CHAP. L. The mourning for Jacob. 7 The funeral. 24 Jofeph prophefieth to his brethren of their return. 26 His death. and funeral of Facob. 8 And all the house of Jofeph, and his brethren, and his father's houfe: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Gothen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. To And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very fore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father feven days. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they faid, This is grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. 12 And his fons did unto him according as he commanded them: 13 For his fons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a poffeffion of a burying place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. 14 And Jofeph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. 15 And when Jofeph's brethren faw that their father was dead, they said, Jofeph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. 16 And they fent a meffenger unto Jo AND Jofeph fell upon his father's feph, faying, Thy father did command face, and wept upon him, and kiffed him. 2 And Jofeph commanded his fervants the phyficians to embalm his father: and the phyficians embalmed Ifrael. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for fo are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threefcore and ten days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were paft, Jofeph fpake unto the houfe of Pharaoh, faying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, faying, 5 My father made me wear, faying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there Thalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. before he died, faying, 17 Sofhall ye fay unto Jofeph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trefpafs of thy brethren, and their fin; for they did unto thee evil and now, we pray thee, forgive the trefpafs of the fervants of the God of thy father. And Jofeph wept when they fpake unto him. 18 And his brethren alfo went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy fervants. 19 And Jofeph faid unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pafs, as it is this day, to fave much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And fhe called his name Mofes and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Ifaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Ifrael, and God had refpect unto them. CHAP. III. Mofes keepeth Jethro's flock. 2 God appeareth unto him in a burning bulb. 9 He fendeth him to deliver Ifrael. 11 And it came to pafs in thofe days, NOW Mofes kept the flock of Jethro when Mofes was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he fpied an Egyptian fmiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he faw that there was no man, he flew the Egyptian, and hid him in the fand. 13 And when he went out the fecond day, behold, two men of the Hebrews ftrove together: and he faid unto him that did the wrong, Wherefore finiteft thou thy fellow? 14 And he faid, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendeft thou to kill me, as thou killedft the Egyptian? And Mofes feared, and faid, Surely this thing is known. 151 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he fought to flay Mofes. But Mofes fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he fat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17 And the shepherds came and drove them away but Mofes ftood up and helped them, and watered their flock. 18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come fo foon to day? his father in law, the prieft of Midian: and he led the flock to the backfide of the defert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midft of a bufh: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bufh was not confumed. 3 And Mofes faid, I will now turn afide, and fee this great fight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD faw that he turned afide to fee, God called unto him out of the midft of the bush, and faid, Mofes, Mofes. And he faid, Here am I. 5 And he faid, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy fhoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he faid, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob. And Mofes hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD faid, I have furely feen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reafon of their talkmasters; for I know their forrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flow19 And they faid, An Egyptian delivering with milk and honey; unto the place ed us out of the hand of the thepherds, of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and and alfo drew water enough for us, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the watered the flock, Hivites, and the Jebufites. 20 And he faid unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread. 21 And Mofes was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Mofes Zipporah his daughter. 22 And he bare him a fon, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Ifrael is come unto me: and I have alfo feen the oppreffiou wherewith the Egyptians opprefs them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will fend thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayeft bring forth my people the children of Ifracl out of Egypt, D 3 II And Ir And Mofes faid unto God, Whol am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and 1 that I fhould bring forth the children of Ifrael out of Egypt? 12 And he faid, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have fent thee: When thou haft brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye fhall ferve God upon this mountain. 13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Ifrael, and fhall fay unto them, The God of your fathers hath fent me unto you; and they shall fay to me, What is his name: what fhall I fay unto them? 14 And God faid unto Mofes, I AM THAT Í AM: and he faid, Thus fhalt thou fay unto the children of Ifrael, AM hath fent me unto you. 15 And God faid moreover unto Mofes, Thus fhalt thou fay unto the children of Ifrael, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. 16 Go, and gather the elders of Ifrael together, and fay unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Ifaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, faying, I have furely vifited you, and feen that which is done to you in Egypt; 17 And I have faid, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebufites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. 18 And they fhall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Ifrael, unto the king of Egypt, aud ye fhall fay unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wildernets, that we may facrifice to the LORD our God. 19 And I am fure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. 20 And I will stretch out my hand, and fmite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof; and after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favour in the fight of the Egyptians: and it fhall come to pafs, that, when ye go, ye fhall not go empty : 22 But every woman fhall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that fojourneth in her house, jewels of filver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your fons, and upon your daughters; and ye fhall fpoil the Egyptians. AD Mofes anfwered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will fay, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD faid unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Caft it on the ground. And he caft it on the ground, and it be came a ferpent; and Mofes fled from before it. 4 And the LORD said unto Mofes, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. 6 And the LORD faid furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bofom. And he put his hand into his bofom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as fnow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bofom again. And he put his hand into his bofom again; and plucked it out of his bofom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it fhall come to pafs, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the firft fign, that they will believe the voice of the latter fign. 9 And it fhall come to pafs, if they will not believe also these two figns, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou fhalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takeft out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land. 10 And Mofes faid unto the LORD, Q my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor fince thou haft fpoken un to thy fervant; but I am flow of speech, and of a flow tongue. II And the LORD said unto him, Whọ hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the feeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he faid, O my Lord, fend, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt fend. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Mofes, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can fpeak well. And alfo, behold, he God's message to Pharaoh, Chap. v. The Ifraelites' bondage increased. the children of Ifrael, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. CHAP. V. he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he feeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou fhalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye fhall do. 16 And he fhall be thy fpokefman unto the people: and he fhall be, even he thall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him ipftead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do figns. 18 And Mofes went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and faid unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and fee whether they be yet alive. And Jethro faid to Mofes, Go in peace. 19 And the LORD faid unto Mofes in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which fought thy life. 20 And Mofes took his wife and his fons, and fet them upon an afs, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Mofes took the rod of God in his hand. 21 ¶ And the LORD faid unto Mofes, When thou goeft to return into Egypt, fee that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou fhalt fay unto Pharaoh, Thus faith the LORD, Ifrael is my fon, even my firflborn: 23 And I fay unto thee, Let my fon go, that he may ferve me: and if thou refufe to let him go, behold, will flay thy fon, even thy firstborn. 24 And it came to pafs by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and fought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a fharp ftone, and cut off the forefkin of her fon, and caft it at his feet, and faid, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. 26 So he let him go: then the faid, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcifion. 27 And the LORD faid to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Mofes. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him. 28 And Mofes told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had fent him, and all the figns which he had commanded him. 29 And Mofes and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Ifrael: 30 And Aaron fpake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Mofes, and did the figns in the fight of the people. 31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited S He 1 Pharaoh chideth Mofes and Aaron. increafeth the Ifraelites' tafk. 22 Mofes complaineth to God. I know not the LORD, neither will I let Ifrael go. 3 And they faid, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the defert, and facrifice unto the LORD our God; left he fall upon us with peftilence, or with the fword. 4 And the king of Egypt faid unto them, Wherefore do ye, Mofes and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh faid, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them reft from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the fame day the tafkmafters of the people, and their officers, faying, 7 Ye fhall no more give the people ftraw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather ftraw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye fhall lay upon them; ye fhall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, faying, Let us go and facrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words. 10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they fpake to the people, faying, Thus faith Pharaoh, I will not give you ftraw. II Go ye, get you ftraw where ye can find it yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmafters hafted them, faying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was ftraw. 14 And the officers of the children of Ifrael, which Pharaoh's tafkmafters had fet over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore? 15 Then the officers of the children of D.4 Ifrael |
