Literary Notices.

HOME INFLUENCE. BY GRACE AGUILAR. 2 vols. This is a clever and interesting tale, written with considerable dramatic power. Several of the characters have the individuality and truthfulness, which bring them before the mind as real persons, rather than as the mere puppets of a tale, though that of Ellen struck us as overdrawn, and, therefore, diminishing the illusion of reality. It corresponds well to its name, illustrating the silent, constant influence of a wise and affectionate parent, over characters the most diverse. In this view, it is an interesting volume for Mothers. The Authoress is a Jewess; but she has wished to lay aside all religious prejudice, and write a moral work applicable to those of every creed. We must say, she has manifested the greatest candour and liberality in the execution of her task: we hail this softening of Jewish prejudice in conjunction with an awakening of the Gentile to a right feeling towards God's ancient people, as the feeble dawn of that blessed day, when Jew and Gentile shall both be one but we will not suppress the Scripture word, both one in Christ Jesus. The more talent and candour and liberality we find evinced by our Jewish brethren and sisters, the more earnestly would we press on them AUGUST, 1847.

the invitation, "Come with us, and we will do thee good."

The task Miss Aguilar imposed on herself was one impossible to be fulfilled. She has presented us with a ripe cluster of grapes, but she has hidden from us Christ the true Vine, by whose sap they are nourished. We trace the stream with pleasure, but we want to see the fountain from whence it flows. May He, who has bestowed such natural gifts on this daughter of Israel, make her a branch of the True Vine, that the fruit which she bears may be to everlasting life.

Two books are on our list for this month, whose honoured authors have lately entered into their rest. THE RETROSPECT, BY A MINISTER IN THE ESTABLISHED CHURCH, FORMERLY A LIEUTENANT IN THE NAVY (Nisbet), and DERRY, by our beloved friend, CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH (Nisbet). The first of these works has reached a twenty-first edition, the second a tenth edition. They need, therefore, no recommendation to public favour. Those of our readers who have not seen 'The Retrospect,' have still before them the pleasure of many a stirring tale of sea life, many a recital of God's wonder-working providence. The picture of the state of the British navy, during the late war, is most affecting; and may, indeed, call forth our liveliest gratitude to Him, who dealt not with our nation according to its sins, nor rewarded it according to its iniquities, but in wonderful forbearance led on to victory, even those who were blaspheming his holy name. The work is a loud plea for such societies as the Naval and Military Bible Society.

The re-publication of DERRY at the present time is very seasonable. We could have longed, at this hour, for some of Charlotte Elizabeth's earnest appeals to the.
