unto him as our guide and conductor, wherefoever his commands will lead us.

We should also then firmly believe, that all the bleffings of the new covenant are made over to us, by this giving and receiv ing of his facred body; and that we fhall thereby, if it is not our own fault, receive pardon, and grace, and ftrength, and falvation. And what joy will this create in our fouls, that we are united to Chrift's body, and made capable of receiving all the benefits of his death and paffion? What a delight fhould it be unto us, to believe, that unless it be through our own grofs negligence, fin fhall not have dominion over us; that the blood of Chrift cleanseth us from all unrighteousness; that the flames of hell fhall never touch us; that death is swallowed up in victory; that the grave is buried in the wounds of our Saviour; that we are fealed with the divine impreffion, and rendered capable of a blessed immortality, and to inherit the joys of our Lord?

When we have done these things, with the beft devotion we can, it will be a great refreshment

refreshment to the foul, if we turn it a little towards thofe who are the friends of our Lord. And therefore,

In the next place, When we fee the fume bread given to others, Let us renew acts of love unto our brethren. Let us think, that we being many, are but one body; and that we are members one of another. Let us love one another, with a pure and unfeigned love. Let us remember the great love of our Lord unto us all; and that will extinguish in us all the fparks of envy, anger, or malice one towards another. When we feel the love of God in our hearts, all our anger will turn into love, and all our enemies will find us friends: Let us refolve therefore, now that we remember his love to enemies, that we will never bear any hatred more. Let us refolve, now that we fee how he diftributes himself to us all, that we will never despise the meaneft brother; that the eye shall not fay to the foot I have no need of thee; that one member shall not injure another; that we will live in all peace and love,

bearing

bearing one another's infirmities, kindly accepting of reproofs, doing all the good we can to foul and body, that all men may know us to be Chrift's difciples. That we may do thus, let every man think as seriously as he can with himself,-Did Christ die only for him, or for others also? Have we not all eaten of the fame bread? Are we not about to drink of the fame cup? How fhall we hate those whom Chrift loveth? How fhall we envy those to whom he is fo liberal? And how fhall we offend one of those for whom Chrift died?

AGAIN; When we receive the cup, it is fit that we should again admire the won'derful love of God, that he would purchafe us to himself by his own blood. And we should confider the great and ineftimable value of this blood, that could make expiation, and give God full fatiffaction for fuch a world of offences. The infinite virtue likewife, as well as value of this facrifice, should be taken into our thoughts, which lafts for ever, and is now as fresh and full of efficacy, as if the blood were newly fhed upon the crofs.

And let us confider likewise, what danger there is, if we reject those terms of reconciliation and pardon offered to us by the blood of Christ. When we behold the blood of the Son of God poured out, and his body broken; we fhould think what the danger will be of not being stedfast in his covenant. God will require his Son's blood at our hands. The Lord of that fervant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour when he is not aware, and will appoint him his portion with the hypocrites.

Let us seriously reflect, what the doom of all those will be, who rebel against him, to whom they have fo often vowed obedience. The love of God cannot make them love him; the blood of Chrift cannot purge away their fin; and all the bands that he can lay upon them, will not hold them faft. What chains of darkness therefore are referved for them? What a facrifice must they be to the vengeance of God, whom the facrifice of Chrift upon the cross could not deliver? The wrath of God will utterly confume, and burn them

op. They shall be a whole burnt-offering to his fiery indignation. They themselves fhall fatisfy for their fins, and then they can never be fatisfied for. Thefe men take all the guilt of their fins upon their own fouls, and go fearlessly to hell, where they shall lament their folly and obftinacy to all eternity.

AFTER all this, Let us on the other hand, meditate a little on the joys of heaven, on the eternal fupper of the Lamb, and the bleffed life we fhall live above. We should confider, that the joys of this world are but weak foretaftes of those pleasures that God will hereafter bestow upon us, if we will render ourselves capable of receiving them; that our feasting on the symbols of his body and blood here, are but types and fhadows of the everlasting feaft in heaven, when our fouls fhall be fatisfied as with marrow and fatnefs, whilft our mouth praiseth him with joyful lips. We should look upon these symbols here, as affurances of better things to come, where our appetites and all our de
