THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH.

CHAP. I. 15 And when ye fpread forth your I Ifaiah's complaint of Judah. 10 He hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: upbraideth their fervice. 16 He ex- yea, when ye make many prayers, I horteth to repentance, with promises and will not hear: your hands are full of threatenings. blood.

HE of Ifaiah the fon of 16 Wath you, make you clean; put Tamoz, which he law concerning away the evil of your doings from before Judah and Jerufalem in the days of mine eyes; ceafe to do evil; Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the afs his master's crib: but Ifrael doth not know, my people doth not confider.

4 Ah finful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a feed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forfaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Ifrael unto anger, they are gone away backward.

5 Why should ye be ftricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is fick, and the whole heart faint.

6 From the fole of the foot even unto the head there is no foundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying fores: they have not been clofed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

17 Learn to do well; feek judgment, relieve the oppreffed, judge the fatherlefs, plead for the widow.

18 Come now, and let us reason together, faith the LORD: though your fins be as fcarlet, they fhall be as white as fnow; though they be red like crimfon, they fhall be as wool.

19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye fhall eat the good of the land;

20 But if ye refufe and rebel, ye fhall be devoured with the fword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righ teoufnefs lodged in it; but now mur derers.

22 Thy filver is become drofs, thy wine mixed with water:

23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherlefs, neither doth the caufe of the widow come unto

7 Your country is defolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, ftrang-them. ers devour it in your prefence, and it is defolate, as overthrown by ftrangers.

8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a befieged city. 9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we fhould have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

11 To what purpose is the multitude of your facrifices unto me? faith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beafts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

24 Therefore faith the LORD, the LORD of hofts, the mighty One of Ifrael, Ah, will eafe me of mine adverfaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:

25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy drofs, and take away all thy tin:

26 And I will reftore thy judges as at the firft, and thy counfellers as at the beginning: afterward thou fhalt be called, The city of righteoufnefs, the faithful city.

27 Zion fhall be redeemed with judgement, and her converts with righteouf nefs.

28 And the destruction of the tranfgreffors and of the finners shall be together, and they that forfake the LORD fhall be confumed.

29 For they fhall be aflamed of the oaks which ye have defired, and ye shall 13 Bring no more vain oblations; in- be confounded for the gardens that ye cenfe is an abomination unto me; the have chofen. new moons and fabbaths, the calling of 30 For ye fhall, be as an oak whose affemblies, I cannot away with? it is ini-leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath quity, even the folemn meeting.

ISAIAH.

a Ifaiah prophefieth the coming of Chrift's kingdom. 6 Wickedness is the caufe of God's forfaking. to He exhorteth to fear, because of the powerful effects of God's majesty. HE word that Ifaiah the fon of Amoz

Traw concerning Judah and Jerufalem,

2 And it fhall come to pass in the laft days that the mountain of the LORD's houfe fhall be established in the top of the mountains, and fhall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

The confufion that cometh by fin. 17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men fhall be made low: and the LORD alone fhall be exalted in that day.

18 And the idols he fhall utterly abolish. the rocks, and into the caves of sof 19 And they shall go into the holes

earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majefty, when he arifeth to thake terribly the earth.

20 In that day a man fhall caft his idols of filver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, the moles and to the bats;

3 And many people fhall go and fay, Come ye, and let us go up to the mounto tain of the LORD, to the houfe of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion fhall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerufalem.

4 And he shall judge among the nations, and fhall rebuke many people: and they fhall beat their fwords into plowfhares, and their fpears into pruninghooks: nation fhall not lift up fword against nation, neither fhall they learn war any more.

5 O houfe of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

6 Therefore thou haft forfaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the eaft, and are foothfayers like the Philistines, and they pleafe themselves in the children of strangers.

Their land alfo is full of filver and gold, neither is there any end of their treafures; their land is alfo full of horfes, neither is there any end of their chariots: 8 Their land alfo is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:

9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.

10 T Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the duft, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.

II The lofty looks of man fhall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men fhall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

12 For the day of the LORD of hofts hall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he fhall be brought low:

13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up, 15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

16 And upon all the fhips of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he arifeth to fhake terribly the earth.

22 Ceafe ye from man, whofe breath is in his noftrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?

CHAP. III.

1 The great confufion which cometh by fin. 9 The impudence of the people. 12 The oppreffion and covetousness of the rulers. 16 The judgments which fhall be for the pride of the women.

TOR, behold, the LORD, the LORD of

hofts, doth take away from Jerufalem and from Judah the ftay and the ftaff, the whole ftay of bread, and the whole ftay of water,

2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counfeller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent oratur.

4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes fhall rule over them. 5 And the people fhall be oppreffed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child fhall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the bafe againft the honourable.

6 When a man fhall take hold of his

brother of the houfe of his father, faying, Thou haft clothing, he thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:

7 In that day fhall he fwear, faying, I will not be an healer; for in my houfe is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.

8 For Jerufalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

9 T The fhew of their countenance doth witnefs against them; and they declare their fin in Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their foul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

Chap. iv, v.
10 Say ye to the righteous, that it ball
be well with him: for they fhall eat the
fruit of their doings.

11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill
with him for the reward of his hands
fhall be given him.

12 As for my people, children are their oppreffors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee caufe thee to err, and deftroy the way of thy paths.

13 The LORD ftandeth up to plead, and ftandeth to judge the people.

14 The LORD will enter into judgement with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyards; the fpoil of the poor is in your houses.

15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? faith the Lord God of hosts.

16 ¶ Moreover the LORD faith, Becaufe the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

17 Therefore the LORD will fmite with a fcab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their fecret parts.

18 In that day the LORD will take away

the bravery of their tinkling ornaments
about their feet, and their cauls, and their
round tires like the moon,

19 The chains, and the bracelets, and
the mufflers,

20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of
the legs, and the headbands, and the
tablets, and the earrings,

21 The rings, and nofe jewels,
22 The changeable fuits of apparel,
and the mantles, and the wimples, and
the crifping pins,

23 The glaffes, and the fine linen, and
the hoods, and the vails.

2 In that day fhall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Ifrael.

3 And it fhall come to pafs, that he that is left in Zion, and be that remaineth in Jerufalem, fhall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerufalem:

4 When the LORD fhall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and fhall have purged the blood of Jerufalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her affemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the fhining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.

6 And there fhall be a tabernacle for a fhadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from ftorm and from rain.

CHAP. V.

1 Under the type of a vineyard God excufeth his fevere judgment. 8 His judgments upon covetousness, 11 upon lafcivioufnefs, 13 upon impiety, 20 and upon injuftice. 20 The executioners of God's judgments. NOW will I fing to my wellbeloved

a fong of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:

2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the ftones thereof, and planted it with the choiceft vine, and built a tower in the midft of it, and alfo made a wineprefs therein: and he looked that it hould bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes?

3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerufa lem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.

4 What could have been done more 24 And it fhall come to pafs, that in- to my vineyard, that I have not done in stead of sweet fmell there fhall be a ftink; it? wherefore, when I looked that it and inftead of a girdle a rent; and in-fhould bring forth grapes, brought it ftead of well fet hair baldnefs; and in-forth wild grapes? ftead of a ftomacher a girding of fackcloth; and burning inftead of beauty. 25 Thy men fhall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

26 And her gates fhall lament and mourn; and the being defolate fhall fit upon the ground.

CHAP. IV.

In the extremity of evils, Chrift's kingdom
fhall be a fanctuary.

ND in that day feven women fhall

A take hold of one man, faying, We

will eat our own bread, and wear our

5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it fhall be trodden down:

6 And I will lay it wafte: it fhall not be pruned, nor digged; but there fhall come up briersand thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hofts is the houfe of Ifrael, and the men

of

Judah his pleafant plant: and he look

ed for judgment, but behold oppref

God's judgment on covetousness. ISAIAH.

Ifaiah's vifion. fion; for righteousness, but behold a cry. because they have caft away the law of 8 Woe unto them that join houfe to the LORD of hofts, and despised the word houfe, that lay field to field, till there be of the Holy One of Ifrael. no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

9 in mine ears faid the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houfes fhall be defolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

10 Yea, ten acres of vineyard fhall yield one bath, and the feed of an homer thall yield an ephah.

25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath firetched forth his hand against them, and hath fmitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcafes were torn in the midft of the ftreets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is ftretched out ftill.

¶ Woe unto them that rife up early 26 And he will lift up an enfign to in the morning, that they may follow the nations from far, and will his unto ftrong drink; that continue until night, them from the end of the earth: and, betill wine inflame them! hold, they fhall come with speed swiftly: 12 And the harp, and the viol, the ta- 27 None fhall be weary nor ftumble bret, and pipe, and wine, are in their among them; none fhall flumber nor feafts: but they regard not the work of fleep; neither fhall the girdle of their the LORD, neither confider the operation loins be loofed, nor the latchet of their of his hands.. fhoes be broken:

13 ¶ Therefore my people are gone 28 Whofe arrows are fharp, and all into captivity, because they have no their bows bent, their horfes' hoofs fhall knowledge and their honourable men be counted like flint, and their wheels are famifhed, and their multitude dried like a whirlwind: up with thirst.

29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, 14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herfelf, they fhall roar like young lions: yea, and opened her mouth without measure: they fhall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and their glory, and their multitude, and fhall carry it away fafe, and none and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, fhall deliver it. fhall defcend into it.

15 And the mean man fhall be brought down, and the mighty man fhall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:

16 Rut the LORD of hofts fhall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy fhall be fanctified in righteoufnefs.

17 Then fhall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones fhall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and fin as it were with a cart rope:

30 And in that day they fhall roar againft them like the roaring of the fea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and forrow, and the light is darkned in the heavens thereof.

CHAP. VI.

Ifaiah's vifion. 9 The obstinacy of the people, unto their defolation. 13 A remnant fhall be faved.

N the year that king Uzziah died I faw alfo the LORD fitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

2 Above it ftood the feraphims: each 19 That fay, Let him make speed, and one had fix wings; with twain he coverhaften his work, that we may fee it: anded his face, and with twain he covered let the counfel of the Holy One of Ifrael his feet, and with twain he did fly. draw nigh and come, that we may know it! 20 T Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darknefs; that put bitter for fweet, and fweet for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wife in their own eyes, and prudent in their own fight! 22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of ftrength to mingle ftrong drink:

23 Which juftify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the ftubble, and the flame confumeth the chaff, fo their root fhall be as rottennefs, and their bloffom fhall go up as duft:

3 And one cried unto another, and faid, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hofts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

4 And the pofts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with fimoke.

5 Then faid I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have feen the king, the LORD of hofts.

6 Then flew one of the feraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, aubich he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and faid, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and

Abaz is comforted.

Chap. vii.

Chrift promifed. thine iniquity is taken away, and thy fin | within threefcore and five years fhall Epurged. phraim be broken, that it be not a people. 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's fon. If ye will not believe, furely ye shall not be established.

8 Alfo I heard the voice of the LORD, faying, Whom fhall I fend, and who will go for us? Then faid I, Here am I; fend me.

9¶ And he faid, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and fee ye indeed, put perceive not.

Io Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and thut their eyes; left they fee with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and underftand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

10 Moreover the LORD fpake again unto Ahaz, faying,

II Afk thee a fign of the LORD thy God; Afk it either in the depth, or in the height above.

12 But Ahaz faid, I will not afk, neither will I tempt the LORD.

13 And he faid, Hear ye now, O house

11 Then faid I, LORD, how long? And of David? Is it a fmall thing for you to he answered, Until the cities be wafted weary men, but will ye weary my God without inhabitant, and the houfes with-alfo?" out man, and the land be utterly defolate, 12 And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forfaking in the midft of the land.

13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it fhall return, and all be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whofe fubftance is in them, when they caft their leaves: fo the holy feed fhall be the fubftance thereof. CHAP. VII.

Ahaz is comforted by Ijaiah. 14 Christ promifed. 17 Abaz's judgment is propbefied to come by Affyria.

14 T Therefore the LORD himself shall give you a fign; Behold, a virgin fhall conceive, and bear a fon, and fhall call his name Immanuel.

15 Butter and honey fhall he eat, that he may know to refufe the evil, and choose the good.

16 For before the child fhall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorreft fhall be forfaken of both her kings.

17 The LORD fhall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy, fa

AND it came to pals in the days of ther's house, days that have not come,

Ahaz the fon of Jotham, the fon of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the fon of Remaliah, king of Ifrael, went up toward Jerufalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

2 And it was told the house of David, Saying, Syriaisconfederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.

from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Affyria.

18 And it fhall come to pass in that day, that the LORD fhall hifs for the fly that is in the uttermoft part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Affyria.

19 And they fhall come, and shall reft all of them in the defolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.

3 Then faid the LORD unto Isaiah, Go 20 In the fame day fhall the LORD fhave forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-with a rafor that is hired, namely, by them jafhub thy fon, at the end of the conduit beyond the river, by the king of Affyria, of the upper pool in the highway of the the head, and the hair of the feet: and it fuller's field; fhall alfo confume the beard.

4 And fay unto him, Take heed, and be 21 And it fhall come to pafs in that quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted day, that a man fhall nourish a young for the two tails of these fmoking fire-cow, and two fheep;

s Because Syria, Ephraim, and the fon of Remaliah, have taken evil counfel gainst thee, faying,

6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and fet a king in the midft of it, even the fon of Tabeal:

7 Thus faith the Lord GOD, It fhall not ftand, neither fhall it come to pass.

8 For the head of Syria is Damafcus, and the head of Damafcus is Rezin; and

23 And it fhall come to pafs in that day, that every place fhall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thoufand filverlings, it fhall even be for briers and thorns.

24 With arrows and with bows fhall men come thither; because all the land fhall become briers and thorns.
