corps at the battles of Meeanie and Hydrabad, the Right Honour. able the Governor-General in council is pleased to resolve that an honorary standard, bearing a suitable device, be presented to the 9th Bengal light cavalry, and that a jemadar be added to the present establishment of that regiment.

COURTS.MARTIAL.

ENS. JAS. EVANS, 67th N.l. Head- Quarlers, Camp Nugul. Jan. 14, 1815. - At a General Court-martial assembled at Nowgong, in Bundelcund, on Saturday, Dec. 28, 1844, Ens. J. Evans, 67th N.I., was arraigned on the following charge:

Charge. - For unbecoming conduct, in having addressed to Capt. S. Williams, of the 8th N.I., a letter, dated Banda, Aag. 4, 1844, containing highly insulting language towards the said Capt. Williams, and in having refused to recall or retract the same, notwithstanding that Capt. Williams had, in a letter, dated Aug. 8, 1814, addressed to Maj. J. Ferris, C. B., which letter was communicated to Ens. Evans, disclaimed having acted in the manner alleged by Ens. Evans; and further declared, that if he had unintentionally erred or had misunderstood Ens. Evans in any instance, he was sorry for it; and which disavowal and expression of sorrow, if misunderstanding had arisen through Capt. Williams, was repeated by him, in a letter, dated Allahabad, Aug. 15, 1844, to the address of the officer commanding the 67th N.I.

Finding. - The Court having maturely weighed and considered all that has been adduced in support of the prosecution as well as what has been urged on the defence, are of opinion that the prisoner Ens. J. Evans, 67th N.I., is guilty of the charge.

Sentence. The Court, having found the prisoner Ens. J. Evans, 67th N. I., guilty as above, do sentence him to be reprimanded in such manner as his Exc. the Com.-in-Chief may be pleased to direct.

(Signed) &c. &c. Head-quarters, Camp Umballah, Jan. 11, 1845.

Remarks by the Commander-in-Chief:- The Commander-inChief conceives that the verdict of the Court is a sufficient vin. dication of Capt. Williams and an atonement for the insult given. The Com.-in-chief at the same time trusts, that the lenient sentence passed upon Ens. Evans will convince him how un. justifiable have been his imputations on Capt. Williams, and of the impropriety of rejecting the explanation offered by that officer.

The officer commanding the 67th N. I. will assemble the offi. cers of the regt., and in their presence read to Ens, Evans this general order, the promulgation of which his exc. considers will be a sufficient reprimand to Ens. Evans.

Ens. Evans is to be released from arrest, and to return to his duty.

With a gratuity of one year's pay of the regimental rank of the officer.

The following Charge and Finding and Sentence in the case of Mr. Master Pilot R. F. Barlow, are published with the sanction of Government, as a warning to the service against giving annoyance to commanders of vessels in a similar manner, and for general information.

Ist Instance. — In having said to Capt. Taylor in a very insult. ing and unbecoming manner, upon his declining to have a steamer for the ship, that he (Mr. Barlow) did not care; if he did not get up this month he should the next, and if not then, till the month of March and April, when he should be sure of a southerly wind; that it made no difference to him; his salary was three hundred rupees a month, and that when he arrived at Calcutta he would be put into another ship, or words to that effect.

2nd Instance. In having said, in a provoking and exciting manner in the presence of some of the crew, that six Yankees were as good as twelve Englishımen, or words to that effect.

3rd Instance. - In having, while heaving in the starboard chain with the helm bard at starboard, vexatiously refused to ease the helm to allow the chain to come in with advantage, telling the officers and crew at the same time that “the head that could ease them was the head that could tease them," and he should take care they should have plenty of it, or words to that effect.

4th Instance.- In having, in a very arrogant and assuming manner, demanded that Capt. Taylor should remain on deck while the ship was under weigh, although the officers and crew were all at their stations,
