EXODUS. CHAP. I. 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 5 And all the souls that descended from Jacob, were & seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and became exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10 Come, let us deal wisely with them: lest they multiply, and it shall come to pass, that when there falleth out any war, they will join with our enemies, and fight against us, and depart from the land. 11 Therefore they set over them taskmasters, to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure-cities, Pithom, and Raamses. Deut. 10.22. 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in to them. 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses. 22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, every son that is born ye Acts 7. 17. shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. 1 Heb. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go, and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Take this child away and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name 1 Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. 11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Approach not hither: put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy 3 or, prince. ground. 14 And he said, Who made thee 2 a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyp- c. 18. 3. tain? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face: for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this d Gen. 15. 14. in Egypt, and have heard their cry by thing, he sought to slay Moses. And he put his hand into his bosom again, and drew it out of his bosom, and behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is know that he can speak well. And also behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak to him, and put words in his mouth and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall speak for thee to the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and & thou shalt be to him instead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thy hand, with which thou shalt perform signs. 18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in law, and said to him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see whether they are yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace. 19 And the LORD said to Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt; for all the men are dead who sought thy life. 20 And Moses took his wife, and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand. 21 And the Lord said to Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou perform all those wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in thy hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou shalt say to Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my first-born. 23 And I say to thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou shalt refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy first-born. 24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp 5 stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and ⚫ cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. 26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision. 27 And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him. I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. 3 And they said, & The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the LORD Our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, hinder the people from their works; go you to your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves. it touch. c. 3. 18. 1 Heb.
