THOU that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Evening, and morning, and at noon will I pray and cry aloud, and thou shalt hear my voice. In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee; my voice shalt thou hear in the morning. Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as incense. I will remember thee in my bed, O Lord, because thou hast been my helper. I yield thee thanks, Almighty Lord and everlasting God, because thou hast vouchsafed to preserve me this night, not according to my deserts, but according to thy sacred mercy. Grant me, O Lord, so to pass this day in thy blessed service, that the

homage of my duty may please thee. I lift up my heart and my hands unto the Lord in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hands of her mistress, so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God until that he have mercy upon us. Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. Give thy angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. Shew me thy ways, and teach me thy paths. Order my steps in thy word, and let not any sin have dominion over me. Hold up my goings in thy path, that my footsteps slip not. Put into my mouth a right and becoming speech, that all my words, and looks, and gestures, and deeds may be acceptable in thy sight, and in the sight and hearing of all men.

O God of kindness and love, very pitiful, and of tender mercy, Father of mercies, rich in mercy towards all those who call upon thee; I have sinned against Heaven and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son; I am not even worthy to be made one of thy hired servants, no, not the meanest of them all. But I repent,

alas! I repent; help thou my impenitence. And if there be any consolation in thy love, I entreat thee by the bowels of thy mercies, by the abundance and riches of thy grace, by the great love wherewith thou hast loved us, be merciful to me a sinner, be merciful to me the chief, the most miserable of sinners. Deep calleth unto deep; the depth of our wretchedness unto the depth of thy mercy. But, O Lord, where sin abounded, may grace much more abound; overcome our evil with thy good; let thy mercy rejoice against thy judgment on our offences, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

II.

An Evening Prayer.

ET my prayer, O Lord, be set forth in thy sight as the incense, and let the lifting up of

my hands be an evening sacri

fice. For thou, O God, hast granted me thy loving kindness in the day time, and therefore in the night season I will think

on thee, and make my prayer to the God of my life. O thou that saidst, Let there be light, and it was light, open mine eyes, that I sleep not in death. Make me to commune with my own heart upon my bed, and search out all my ways. That I may lament my sins as thy servant David did, and cry unto thee for mercy. Consider, and hear me, O God, and hide me under the shadow of thy wings, and let my soul rest in thee. Amen.

Blessed art thou, O God, who makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to praise thee: Who hast not cut off my life this day, nor shut me up in the grave, where all things are forgotten. I will not suffer my eyes to sleep, nor mine eyelids to slumber, till I have prepared my heart for my God to rest in. For thou art my God from my youth, thou hast numbered out my days and nights that I might serve thee; thou makest them that fear thee to have rest in safety. Return thou unto thy rest, O my soul, for God taketh care for thee. Lord, let me make my prayer unto thee in an acceptable time. Teach me to remember thee in my bed, and to think of thee when I am waking. O thou who neither

slumberest nor sleepest, watch over me this night. Give thy angels charge over me, that the spirits of darkness may not come near me, that no evil thoughts may betray me, nor any sad or sinful dreams disturb my quiet. For into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit, for thou hast redeemed me. O keep, then, what thou hast redeemed, and let not thy servant for whom thou hast died, perish for ever. Amen.

III.

For the Graces of the Spirit.

THOU God of all grace, visit our souls with those graces of thy spirit which will create a heaven within us upon earth, and make us meet for the heaven which thou hast prepared for us in glory. We ask thy Spirit that we may enjoy the grace of prayer, we want it that we may enjoy the grace of humility, and that we may subdue all our vile and evil tempers. We
