Pool and Guildsfield, belong to Christ Church College, Oxford, ex Dono Henry the Eighth, fometime in Leafe to Sir Thomas Palmer, and now to the Earl of Powis. They once belonged to the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell, near Pool. About 1664, there were Ruins of two other Churches to be seen.* In the Valor of 1291, it is divided into Portio Rectories 12 Marc, Portio Madoc ab Llhywelyn 1 Marc, Portio Heylin 2 Marc, and Vicarii ejufdem 8 Marc.

Being an Abbreviation of the Norman Mount Hault or de Monte Alto, the Caftle formerly of the Barons of Mont-Hault.

This Church is dedicated to St. Mary, Sept. 8.

The Impropriators of the Tithes were the Duke of Bridgewater and Robert Davies, Efq. of Gwyfaney, paying a Penfion of five Pounds a Year to the Bishop. It formerly belonged to Bisham Abbey.— Vide Willis' Paroch. Anglican. In this Parish are two Chapels, Tryddyn and Nerquis. The Bishop appoints to the former and the Vicar to the latter. There was formerly a Chapel called Kappel y Spon; a fmall Part of the Wall was ftanding in 1698-9.

This Church is dedicated to St. Mary, Sept. 8.

It is derived (as Edward Lhwyd of the Museum fuppofed in his MS. Travels through Wales in 1698-9) from the Welsh Word Nant, fignifying a Dingle, there being one from the Mill to the Cwm in this Parish, formerly called Nan-nerch.
