The Lord the priest's inheritance. Chap. xix. ritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto - them.

3 ¶ And this fhall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a facrifice, whether it be ox or fheep; and they thall give unto the priest the fhoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.

4 The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, fhalt thou give him.

5 For the LORD thy God hath chofen him out of all thy tribes, to ftand to minifter in the name of the LORD, him and his fons for ever. ;

6 And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Ifrael, where he fojourned, and come with all the defire of his mind unto the place which the LORD fhall choose ;

Chrift the true Prophet. 18.I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I fhall command him.

19 And it fhall come to pafs, that whofoever will not hearken unto my words which he fhall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

20 ¶ But the prophet, which fhall prefume to fpeak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet fhall die.

21 And if thou fay in thine heart, How fhall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?

22 When a prophet fpeaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pafs, that is the thing 7 Then he fhall minifter in the name which the LORD hath not fpoken, but of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the prophet hath spoken it prefumptuthe Levites do, which stand there before oufly: thou fhalt not be afraid of him, the LORD. 2 Thou shalt feparate three cities for thee in the midft of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to poffefs it.

3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coafts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every flayer may flee thither.

4 ¶ And this is the cafe of the flayer, which fhall flee thither, that he may live: Whofo killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

II But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rife up against him, and fmite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of thefe cities:

12 Then the elders of his city hall fend and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to fave you.

5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, faying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his houfe, left he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

17 Then both the men, between whom the controverfy is, fhall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which fhall be in thofe days;

18 And the judges fhall make diligent inquifition: and, behold, if the witnefs be a falfe witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

19 Then fhall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: fo fhalt thou put the evil away from among you.

20 And thofe which remain fhall hear, and fear, and fhall henceforth commit no more any fuch evil among you.

21 And thine eye fhall not pity; but life hall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

CHAP. XX.

2 The priest's exhortation to encourage the people to battle. 10 How to use the cities that accept or refufe the proclamation of peace. 16 What cities must be devoted.

Wagainst thine enemies, and feeft

THEN thou goeft out to battle

horfes, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for

8 And the officers fhall fpeak further unto the people, and they fhall fay, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his houfe, left his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

9 And it fhall be, when the officers have made an end of fpeaking unto the people, that they fhall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

10 When thou comeft nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

I And it fall be, if it make thee anfwer of peace, and open unto thee, then it fhall be, that all the people that is found therein fhall be tributaries unto thee, and they fhall ferve thee.

12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou fhalt befiege it:

13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou fhalt fmite every male thereof with the edge of the fword:

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the fpoil thereof, fhalt thou take unto thyfelf; and thou fhalt eat the fpoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

15 Thus fhalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Expiation of an uncertain murder. Chap. xxi. 17 But thou shalt utterly deftroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebufites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; fo fhould ye fin against the LORD your God.

9 So fhalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the fight of the LORD.

IO When thou goeft forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou haft taken them captive,

II And feeft among the captives a beautiful woman, and haft a defire unto her, that thou wouldeft have her to thy wife;

12 Then thou fhalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;

2 Then thy elders and thy judges fhall come forth, and they fhall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is flain:

3 And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the flain man, even the elders of that city fhall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke;

4 And the elders of that city fhall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor fown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley:

5 And the priests the fons of Levi fhall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chofen to minifter unto him, and to blefs in the name of the LORD; and by their word fhall every controverfy and every stroke be tried;

14 And it fhall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou fhalt let her. go whither fhe will; but thou shalt not fell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandife of her, because thou haft humbled her.

15 If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they

loved and the hated; and if the firftborn fon be her's that was hated;

16 Then it fhall be, when he maketh his fons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the fon of the beloved firftborn before the fon of the hated, which is indeed the firftborn:

17 But he fhall acknowledge the fon of the hated for the firftborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his ftrength; the right of the firstborn is his.

18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious fon, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his. mother, and that, when they have chaftened him, will not hearken unto them:

19 Then fhall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

HOU fhalt not fee thy brother's ox

2 And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou fhalt bring it unto thine own houfe, and it fhall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou fhalt reitore it to him again.

3 In like manner fhalt thou do with his afs; and fo fhalt thou do with his raiment; and with all loft thing of thy brother's, which he hath loft, and thou haft found, fhalt thou do likewife: thou mayeft not hide thyfelf.

4 Thou shalt not fee thy brother's afs or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyfelf from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

5 T The woman fhall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither fhall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do fo are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

6 If a bird's neft chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam fitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young:

7 But thou shalt in any wife let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayeft prolong thy days.

8 When thou buildeft a new houfe, then thou fhalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine houfe, if any man fall from thence. 9 Thou shalt not fow thy vineyard with divers feeds: left the fruit of thy feed which thou haft fown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.

10 Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an afs together.

II Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers forts, as of woollen and linen to gether.

12 Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vefture, wherewith thou coverest thyself.

13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and fay, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid:

15 Then fhall the father of the damfel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate:

16 And the damfel's father fhall fay unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;

17 And, lo, he hath given occations of fpeech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they fhall fpread the cloth before the elders of the city.

18 And the elders of the city shall take that man and chastise him;

19 And they fhall amerce him in an hundred Shekels of filver, and give them unto the father of the damfel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Ifrael: and the fhall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

20 But if this thing betrue, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damfel:

21 Then they fhall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city fhall ftone her with ftones that the die: because he hath wrought folly in Ifrael, to play the whore in her father's houfe: fo fhalt thou put evil away from among you.

22¶ If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they fhall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: fo fhalt thou put evil away from Ifrael.

23 If a damfel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an hufband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

24 Then ye fhall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye fhall ftone them with ftones that they die; the damfel, becaufe fhe cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: fo thou fhalt put away evil from among you.

25 ¶ But if a man find a betrothed damfel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die:

26 But unto the damfel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damfel no fin worthy of death: for as when a man rifeth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even fo is this matter:

27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damfel cried, and there was none to fave her. 28 ¶ If

14 For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore fhall thy camp be holy: that he fee no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee:

15 Thou shalt not deliver unto his mafter the fervant which is escaped from his master unto thee:

16 He fhall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall

2 A bastard fhall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation fhall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

3 An Ammonite or Moabite fhall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation fhall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:

4 Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and becaufe they hired against thee Balaam the fon of Beor of Pethor of Mefopotamia, to curfe thee.

5 Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curfe into a bleffing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

6 Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their profperity all thy days for ever.

7 Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother: thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; becaufe thou waft a ftranger in his land.

8 The children that are begotten of them fhall enter into the congregation of the LORD in their third generation.

¶ When the hoft goeth forth against thine enemies, then keep thee from every wicked thing.

10 If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then fhall he go abroad out of the camp, he fhall not come within the camp:

II But it fhall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the fun is down, he fhall come into the camp again.

12 Thou shalt have a place alfo without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad:

him beft: thou shalt not opprefs him.

17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Ifrael, nor a fodomite of the fons of Ifrael.

18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the houfe of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

19 Thou shalt not lend upon ufury to thy brother; ufury of money, ufury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon ufury:

20 Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon ufury; but unto thy brother thou fhalt not lend upon ufury: that the LORD thy God may blefs thee in all that thou fetteft thine hand to in the land whither thou goeft to poffefs it.

21 When thou fhalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou fhalt not flack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be fin in thee.

22 But if thou fhalt forbear to vow, it fhall be no fin in thee.

23 That which is gone out of thy lips thou fhalt keep and perform; even a free will offering, according as thou haft vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou haft promised with thy mouth.

24 ¶ When thou comeft into thy neigh-bour's vineyard, then thou mayeft eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy veffel.

25 When thou comeft into the ftanding corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou fhalt not move a fickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.
