APPENDIX.

(A.)

THE Chaplains of Newgate, Horsemonger Lane, the Penitentiary Millbank, the Parkhurst Prison Isle of Wight, and of the gaols of Ilchester and Worcester, inform me that few have been previously confirmed. I have to express my best thanks to the chaplains who have so kindly favoured me with information. The number of prisoners does not always give the whole number in the gaol, but of whom the point was ascertained.

From the above numbers, then, correctly ascertained, it appears that there are 2852 inmates of 31 prisons and penitentiaries, of whom two thousand and thirty-six have not been confirmed!

I make no comment on this very remarkable fact; nor do I say how valuable this statement must be to the advocates of church extension and of religious education. The state of the females should be particularly observed.

(B.)

1. That it is the duty of every child to pray for the heathen, and to do all they can for them.

2. That a fund, to be called the Norwood Poor-Law School Fund, be formed for the purchase of coloured leather, string, packing and knitting needles, silk in skeins, pasteboard, worsted for knitting, patchwork, and such other things as may be necessary to make articles for sale; also that fruit trees, flowers, roots, seeds, &c., be planted or sown, the profits of which shall be devoted to aid in making known the Gospel to the heathen.

Text, No. 9.-Matt. iii. 2.

86 Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."* If an angel were to come from heaven, and speak to you, would you ever forget his words? The words of the text are the words of John the Baptist, a man sent from heaven. Hear his words, and do them.

The Female Servants' Home Society was instituted in 1836. The Western Home is in Nutford Place, Edgeware Road.

Each Home is under the care of a matron; servants pay one shilling every week, or more after four weeks; they have a single bed, fire, candles, and the use of the kitchen. They are admitted by the recommendation of a subscriber, or respectable tradesmen. Servants coming from the country are admitted by a letter of recommendation from the officiating minister of the place whence they come. They are expected to be at family prayers, morning and evening; and to use every means to procure a situation. On the Lord's day to attend Divine service twice. Since the establishment of the Society, more than 1200 servants have been admitted to the comforts of the Homes. There ought to be twenty in or near the Metropolis. mation will be cheerfully given by the Committees, the Rev. J. Brown; the Secretary, the Rev. W. S. Rowe, if addressed at the Home; or by any member of the Committee."
