13 IT And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appearelh to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and (lee into Egypt, and be thou there until 1 bring thee word: lor Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14 When he arose, he took the younj child and his mother by night, anc departed into Egypt;

CHAP. 111.

IN those days came John the Baptist, preaching hi the wilderness of Ju dea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

5 TT Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region roun J about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 IT But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

9 And think not to say within yourelves, We have Abraham to our father: for 1 aay unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11 I indeed baptize 3'ou with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he ihall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

17 And, lo, a voice from heavci saying, This is my beloved Son, i whom I am well pleased.


THEN was Jesus led up of the j Spirit into the wilderness, to be) tempted of die devil.

3 And when the tempter i him, he said, If thou be the Son of] God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread tilone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into1 the holy city, aud setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be th< Son of God, cast thyself down : for i is written, He shall give his angel: charge concerning thee ; and in tktv hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shaltnot tempt the Lord ttiy God.

S Again, the devil taketh htm up into an exceeding high mountain, and 8howeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will 1 give thee, if thou wilt| fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get \hee hence, Satan; for it is written.

and Mi?nstry of Jesus. Thou shall worship the Lord thy God» and him only ehalt thou serve.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

- IT Now, when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea-coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephtlialim;

14 That it might be fulfilled which fas spoken by Esaias the prophet,


15 The land of Zabulon, and the. land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them

rhich sat in the region and rhadow of death, light is spmngup.

17 If From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

1S~TT And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were lishers.

19 And he saith unto them, Follow ne, and I will make you fishers of

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with clivers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee,

2 And he opened his routu, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are Uie meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed arc the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for rignteousnesa' sake: for theirs is the k ingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad; for.great is your reward in heav for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13 IT Ye are the salt of the earth: but If Uie salt have lost his savour, where with shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot ofl men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that i3 set on a hillcannot'be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and nut it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the hoi _

lb" Let your light so shine before men, that they may sec your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven..

17 TT Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I an not'come to destroy, but to fulfil.

13 For vf rily I say unto vou, Til heaven and earth pass, one jot or out little shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.


19 Whosoever therefore shall break me of these least commandments, and

shall teach men so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the

laeoumcss of Uie scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter in to Lite kingdom of heaven.

21 1T Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whoso vcr is angry with his brother without

a cause, shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of he council; but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell Ike.

23 Therefore, if the- bring thy gift to the altar, and there renieinberest that thy brother hath aught against thee,

24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be recou ciled to thy brother, and then come

and offer thy gift.

25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art in the way will) him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou b« cast into prison.

26 Verily 1 say unto thee/Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27 IT Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28 Butl say unto you, That whosoever lookcth on a woman to lust al ter her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

20 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: I'or it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee : for it is profitable lor thee that one of thy members should perish, and not t/iat thy whole body should bu cast into hell.

Love to enemies. CHAP. VI. Attention to cne motives.

31 [t hath been said. Whosoever shall j 48 Be ye therefore perfect,eveu as put away his wile, let him give her a ;your Father which is in heaven is writing of divorcement: perfect.

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving] for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced coinmitteth adultery.

33 IT Again, ye have heard that it nath beeu said by them of old time, Thou ahalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the JLord thine! oaths:

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his j footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King:

36 Neither shalt thou swear b3' thy lead; because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be Vea, yea; Nay,nay: for whatsoever is more than tiiese cometh of evil.

38 IT Ve have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil; but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee co go a mile, go with him twain.

42 Give to him that asketh thee ?and from him that would borrow thee turn not thou away.

43 IT Ve have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy:

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of I your father which is in heaven: for] he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth the just and on the unjust

46 For if ye love them which love! you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? tio not even the publicans so?


TAKE heed that ye do not 3'onr alms before men, to be seen of thorn; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2 Therefore, when thou doest thin* alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may liave glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms,"let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth;

4 That thine abns may be in secret and thy Father, which seetli in secret, himself shall reward thee openly.

TT And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the comers of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, entCi into thy closet; and when thou hast shut tiiy door, pray to thy Father which is ill secret; and thy Father, which 6eeih in secret, shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

5 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father kuoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven; '[allowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be lone in earth, as ic is in heaven.

H Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evd: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, ibr ever. Amen.

14 TT For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15- But if ye forgive not jnen their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

10 IT Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a end countc nance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appeal- unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;

18 That thou appear not uuto m fast, but unto thy Father which secret: and thy Father, which seclh in secret, shall reward thee openly

19 ir Lay not up for yourselves tre ures upon earth, where moth and rusll doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust dotti corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 TT The light of the body is the eve: if therefore thhie eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee I be darkness, how great is thai darkness!

2-1 It No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the oilier. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

2o Therefore 1 say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shali eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better-than they?

27 Which of you, by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field,] how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is east into the oven, shall\ ke not much more doike you, 0 ye of little fairh?

31 Therefore take no thought, say

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek :) for your heavenly Father knowelh that ye have need of all these tilings.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

3-1 Take therefore no thought for the morrow.- for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day w Uie evd thereof. CHAP. VII.

JUDGE not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and witli what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you a^ain.

3 Ai>d why beholuest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but con siderest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Ur how wilt thou say to thy brother. Let me pull oul the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in

6 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and Uk'ii shall thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

G IT Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

7 IT Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one thataskclh, received): and he that seeketh, lindeth: and to him that knocketh, it 6hall be opened.
