may, strengthened above the power of

NOTES.

CHAPTER I.

V. I. 1. "An apostle, called by Jesus Christ," xλntos aπOOTONOS Ιησου Χρίστου, -that is, a called apostle of Jesus Christ, or one specially called by him. There is an allusion to St. Paul's miraculous appointment, on which he found it necessary sometimes to insist, as he had not been called during our Lord's abode on earth.

II. " Manifestly revealed,”

-see Acts, ch. xxII. 14. This cir cumstance is inserted in the paraphrase, because it is implied by the allusion to the Apostle's miraculous appointment, and by which allusion it was sufficiently intimated to the Corinthians, who were doubtless acquainted with that part of his history.

III. "Our Christian brother,”

-Christians are properly called

brethren, since, as such, they derive their spiritual existence, and inherit spiritual blessings from the same person, as children do their natural lives and patrimony from their human father.

V. 2. I. "To the persons composing the church of God" τη EXHAŋoiḍ TOU DEOUThis phrase means, literally, the society of εκκλησια του persons called together from the rest of the world, and united in the belief and worship of the true God. In this sense it might have been used of the Jewish people before the promulgation of the Gospel; but as since that event God is worshipped in truth (see the use
