The immediate execution of this plan became neceffary, because the exceffive heat had already begun to fhew its influence upon my fervants, two or three of whom were laid up with violent fevers. I therefore took leave of the Rajah on the evening of the 2d, and next morning began my march towards Futty. ghur; which was accomplished without any occurrence that merits to be recorded.

APPENDIX.

ENUMERATION of PLANTS noticed in the
preceding Tour, between Hurdwear and
Sirinagur, in the months of April and
May 1796.

MONANDRIA MONOGYNIA.

Border five-parted, divifions ovate, fhorter than the tube, fpreading. Branches angular, ftraggling. Found on the fide of a water-courfe between the mountains at Adwaanee; grows to a large bush, flowers yellow, and very fweet.

Jufticia Thyrfformis.---Leaves oppofite, petioled; elliptico-lanceolate, entire. The flowers are produced on thyrfe-like terminal spikes, intermixed with nu merous oblong bracts, ringent, and of a dull orange colour. It comes nearest to Jufticia Coccinea of Dr. SMITH, in 2d Faf. No. 8. The trivial name is added on the opinion of Dr. ROXBURCH. It grows to a large bufh on the fides of the Koa-nullah, near Amfour. Salvia integrifolia.---Leaves oppofite, feffile, fub-ovate, entire, woolly, mostly from the lower part of the ftem. Flowers in whorls; of a light blue, about fix in each whorl. Calyx two-lipped, the upper lip three toothed, the lower two toothed, and twice longer; the mouth much enlarged. Grows among ftones, with a strong fibrous root, difficult to withdraw. TRIANDRIA

TRIANDRIA MONOGYNIA.

Valeriana.---Leaves various, thofe of the root hearted, obtufe, entire: petioles femi-cylindrical, long, downy, fen leaves fefile, more pointed, fometimes lightly lobed at the bafe. Flowers triandrous, of a pale pink and white, in compound terminal umbells. Seeds crowned with a twelve-rayed pappus. Root fleshy, fending forth many long flender fibres, foon after taken out of the earth becomes highly fcented, which it retains as long as in a vegetating fate. It is found in feveral parts of the mountains, affects moift and fhaded ficuations, is herbaceous, grows to about eighteen inches high, very flender.

It feems to differ only in the root from the Fatamanfi of Dr. RoxBURGH, to which thefe have no refemblance.

TETRANDRIA MONOGYNIA.

Ixora tomentoja of Dr. ROXBURGH.Found in the neighbourhood of Ghinouly, near the Koa-nullah, acquires the fize of a pretty large tree, though of deformed growth, now in flower. Flowers white, numerous.

PENTANDRIA MONOGYNIA.

Androface rotundifolia.-A beautiful little herbaceous plant, found in great abundance on the molt elevated ridges of mountains, one day's journey S. W. of Sirinagar, Leaves radical, petioled, fubrotund, irregularly aunted. Petioles very long, vilicus. Flowers about the fize of a cowflip, in umbells, a pretty mixture of white and red, with tints of yellow. involucre many leaved, the leaves toothed. Perianths unequal, in fome flowers larger than the corol, many fcattered hairs mixed with the flowers. Lonicera quinquelocularis. A pretty large buh, with long flender branches. Leaves oppofte, petioled, ovate pointed, fometimes elliptical, entire. Flowers axillary, on thort folitary peduncles, each peduncle railing two feffile florets. At the bafe of the florets, a one-leaved bract, or rather, I think, common calyx, two parted, divifions ovate, concave, coloured. Proper perianth above, finall, five toothed, coloured, withering. Corol one petalled, tubular. Border two parted, or two lipped; upper lip oblong, obtufe, entire, reflected; lower more than twice broader; four toothed, Pericarp, in an half ripe ftate, appears to be a capfule five celled, with about five fmall ovate red feeds in each cell. Dr. ROXBURGH confiders the characters of Lonicera and Hamellia united in this plant, but thinks the irregular corol will fix it as a fpecimen of the former, and to the fecond fection thereof, and comes

Adwaanee.

Verbaftum Thapfs. In the valley near Dofah, a robuft plant, from four to five feet high, and, from the profufion of its yellow flowers, very fhowy. The natives have a fuperftitious notion of the efficacy of this plant, in protecting them from the vifitation of evil fpirits. It is Datura Stramonium.-In every part of the known by the name Aabul-ber, or ver. mountains where villages are found. The motives are well acquainted with its narcotic powers, and infufe the feeds to increase the intoxicating powers of their common fpiritous liquors. The capfules they ufe as a fuppurative. Datura is alfo the name of this plant in most parts of Hinduflân; and probably has been carried from the eaft to the weftein world.

Ebretia Tinifolia.--Found both above and below the gauts; grows to a pretty large tree, now in flower; ripens its fruit about the end of May. The berry is about the fize of a pepper-corn, one celled, four feeded, of an orange yellow, infipidly fweet. The natives pickle the unripe berries in vinegar, and cat them with their common food. Ventilago. Leaves alternate, petioled, two

faced, oblong, ovate, acuminated, flightly ferrated; ferratures wide, unequal: petioles very fhort, cylindrical, downy. Panicks terminal, peduncles downy. This plant climbs over other trees with a strong contorted fem. The natives of the mountains apply the bark in a green flate to many ufeful purpofes, as Gelarus Scandens 1.-In most of the forefis cordage. about Hurdwar, and valleys above the

gants. Celarus 2.-Leaves alternate, petioled, fubrotund, acuminated, ferrulate, fmooth. Branches flender, cylindrical, fpotted. Flowers in terminal dichotomous panicles, very fmail, pale green. Grows to a small tree, in the valley about Dofah and Ghinouly., Cedrela.-The tree commonly called Toon, defcribed by Sir W. JONES, in the Afatic Refearches, vol. iv. p. 281, is found in the forefts bordering the mountains below the gauts. Grows to a tall tree, but feldon of confiderable thicknefs. Is more in efteen for household farniture by Europeans, than for any ufe the natives put it to; bears refemblance to mahogany, but of much coarfer fibre. Doubtful gonus coming neareft to Hirtel

la.-

La-A fmall tree on the verge of a rivulet a few miles S. W. of Sirinagur, near the road. Leaves diffufe, petioled, ovate, entire, fmooth. Petioles long, cylindrical, highly coloured, of a dark thining red, the nerves and veins of the leaves, young branches and leaves, coloured in the fame manner. Flowers very fmall, produced on terminal compounds diffufe panicles. Peduncles long, very flender, filiform, hairy, flained. Calyx beneath, five cleft, divifions equal, ovate, pointed. Corol, five petals, equal, ovate, obtufe, filaments five, very fhort. Germ, reniform, compreffed. Style from the depreffed margin of the germ, very fhort. Stigma timple, a little depreffed. Pericarp, refembles a legume, about the fize of the feed of Ervum-lens, reniform, containing one feed of the fante fhape, attached to the future of the valve. Vitis.-Leaves agree pretty well with the defcription of v. Indica, except that in this plant they are extremely hoary on both fides, white beneath, brown above, five nerved. The petioles, peduncles, and cirri, are alfo very hoary. Grows in dry fituations in the forefts about Dofah and Belkate, row in flower. Gurdenia Ulginfa 1. ROXBURGH.-Grows to a large tree in the forefts, on the borders of the mountain between Hurdwar and Coadwara. The flowers hexandrous, very large, coreaceous, of a cream white. It is found alfo in the lower parts of Rohitund, near Futtyghur; flowers in the month of June. Gardenia 2.- A Imall tree in the vicinity af Hurdwar, thorny, branches oppofite and thorny, thorns oppofite, diverging, rigid, ftraight, one terminating the branch, an inch or more in length. Leaves obovate, attenuated at the bafe, half fefiile, bundled, three or more entire. Flowers moitly hexandrous; of a yellowish white mixed with green, fcattered about the extremities of the branches, feflile: during inflorefcence, few leaves on the tree, and thofe of the preceding year, ripe fruit remaining, about the bignefs of a middle fized orange, orbicular; refemblys more a drupe than berry. Seeds numerous, neftling in a foftih pulp, contained in a hard five or fix valved hell, and this enveloped in a spongy flefly pulp, half an inch thick, of a greenish white within, externally of a brownish ath, and smooth.

Gardenia 3.A plant of humble growth, fhrubby, none feen exceeding two feet in height, growing among fragments of

rocks on the elevated ridge near Chi chooa. Leaves termiuating the branches, without order, rather crowded, petiol ed, mostly obovate, entire, smooth, cre inch by half an inch, petiole very thert. Flowers axillary, fingle, on folitary there peduncles, of a greenith white colour, and very fweet to the fmell. Perianth above, cne leaved, half five cleft divi fions awled, erect, permanent. Carcl funel form, tube long, widening upwards, partly clofed about the middle by a ring of filky down. Border five parted, divifions ovate, equal. Filaments fhort, within the tube. Another oblong, partly within the tube. Germ globular. Style length of the tube. Stigma two lobed, lobes ovate, flatter ed, oppreffed. Pericarp, a berry crowned with the calyx, about the fize of a common pea, one celled, four feeded. Nerium reticulata, 1.---A ftrong climber, about the trees near Amfour. Nerium, 2.---With leaves oppofite, petiol ed, ovate, pointed entire, downy; petioles very fhort, gibbous; follicles two, long, a little compreffed, breadth of the forefinger. The flowers terminate the branches on four or five fhort divided peduncles, about the fize of a prim rofe, of a greenish white, very wet fcented. It is found in plenty in th fo refts at the foot of the gaut. Beth flower and fruit now on the tree. The nectary in this fpecies differs from the generic defcription; it is here compofed of twelve yellow tridentated feales about half the length of the ftamens, neither are the anthers terminated by threads, but rigid at the apices. I have called it a Nerium in deference to the judgment of a better botanist, but it will bear a comparison with the next genus Echites, I think. Echites Antidsfentricum, ROXBURGE-A fmall tree in the forefts about Hurdwar. Leaves oppofite, half or fub-peticke, ovate, oblong, pointed, entire, waved, fmooth, fhining, one nerved, with many pairs of lateral parallel ribs. The Li nean characters of the fructification do not ftrictly agree with this plant. The nectary is here wanting. Anthers al most at the bottom of the tube, filments fcarcely any. The follicles agree with thofe of Nerium Antidyfentricum. The feeds are in great repute among the natives of Hinduftân as a vermifuge. Genus not determined.---A fmall tree, of rather large bufh, growing by the road fide near Teykaka Maanda. Leaves about the tops of the branches, irreg larly oppofite, petioled, ovate, various

ly pointed, ferrated, fmooth, one nerved; petioles fhort. Flowers panicled about the ends of the branches; yellowjfh, with many brown veins, more coloured above. Calyx five cleft, expanding, the divifions lightly lacerated at the edges, rounded, coloured. Corol

Filaments five, fhorter than the corol, enlarged below, and refembling the germ, lightly coalefcing at the bafe into a ring. Anthers oblong, erect. Germ above, orbicular, fmooth, the fize of the giandulous bafe of the ftamens in the centre of them. Style the length of the stamens, filiform; ftigma fimple, truncated. Pericarp not feen.

PENTANDRIA DIGYNIA.

Apocynum. Aftrong climbing bush, fpreading itself with much profufion over the underwood of forefts between Dofah and Sirinagur. The flowers numerous, pure white, and highly fcented, fize of a primrofe, branches cylin-. drical, oppofite, leaves in the fame order, petioled, lance-ovate, entire, fmooth; petioles fhort. Calyx five parted, small, lanced, downy. Corol one petaled, wheeled, tube length of the calvx. Border five cleft; fegments equal, rounding, fpreading. Nectary five glandulous bodies furrounding the germ; filaments five, fhort, compreffed, internally downy; anthers rigid, oblong, pointed, converging, cleft at the bafe. Germs two. Style length of the stamens; ftigma oval, compreffed, two lobed, attenuated. Pericarp, follicles two, oblong, bellied, pointed, fmooth, one celled, one valved, feeds numerous, imbricated, compreffed, crowned with long filky pappus. It bears fome affinity to the genus Eches. It is found in feveral parts of Rohilcund and the Duab.

Herniaria, doubtful.-A fhrubby bush with numerous flender ftems and branches, and covered with a profufion of minute yellow flowers. Leaves alternate, petioled, ovate, rather elliptical, entire, fmooth, petioles fhort. Calyx five parted, divifions unequal, erect, coloured. Corol none. Nectary, five minute glandulous three toothed fcales, furrounding the foot of the ftyles. Filaments five, caffilary longer than the calyx, erect, inferted into the bafe of the calyx. Anthers fimple, erect. Styles two, filiform. Stigmas fimple, recurvated. Germ too minute for infpection in its prefent ftate; and as the pericarp is not yet feen, füture obfervation muit determine the genus, yet doubtful. Many bushes of it grew in the foreft about Coadwara. It was obferved in the middle of May; therefore we may conclude the month of June would be a fitter time for the examination.

Afclepias, doubtful.-A fhrubby climber now coming into flower; branches cylindrical, fmooth, oppofite. Leaves oppofite, heart ovate, much wounded beneath, pointed above, petioled. Flowers in axillary nodding cymes, of a pale green. Calyx five cleft, fmall, villous, divifions ovate, equal, fpreading. Corol flat. Border five cleft; fegments broad, obtufely ovate, Nectary, five glandular corpufcles, into which the anthers are inferted without filaments. Germs two. Styles none. Pericarp not feen, therefore its place in the fyftem yet doubtful. Found near the gaut of Coadwara,

Linum Trigynum, ROXBURGH. A plant -
well known in our gardens at Cawnpore
and Lucknow by the name Gul-afburfee,
is a native of the high mountains be-
tween Nataana and Adwaanee. It is
perennial, fhrubby, grows to a fpread-
ing bufh about four feet high, ftem and
branches erect, flender, biped. It makes
a handsome appearance with its nume-
rous yellow flowers in March and
April; would doubtlefs, by fome care,
thrive in the climate of Britain.

Berberis Ilicifolia.-Grows in plenty in the
valley through which the Koa nullah

has its courfe, now full in flower, and
green fruit. The fruit, when ripe, is
black, and eaten by the natives. The
wood is of a deep yellow, and used in
dyeing; but, under the management of
the natives, the colour is not permanent.

Larrus Cafic.-Grows to the fize of a fmall tree, on the fides of the mountains rear the roads to the northward of Belkate. In addition to the Linnean generic characters noticed, petals hairy; anthers the length of the filaments, flightly comprefled, four celled, four valved, or with four lids, which on the exclufion of the pollen fly up, and leave the cells very diftinct.

DECANDRIA MONOGYNIA.

Barbinia Scandens.-Growing on the skirts
of the foreft along the Ganges near
Hurdwar, fpreading itfelf moft pro-
fufely over the heads of every other
tree; and mofily concealing with its
broad leaves the foliage and branches
of the trees on which it climbs. The
flowers are a mixture of white and
cream colour, produced on fimple ter-
minal racemes. Stamens unequal, three
only fertile. Legume large, compref-
fed. Found alfo on the mountains
· above the gauts.

Style threadform, the length of the calyx, hairy, partly coloured. Stigma headed, deprefied, five cornered. Pericarp drupe, dry, orbicular, with diftant rounded angles, depreffed. Seed, nuts five, fize of a fmall pepper-corn, roundish, hard, furrowed, each containing one feed ef the fame form. It comes nearest to Quifqualis, and if it cannot be admitted there, will probably form a new genus. Doubtful---Growing in forefts of cak on the high ridge of mountains near Adwaanee, a large tree juft now confpi cuous for its abundant diff lay of large crimfon flowers, leaves without crder about the upper part of the branches, petioled, lance-oblong, entire, fmceth above, hoary, white beneath. It approaches neareft to Rhododendron, but will probably not be admiflible there, and perhaps will form a new genus. The natives called it Boorans; the wood is ufed for making the ftocks of matchlocks. Arbutus, Coubtful.---A tree of medium fize found in forefts of fir, oak, &c. between Natuona and Adwaanee. Crowded recemes of white monopetalous flowers, terminal and drooping. Leaves alternate, petioled, ovate, pointed, entire. Calyx half five cleft, fmall, divifions ovate, erect.
