God's message to the Ifraelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours. 4 The death of the firstborn threatened. And the LORD turned a mighty ftrong weft wind, which took away the locufts, and caft them into the Red fea; there remained not one locuft in all the coafts of Egypt. 2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of filver, and jewels of gold. 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the fight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Mofes was very great in the land of Egypt, in the fight of Pharaoh's fervants, and in the fight of the people. 4 ¶ And Mofes faid, Thus faith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: 5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt fhall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that fitteth upon his throne, even unto the firftborn of the maidfervant that is behind the mill; and all the first 20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, fo that he would not let the chil-born of beasts. dren of Ifrael go. 6 And there fhall be a great cry 21 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Stretch throughout all the land of Egypt, fuch out thine hand toward heaven, that there as there was none like it, nor fhall be may be darkness over the land of Egypt, like it any more. even darkness which may be felt. 22 And Mofes ftretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darknefs in all the land of Egypt three days: 23 They faw not one another, neither rofe any from his place for three days: but all the children of Ifrael had light in their dwellings. 24 And Pharaoh called unto Mofes, and faid, Go ye, ferve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones alfo go with you. 25 And Mofes faid, Thou must give us alfo facrifices and burnt offerings, that we may facrifice unto the LORD our God. 26 Our cattle alfo fhall go with us; there fhall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof muft we take to ferve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we muft ferve the LORD, until we come thither. 27 ¶ But the LOD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. 28 And Pharaoh faid unto him, Get 7 But against any of the children of Ifrael fhall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Ifrael. 8 And all thefe thy fervants fhall come down unto me, and bow down themfelves unto me, faying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger. 9 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Pharaoh fhall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt. IO And Mofes and Aaron did all thefe wonders before Pharaoh : and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, fo that he would not let the children of Ifrael go out of his land. CHAP. XII. I The paffover inflituted. 29 The firborn are flain. 31 The Ifraelites are driven out of the land. How the passover is to be kept. 2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it ball be the first month of the year to you. 31 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Ifrael, faying,. In the tenth day of this month they fhall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there fhall be an holy convocation to you i no manner of work fhall be done in them, fave that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. 17 And ye fhall obferve the feast of unleavened bread; for in this feifsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye obferve this day in your generations by an ordi 4 And if the houshold be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his houfe take it according to the number of the fouls; every man áccord-nance for ever. ing to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb fhall Be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye fhall take it out from the fheep, or from the goats: 6 And ye fhall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the fame month: and the whole affembly of the congregation of Ifrael fhall kill it in the evening. And they fhall take of the blood, and ftrike it on the two fide pofts and on the upper door poft of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 8 And they fhall eat the flesh in that night, roaft with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they fhall eat it. 9 Eat not of it raw, nor fodden at all with water, but roaft with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. to And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which temaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. II And thus fhall ye eat it; with your foins girded, your fhoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye fhall eat it in hafte: it is the LORD's paffover. 12 For I will pafs through the land of Egypt this night, and will fmite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beaft; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houfes where ye are: and when I fee the blood, I will pafs over you, and the plague fhall not be upon you to deftroy you, when I fmite the land of Egypt. 18 In the firft month, on the fourteenthi day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 19 Seven days fhall there be no leaven found in your houfes: for whofoever eateth that which is leavened, even that foul fhall be cut off from the congregationi of Ifrael, whether he be a ftranger, or born in the land. 20 Ye fhall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations fhall ye eat unleavened bread. 21 Then Mofes called for all the elders of Ifrael, and faid unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the paffover. 22 And ye fhall take a bunch of hyffop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bafon, and ftrike the lintel and the two fide pofts with the blood that is in the bason ; and none of you thall go out at the door of his houfe until the morning. 23 For the LORD will pafs through to fmite the Egyptians; and when he feeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two fide pofts, the LORD will pafs over the door, and will not fuffer the deftroyer to come in unto your houses to fmite you. 24 And ye hall obferve this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy fons for ever. 25 And it fhall come to pafs, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye fhall keep this fervice. 26 And it fhall come to pafs, when your children fhall fay unto you, What mean ye by this fervice? 27 That ye fhall fay, It is the facrifice of the LORD's paffover, who passed over 14 And this day fhall be unto you for the houfes of the children of Ifrael in a memorial; and ye fhall keep it a feaft Egypt, when he fmote the Egyptians, to the LORD throughout your genera- and delivered our houfes. And they spoiled the Egyptians. 37 And the children of Ifrael journeyed from Ramefes to Succoth, about fix hundred thousand on foot that were men, befide children. 38 And a mixed multitude went up allo with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thruft out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual. 40 Now the fojourning of the children of Ifrael, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And it came to pafs at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the felfsame day it came to pass, that all the hofts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It is a night to be much obferved unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Ifrael in their generations. CHAP. XIII. 1 The firborn fanctified to God. 3 The memorial of the paffover is commanded. 21 God guideth them by a pillar of a cloud and of fire. A ND the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying, 2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Ifrael, both of man and of beaft: it is mine. 3 ¶ And Mofes faid unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by ftrength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there fhall no leavened bread be eaten. 4 This day came ye out in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebufites, which he fware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou fhalt keep this fervice in this month. 6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the feventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread fhall be eaten fe ven days; and there fhall no leavened 43 And the LORD faid unto Mofes and bread be feen with thee, neither fhall Aaron, This is the ordinance of the paff-there be leaven feen with thee in all thy over: There shall no stranger eat thereof: quarters. 44 But every man's fervant that is 8 And thou shalt fhew thy fon in that day, The Ifraelites guided by a pillar of fire. And they did fo. 5 T And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his fervants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Ifrael go from ferving us? 6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him: 7 And he took fix hundred chofen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. and 8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he purfued after the children of Ifrael the children of Ifrael went out with an high hand. 9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horfes and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horfemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the fea, befide Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon. 10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Ifrael lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were fore afraid and the children of Ifrael cried out unto the LORD. 11 And they said unto Mofes, Because there were no graves in Egypt, haft thou taken us away to die in the wildernefs? wherefore haft thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, faying, Let us alone, that we may ferve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to ferve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. 13 And Mofes faid unto the people;| Fear ye not, ftand ftill, and fee the falvation of the LORD, which he will fhew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have feen to day, ye shall fee them again no more for ever. 14 The LORD fhall fight for you, and ye fhall hold your peace. 15 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Wherefore crieft thou unto me? fpeak unto the children of Ifrael, that they go forward: 16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the fea, and divide it; and the children of Ifrael fhall go on dry ground through the midst of the fea. 17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they fhall follow them and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his hoft, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians fhall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Ifrael, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Ifrael; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to thefe: fo that the one came not near the other all the night. 21 And Mofes ftretched out his hand over the fea; and the LORD caufed the fea to go back by a ftrong eaft wind all that night, and made the fea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Ifrael went into the midft of the fea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midft of the fea, even all Pharaoh's horfes, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And it came to pafs, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the hoft of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the hoft of the Egyptians, 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: fo that the Egyptians faid, Let us flee from the face of Ifrael; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. 26 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Stretch out thine hand over the fea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horfernen. The fong of Mofes. 27 And Mofes ftretched forth his hand over the fea, and the fea returned to his ftrength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the fea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the hoft of Pharaoh that came into the fea after them; there remained not fo much as one of them. 29 But the children of Ifrael walked upon dry land in the midst of the fea; and the waters quere a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. 30 Thus the LORD faved Ifrael that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Ifrael faw the Egyptians dead upon the fea fhore. 31 And Ifrael faw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his fervant Mofes. CHAP. XV. I Mofes' fong. 22 The people want water. 23 The bitter waters at Marah, 25 are Sweetened. 27 They come to Elim. TH HEN fang Mofes and the children of Ifrael this fong unto the LORD, and fpake, faying, I will fing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horfe and his rider hath he thrown into the fea. 2 The LORD is my ftrength and fong, and he is become my falvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. 4 Pharaoh's chariots and his hoft hath he caft into the fea: his chofen captains alfo are drowned in the Red fea. 5 The depths have covered them: they fank into the bottom as a ftone. 6 Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dafhed in pieces the enemy. 7 And in the greatnefs of thine excellency thou haft overthrown them that rofe up against thee: thou fentet forth thy wrath, which confumed them as ftubble. And with the blaft of thy noftrils the waters were gathered together, the floods itood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the fea. |
