among mankind, this invention consitutes, next to the establishment of Christianity, the most interesting and important.

On Sunday last we had Divine Service performed in the forenoon and evening to the community by the Rev. Mr. Morant; the troops had service in their respective barracks read to them. The Rev. Mr. Lutyens has now returned from his pastoral tour, so that we shall now have the four full services on Sundays.

A fine young officer, Lieut. C. E. K. Lambe, of the 43rd native infantry, who had been at Madras on leave, and was returning, was, it appears, taken ill at Baitmunglum of fever and small pox: he reached this very ill, and survived only four days, having died last Monday night, and his remains were interred on Tuesday evening, Major gen. Sewell, c. B., and mostly all the officers at the station attending the funeral. Some few cases of small-pox have also recently occurred amongst native children here, and there are reports of cases of cholera in some villages around, but in general all in and about the cantonment are particularly healthy. The weather is very hot during the day; and the country begins to wear a rather parched and dry appearance, although there appears to be plenty of water in all the tanks in the neighbourhood.

Maj. gen. J. Allan, C. B., arrived here on Saturday last; a salute from the arlillery park announced the same. Since the general's appointment to the command of the division, he has nominated Capt. Hicks, the deputy assistant adjutant general, his acting aide-de-camp.

The troops at this station were out (with the exception of the artillery) at field exercise on Tuesday morning last, on the cantonment parade ground, under Major general Sewell, C. B. The artillery are now busily engaged at their annual practice, at the butt, south-east of the cantonment, where such as are fond of seeing the practice are highly gratified. The European troop of horse artillery which recently arrived here from Jaulnah, under Captain Fishe, appear to be in very excellent order and condition, both men and horses, notwithstanding the long march they had. We never remember to have seen a greater number of ponies than there are at present about the cantonment, of all descriptions, tattoos, Colar colts, Poonamallee Arabs, and real pegues; they are actually swarming. The troop from Jaulnah brought a great many, and many of the non-commissioned officers and men of the 1st fusiliers, as well as officers' servants, brought more with them; and these are now being offered for sale at prices of course much less than they are honestly worth.

OOSSOOR, FEB. 26.-The weather is very hot during the day, the nights invariably cold and damp: thermometer ranges from 82 to 84 degrees in the day.

I am sorry to say that cholera has made its appearance in this village; two or three have fallen victims to it, and I am informed that two died at the remount from it last night. The disease has been raging in a village (Attapilly) about five miles from this, situated on the frontier of the Mysore country, for some days past, and I am told that many have been swept away by it in that village. This scourge generally rages about here in the months of February and March.

The ryots have been very busily employed for some time past in threshing, and sifting raggy, and stacking straw-the tanks are becoming low. The markets continue to be well supplied with grain, sheep, fowls, &c., and prices continue reasonable.

The Rev. Messrs. Rice and Sewell of the London Mission Society have been out here from Bangalore, and are labouring in the adjacent villages amongst the heathen.

Mr. Molle, of the civil service, passed through this for Bellary a few days ago.

A detail of eleven men of the 2nd E. L. I. who were left at Bangalore, on the march of the regiment, arrived here this morning, on their way to Trichinopoly; Dr. Cleghorn is proceeding with them in medical charge.

MARCH 3. I am sorry to say that cholera continues its ravages here, and the number of victims daily is said to be from twenty-five to thirty-awful mortality for such a small place as this is; the disease is causing great alarm, and people from other places will not in consequence come here to transact their usual business. I am informed that two of the convicts have this day been carried off by the scourge. No cases at the remount.

Native travellers are seen here and there lying dead on the side of the road. It is with regret I have to say that there is no person here to give the poor people any medical aid, especially to the convicts of the jail, and also a number of peons, who are by regulation, I believe, entitled to medical assistance from Government.

The weather continues very warm. I hear that the sub-collector (Mr. Bret) is carrying on the jummabundy of this district and is now at Rajpoor.

Arrivals and Departures.-Messrs. Gomes and Coombs, from

Bangalore to Madras; Apothecary Brayson, of the Bombay establishment from Madras to Bombay.

BERHAMPORE, FEB. 25.-Colonel Hutton, of the 22d regt. N.I., who was recently removed to the 30th regt., relinquished the command of the former corps on the 8th instant, which now devolves on Captain Russell, as senior officer.

P. B. Smollet, Esq. collector and agent to the governor in Ganjam, left Aska with his establishment for Goomsoor on the 18th instant.

Assistant apothecary Murray, who was lately removed in G. O. to the 2nd European regiment light infantry, and subsequently to H.M.'s 25th regiment at Cannanore, started a short time ago to join his corps, but has since been ordered to return and do duty with the company of sappers and miners at Golintra, and accompany them on their march to Bangalore, from whence he is to proceed to join his regiment. The detachment of sappers and miners. I believe, will not move until relieved by the company from Kamptee, which is shortly expected.

The officers of the 22nd regiment are getting their bungalows on the coast put into order, before the setting in of the hot weather.

Catarrh has been prevailing to some extent during the last fortnight.

During the past week two or three heavy showers of rain have fallen, accompanied with loud peals of thunder, and some vivid flashes of lightning. The new cooltee is now being brought in, and is sold at a cheaper rate than last month; but the quantity of rain that has fallen will, it is said, prove detrimental to the other dry grains lately cultivated.

Arrival. Ensign Dinsdale, 22nd regiment, from Russellcondah.

POONAMALLEE.-The left wing of H. M. 94th foot arrived at this place on the 21st of February. The strength of the wing is stated to be 3 Captains, 5 Lieutenants, 3 Ensigns, 2 Assistant surgeons, and 422 non-commissioned and rank and file. The wing will remain at Poonamallee until all is ready for its embarkation.-United Service Gazette.

BELLARY.-The 2nd Cavalry marched from Bellary on route for Belgaum on the morning of the 24th February, leaving the recruits and young horses behind together with the families. The corps marches as light as possible, no bandies accompanying it. The 2nd is stated to be in splendid order and has the fol lowing officers present :-Lieut.-Colonel M'Neil, Major Inglis, Bt. Captains Edwards, North, and Carruthers; Lieuts. M'Donald and Monckton; Cornets Jones, Clarke, and Mayne. Lieut. and Adjt. Russell remains behind on sick certificate, and Captain Taylor with Riding Master Dillon are in charge of the recruits, young horses, and lines.

SHOLAPORE.-The head quarter wing of the 5th Light Cavalry returned to Sholapore on the 26th February; and the 3rd Nizam's Cavalry marched for Goolburgah on the following morning.

SECUNDERABAD.-A letter from this place mentions that the 1st Regiment was to march for Belgaum on the 4th March, and to be replaced by the 13th from Chicacole.

DEPARTURE OF INVALIDS.-One hundred and forty invalids of H. M. Service, with sixteen women and fourteen children embarked on board the Lady Flora, for England, on Wednesday morning. Two Captains and one Lieutenant accompany these details. The remainder of the invalids at the depôt, thirty-one in number, will embark this morning on board the True Briton, under command of Captain Deere, H. M. 94th Foot; as also a party of the company's invalids, under Captain Hornsby, of the 2nd European Light Infantry.-United Service Gazette, February 28th.

PAULGHAUT, MARCH 3.-Govindoo Row, an account of whose murderous exploits appeared in your issue of the 20th December last, gave Justice the slip by quietly dying in the gaol at this station on the 21st ultimo, thus verifying his own predic tion "that he was never born to be hanged." He appeared for several weeks past to decline daily,-the consequence of repeated long fits of abstinence from food under the plea of illness, as well as of his sufferings from an inveterate sinus into which a slight bayonet wound in the thigh had degenerated; these in the end proved too much for his originally strong constitution, and the miserable culprit sank at length in spite of every possible aid of medicine or nourishment which could be resorted to for the prolongation of his existence.

About three o'clock on the morning of the 22nd February, Major General Gibson arrived here from Trichinopoly, and at Six A.M. inspected the 19th regt. N. I. in heavy marching order. The gallant veteran declared himself in the highest degree pleased with the smart and soldier-like appearance of this fine body of men, and so far as an observant spectator might venture an opinion his approva lwas indeed justly merited. The general

next visited the sepoy lines, and proceeded thence to the fort, where he examined the cash chest, and inspected the barracks, hospital, and military stores, with the whole of which he expressed himself perfectly satisfied. At 11 AM. the same day, an examination of the books of companies and departments took place, and I am assured that those of the regimental staff in particular elicited the strongest expressions of the general's approbation. In consequence of a strong treasure escort of the corps being under orders to start for the presidency on the 25th, and the general's desire to see the whole corps at exercise together, the programme of the review was altered, and the regiment formed in full dress for manoeuvre on the morning of the 24th. On this particular head it will suffice to say that the steadiness of the men under arms, the celerity and precision of every movement, together with the correctness and rapidity of their firing, called forth the admiration of all beholders, and won the general's warmest thanks and praise of officers and men. The same evening the general and staff (Captain Farquhar, deputy assistant adjutant general) partook of an elegant dinner at the mess, the attractions of which were enhanced by the brilliant execution of several popular melodies by the band of the regiment. At dawn on the 25th the regiment again moved out in column, with the regular beats and calls, and took post at the base of the southern glacis from whence picquets and out posts were detached and the whole routine of field duties gone through. The following morning witnessed the sham capture of the fort by escalade, and the regiment at garrison and sentry duties, after which the general saw the commissioned, non-commissioned officers, and drummers, at the sword exercise, and finished the review by, spending a considerable time in looking at the artillery squad which, under the superintendence of the quarter master sergeant, acquitted themselves with credit. An order published in the course of the day conveyed to the officers, non-commissioned, &c. &c., an assurance that their exertions to give satisfaction had been duly appreciated by the reviewing officer.

The hot winds are now blowing their worst, the thermometer stands at 94 in the shade from 11 A.M. to 5 P. M., and I regret to inform you that small pox and measles are very prevalent and doing serious mischief.

Arrivals.-H. D. Cooke, Esq., assistant collector, from Bombay; Lieut. Hill, civil engineer, on duty.

Departures.-Major general Gibson and Captain Farquhar, D.A. A. G. Trichore and Quilon; Ensign Newlyn, with treasure escort to Madras; Lieut. col. Yaldwyn, Neilgherry Hills, on division leave.

TRICHINOPOLY, MARCH 5.-The station is now becoming extremely warm, with an increase of epidemic and endemic diseases. The cholera has been very severe for the last month amongst the natives of this place; more especially the sepoys and followers of the native corps, the casualties amongst whom have been very great. One of the native magistrates of this station fell a victim to the scourge the other day. Besides the cholera, fever is committing dreadful ravages among the Europeans of the 2nd regiment who not long ago arrived from Bangalore. So great is the severity of the disease that three and four are being buried every day.

Brigade exercise is kept up here every Monday, under Colonel Cleveland, commanding the station; except the first Monday of each month, when there is a general line parade in lieu of brigade exercise.

Major general Gibson, commanding the division, is on his tour of inspection; the last orders received from him are dated Quilon.

Superintending surgeon Knox has been absent from the station inspecting the different hospitals within the division; he is at present at the Neilgherries.

During the last month several detachments of the 44th regiment N. I. have been sent to the petty stations to relieve those of the 39th N.I. during their march, they were all more or less attacked with cholera.

A case of sudden death took place yesterday; the man was a trooper of the 4th light cavalry. It is reported that he was relieved from guard in the morning, after which he took his break. fast and went to bed, from which he never rose again; he was found a corpse at 11 A.M. From a post mortem examination it appeared that the poor fellow died from serous apoplexy.

Arrival.-Dr. Kirkpatrick, 4th light cavalry, from Paulghaut. Departures. Capt. McDonald, paymaster, to Madras; Capt. Brett, 4th light cavalry, to do.; Lieut. King, 4th light cavalry, to the Hills; Assist. apothecary Evers, to Wallajabad; Qu. master sergeant Black, 4th light cavalry, to Arcot.

ONGOLE, FEB. 22. An unfortunate circumstance occurred here on Sunday evening last, the 16th inst. A private of the company of veterans attached to this garrison died suddenly in the bazar. It appears he had been quarrelling there, and became

over-excited from abusive language applied to him by his antagonist; he laid himself down opposite a shed in the bazar, saying he felt unwell. The people who went to see what was the matter, found him lifeless; he was taken home, and thence to the hospital. It is thought the man came to his death by the rupture of some large blood-vessel.

Arrivals and Departures.-February 18th, Captain Roberts, 49th N.I., and family, from Nagpore to Madras; 19th, E. Lochart, Esq. C.S., from Guntoor to Salem; 21st, Lieut. Carter, 38th N.I., from Secunderabad to Madras; 21st, Apothecary Snuggs, of the S. S. D., N.D., from Trichinopoly to Masulipatam. MARCH 2.-One havildar and four privates of the 1st native veteran battalion from Madras, arrived here the day before yesterday, in charge of eight bandy loads of medical stores for the northern division of the army. They left this morning for Masulipatam. The weather in this part of the country is becoming warmer every day, obliging one to keep within doors.

Arrivals and Departures.- February 25th, Assistant apothecary Martin, 38th N.I., from Secunderabad to Madras; 28th, Lieut. and Mrs. Dyer, 36th N.I., from Madras to Secunderabad; March 1st, Mr. W. R. Rollo, revenue surveyor, on duty from Masulipatam to Nellore; 2nd, D. S. Young, Esq. superintending surgeon, ceded districts, on annual tour of inspection of hospitals, from St. Thomas's Mount to Guntoor.

MARCH 9.-A gooroo, or priest, of some note among the Bramins, who is on his way from the southward to visit Chundoo Lall, or some such great personage, in the service of the Nizam, at Hyderabad, has made a stay here nearly the whole of last week; his arrival was ushered in with great noise and dancing, He is of the caste of Bramins that use three parallel strokes on the forehead. The whole village on the occasion of his entrance, I might say, was deserted. He is highly venerated by his followers,—indeed, so great is the respect they entertain for him that they almost worship him; their words and actions prove this. He has a large retinue of servants, amounting to about sixty. A present of one elephant in rich trappings, and two horses, has been made to him by the person at Hyderabad alluded to above; and from the Hindoo inhabitants of this place he has received upwards of Rs. 1000 in cash and valuables. The people at Nellore did not fail to do their duty towards him, and before he arrives at Hyderabad he will have drained well the intermediate villages of all the cash they have.

Arrivals and Departures.-March 2d, Lieuts. D. W. M'Kinnon and A. Wyndham, from Secunderabad to ditto; 5th, Lieut. Fowler, 8th, L. C., from Secunderabad to ditto; 8th, Assistant apothecary R. Heynes, 8th L.C., from Secunderabad to Madras, on sick certificate.

VIZAGAPATAM, MARCH 2.-C. J. Shubrick, Esq., acting principal assistant to the agent of the Governor of Fort St. George, arrived here lately, and assumed charge of the office, which was relinquished by J. F. Bury, Esq., who embarked in the Amelia for Madras, with his lady.

I understand that the collector and his suite have arrived from Palcondah at Bimlipatam, where it is expected they will remain a short time.

A rumour is afloat to the effect, that the 13th N. I. at present located at Chicacole is to be removed to Secunderabad shortly, and a supply of camp equipage was lately forwarded for its use from this station.

The barque James Hall anchored in the roads yesterday morning and a salute from the fort battery announced the subsequent landing of Gen. Welsh, whose return hither to resume the command of the northern division has been hailed with extreme satisfaction by all classes of the community, with whom the general appears to be exceedingly popular.

Capt. R. Lambart, deputy judge advocate general left this recently for his destination, via Calcutta, whither he has repaired in the barque Annunchunder, which touched here lately on her way to that port.

Mr. W. H. Ross, the principal Sudder Ameen of this station arrived here in the James Hall and resumed charge of his office yesterday.

The weather is becoming very warm, and the approaching hot season I should predict will be a scorching one.

Arrival. Rev. Mr. Johnson, from Madras.
Departure.-Major Bidingfield, to Madras.

;

ARCOT, MARCH 3.-The 6th light cavalry lately received from the Oossoor stud, a fresh batch of 169 remount horses; one of them was shot immediately, in consequence of being diseased most of these animals appear to be of the Mysore cross breed, and not likely to turn out so good as those of yore; when the late Col. Grant and Capt. Campbell had charge of the remount department, Government contracted with Bombay dealers at the rate of Rs. 450 for a horse, and Rs. 350 for a colt. The whole of the European and native officers of the 6th light

cavalry are practising their new drill, for which purpose they attend from 10 to 12 o'clock at the European hospital.

MARCH 11.-A few days ago, a peon of the civil police, whilst in the execution of his duty, was stabbed by a Mahomedan; he was immediately conveyed to the cantonment hospital, where he expired yesterday at six P.M.; the body was dissected this morning, and it was found that the instrument with which the wound had been inflicted entered between the fifth and sixth rib; the wound was about two inches in depth. The delinquent had been apprehended and sent to Chittoor, to take his trial.

A detachment of the 49th N.I. arrived here this morning, to relieve the one sent here last month.

E. C. Lovell, Esq., acting collector, arrived at this station a few days ago, on his tour of Jummahabundy, and it is supposed that he will remain here for a fortnight.

R. B. M. Binning, Esq., was sworn in, by E. C. Lovell, Esq., as acting sub-collector of this zillah.

BOMBAY. MISCELLANEOUS.

Letters from Belgaum state that the Court Martial on Lieutenant Colonel Wallace had not commenced its labours on the 26th of March. General MacNeil, the President of the Court, had not then arrived there.

ACCIDENT TO THE "BERENICE," AND DETENTION OF THE MAIL. The Overland Mail of the 7th of February did not reach Bombay till the evening of the 24th ultimo, being ten days overdue. Public anxiety at so unusual an occurrence was very great, and in fact rose to such a pitch, that the government despatched the steam frigate Sesostris, and a schooner, the Mali, in search of the missing packet. It appears that three days after her departure from Suez, the Berenice found the crank of her main shaft loose, and was obliged to make the best of her way with one engine to Judda, where the defect was temporarily amended; this occasioned a delay at that port of one week. She brought out 147 mail packages.

We learn with much pleasure that the grand Causeway at Mahim, which is to unite that part of Bombay with Salsette, and for which the public of both islands is indebted to the munificence and public spirit of Sir Jemsetjee Jeejeebhoy, Knight, and to the care and energy of Captain Cruikshank as the engineer, is now thoroughly completed, and will be opened in due form by the Hon. the Governor and the charitable founder on Tuesday next, the 8th instant.-Gentleman's Gazelle, April 1.

The Bombay regatta came off on Saturday, and afforded much amusement to the lovers of aquatic sports. Our English news prevents us from giving any detailed notice. One boat, the Young Caledonia, capsized outside the light vessel, but fortunately without loss of any kind. The winners were the Rhoderich, General Wood's boat, and the Lilly.-Bombay Courier, March 11.

The Bishop of Bombay has recently returned from his long tour to the North.-Bombay Witness, March 27.

Each Friday evening during Lent the Venerable the Archdeacon bas delivered lectures in the Cathedral. His subjects were taken from the beatitudes. We learn that the lectures are to be continued.-Ibid.

The Rev. J. M. Mitchell has returned from Nagpoor. We learn that an arrangement has been made by which the two German Brethren who for some time past have been labouring there, are to be taken into the employment of the mission connected with the Free Church of Scotland.-Ibid.

LAUNCH.-On Tuesday, about twelve o'clock, a pretty little steamer was launched from the building-yard at Mazagon; she was named the Parsee, by Ardaseer Cursetjee, Esq., who built her for the company of which Messrs. Jeejeebhoy Dadabhoy, Sons, and Co. are at present the managing directors. This vessel is 101 feet 1 inch long, 13 feet 11 inches broad, and 7 feet 2 inches deep. Measuring 90 tons, it will have an engine of 20horse power, and, when loaded with coals and passengers, will draw only 3 feet of water. She is the sister vessel to the Sir James Rivett Carnac, and destined for trips to Surat and the coast.-Gentleman's Gazette, March 28.

MR. GONSALVES.-We are sorry to mention the death here, on the 27th ultimo, after a lingering illness, brought on, we believe, by privations incurred in the public service, of Mr. J. M. Gonsalves, formerly attached as draughtsman to the Mission to Cabool under the late Sir Alexander Burnes, in 1836, 7, and 8. -Mr. Gonsalves is honourably referred to in Sir Alexander's posthumous work on Cabool as a valuable public servant, and an entertaining private companion; and he acquitted himself with such credit throughout the whole of his wanderings with that officer, that he not only received his approbation, but even that of the Governor General of India. He was a native of Goa, educated at the Propaganda of that city, and could converse in Latin, English, and French, besides being anaccomplished musician and draughtsman. Some of our readers will probably recollect the finished drawings exhibited by him some years ago in Bombay, as specimens of a work which he proposed then to publish, but which he abandoned in consequence, we believe, of the sudden fall of his patron at Cabool. Mr. Gonsalves was considerably in advance of most of his countrymen, and we should be glad to see some more of them following the path to credit which he so perseveringly pursued.-Bombay Times, March 5.

CIVIL. APPOINTMENTS, &c.

ANDREWS, W. C. to be agt. for the hon. the gov. and judge of Surat.

ARBUTHNOT, Sir R. K. Bart. to be polit. com. for Guzerat, and resident at Baroda.
