Guilty of the fourth additional charge, Guilty of the fifth additional charge. Sentence-The Court having found the prisoner guilty, as above specified, and the same being in breach of the Articles of War, does adjudge him, the said Lieut. M. R. Pilford, 96th foot, to be cashiered.

Approved and confirmed, with the exception of the finding on the second additional charge.

(Signed) H. GOUGH, General, Com.-in-chief, East Indies. Head-Quarters, Camp Indurgh, Nov. 27, 1844. Remarks by the Court.-The Court, at the conclusion of its proceedings, feels itself called on to notice the highly indecorous conduct evinced by the prisoner on several occasions during the trial, and the general style and tenor of his various addresses.

Remarks by the Com.-in-chief in India.—The Com.-in-chief is of opinion that the letters of Lieut. Pilfold, on which the second additional charge is based, do not support the criminal allegations contained in that charge.

His excellency Lieut. gen Sir Thomas MacMahon, Bart., X.C.B., is requested to communicate to the adj. gen., and to the military secretary, the day on which the sentence may be published at the head-quarters of the Bombay army, and also afford the same information to the officer commanding the forces in Australia.

By order of his Excellency the Com.-in-chief,

H. G. SMITH, Major general, Adjutant general, H. M. Forces in India.

ENS. G. R. BROWN.

Head-quarters, camp, Ferozepore, Dec. 5.-At a general Courtmartial assembled at Ferozepore, on the 26th Nov. 1814, Ens. George Rice Brown, 15th N.I., was arraigned on the following charge:

Charge. For having, at Ferozepore, on the afternoon of the 2nd Oct. 1844, appeared on the parade of the regiment in a disgraceful state of intoxication.

Finding and Sentence. -The Court, having maturely deliberated on the evidence produced before them, are of opinion, that the prisoner, Ens. George Rice Brown, of the 15th reg. N.I., is guilty of the charge preferred against him, and they do therefore sentence him, the prisoner Ens. George Rice Brown, 15th reg. N.I., to be suspended from rank, pay, and allowances, for a pe. riod of twelve months.

The sentence to take effect from the date of promulgation of this order to 15th reg. N.I., which is to be reported to the adj. gen. of the army.

By order, &c.

LIEUT. COL. G. W. MOSELEY, C.H.

Head Qu. Camp, Busseean, 12th Dec.-At a General CourtMartial assembled at Sukkur, on Thursday, 14th Nov. 1844, Lieut. col. G. W. Moseley, c. B. 2nd Bengal Eur. I. late of 64th Bengal N.I. was arraigned on the following charges:

1st Charge.-For gross and wilful neglect of duty, and direct breach of the articles of war, in having concealed from the Com.in-chief the existence of a mutiny which occurred in the 64th Bengal N.I. when on the line of march from Kurnaul towards Sinde, at camp, Moodkee, on or about the 13th and 14th days of March, 1844, at which periods he, Lieut. col. Moseley, was in command of the regiment.

2nd Charge-For scandalous conduct, subversive of all miliili tary discipline and highly derogatory to the commanding officer of a regiment, in the following instances:

1st Instance. In having, at camp, Tibbee, while on the line of march from Kurnaul towards "Sinde," on or about the 15th of March, 1844, a day or two subsequent to the mutiny set forth in the first charge, on a public parade of the 64th Bengal N.I., published the contents of a letter from the adjutant-general of the army, dated 13th of March, 1844, addressed to him, Lieut. col. Moseley, comm. 64th Bengal N.I., on the supposition that that corps was in a high state of discipline, and proceeding unhesitatingly towards Sukkur, which he, Lieut. col. Moseley, well knew was not the fact; and consequently, the contents referred to were wholly inapplicable to the 64th Bengal N.I.. and the publication of the same to that corps was a gross and shame. ful proceeding, and calculated to compromise the Com.-in-chief in the opinion of the sepoys of the 64th regt.

2nd Instance.-In having, at the parade alluded to, in the first instance of this charge, most egregiously and wilfully perverted the contents of the aforesaid letter, by holding out false hopes to the men of the regiment as to the extent of the allowances which would be granted to them in Sinde; viz. the same they had in Gen. Pollock's army, as emanating from Com.-in chief, whose

letter made no such provision; such deceptive, unauthorized, and injudicious conduct having led to an ulterior mutiny of the 64th Bengal N. I. at Shikarpore.

3rd Charge. For scandalous and infamous conduct, unbecoming the character of an officer and a gentleman, in having addressed a letter, dated March 17, 1844, to the adj. gen. of the army, in which letter the said Lieut. col. Moseley suppressed all allusion to the mutiny set forth in the first charge, the tenor of the said letter being false, and calculated to impress on the adj. gen. and his excellency the Co:n.-in-chief, the belief that the. 64th Bengal N.I., during the march from Kurnaul towards Sinde, had been constantly in excellent order, he, Lieut. col. Moseley, well knowing such to be contrary to the truth.

4th Charge. For scandalous and infamous conduct unbecoming the character of an officer and a gentleman, in having addressed a letter to Maj. gen. Fast, commanding the Sirhind division, dated the 9th April, 1844, in which letter he, Lieut. col. Moseley, positively and solemnly denies the existence of any misconduct on the part of the 64th Bengal N.I., while on the march from Kurnaul towards Sinde, the same being a direct and wilful falsehood, as Lieut. col. Moseley well knew that so violent was the mutinous disposition shewn at Moodkee, that when he ordered the 64th regt. to march, the colours were seized and the march of the regiment, at the appointed hour, was prevented by the mutineers.

Opinion. The prisoner Lieut. col. G. W. Moseley, C.B., 2nd Bengal Eur. Inf. late commanding 64th Bengal N.I., with regard to

1st Charge, guilty.

2nd Charge, with regard to preamble, guilty except the word "scandalous."

1st Instance, guilty as far as this sentence, "the contents referred to were wholly is applicable the 64th Bengal N.I.. but not guilty of the remainder of this instance, of which the Court do acquit the prisoner.

2nd Instance, guilty, except the words "most egregiously and wilfully," and in a subsequent portion of this instance, the word" deceptive."

3rd Charge, guilty, except the words "and infamous." 4th Charge,-Guilty.

Sentence.-The Court, having found the prisoner guilty to the extent above specified, which being in breach of the Articles of War, do now sentence him, the prisoner, Lieut. col. George Weyland Moseley, c. B., 2nd Bengal Eur. Inf., late commanding the 64th Bengal N.I., to be cashiered.

Signed, &c.

Head quars., camp, Bhaga Purana, 10th Dec. 1844.

RECOMMENDATION.

The Court, having performed the painful duty of sentencing the prisoner, Lieut. col. Moseley, c.B., as above stated, do now, in consideration of his long and meritorious services. beg respectfully to recommend his case to the favourable consideration of the Com-in-chief.

REMARKS BY HIS EXC. THE COM.-IN-CHIEF.

The Com.-in-chief deeply regrets that he is precluded from attending to the recommendation of the Court in favour of an officer who has served thirty-nine years; but the consequences of Lieur. col. Moseley's misconduct have been so prejudicial to discipline, so highly injurious to the public service, and productive of such unhappy results, that his exc. feels himself constrained to give full weight to the just sentence passed by the Court.

The name of Lieut. col. Moseley is to be struck off the list of the army from the date of publication of this order at Sukkuṛ, and a report of its having been so is to be made to the adj. gen. of the army. By order of R. LUMLEY, Major gen., adj. gen. of the army.

REPORT ON THE MARKETS.

30

4.0

5 0

CALCUTTA (Dec. 23).-Considering the season of the year, the sales of Mule Twist have been very extensive, upwards of 900 bales having changed hands during the week. No. 40 are most in request, and sales are a shade above previous rates. The higher counts being better supplied, are rather lower. A few sales have been made at market rates of Turkey red. In Cotton piece goods there has been less doing this week, in consequence of unfavourable accounts from the Upper Provinces, and former prices of some descriptions of Cloth are barely supported. Sales of Shirtings reported of about 6,500 pieces, grey, at market rates. The lower qualities continue in very moderate request. In white there has been little done, and sales are very inconsiderable. Jaconets: The bleached fabric is in improved demand, and the advance quoted in our last for the common qualities has been fully supported. Woollens: The market continues in the dullest possible state. Copper.-Sheathing is a little higher, 1,400 mds. having brought Co.'s Rs. 34-1 a 34-2. Tile have sold at Sa. Rs. 32. Spelter has further declined, and the demand is languid. Holders of Iron have again submitted to a decline.

MISCELLANEOUS.

We regret to announce the death, at Poonamallee, on the 11th inst. of Lieutenant Hutchinson, of H. M.'s 84th reg. The circumstances attending the melancholy event are very peculiar. He retired to his room on the evening of the day mentioned, and having unsheathed his sword, placed the hilt of it against the wall, and the point of it against his own side, and then, by pressing his body against the weapon. inflicted a wound of several inches in depth, which caused his death in the space of two hours. From five or six scarifications on the side, it appears he must have been foiled several times in the attempt to inflict a mortal wound, the progress of the weapon being resisted by the rib bones. Such an instance of cool and determined suicide we haver arely heard of. The coroner's inquest which sat on the body returned a verdict of temporary insanity.-Record, Nov. 26. The embarkation of the right wing of H. M.'s 94th reg. from Negapatam to Aden, has been postponed to the 15th proximo, for the purpose of allowing time for the arrival at Madras of recruits for that corps, they having embarked on board the Scotia early in September last. On the arrival of the recruits, the portion to be attached to the right wing of the 94th will be despatched by sea to Negapatam in the vessels engaged here for the conveyance of the wing to Aden; and those for the left wing will be detained at the Queen's depôt at Poonamallee, until its arrival from Trichinopoly, as it is under orders to proceed to Moulmein to replace H. M.'s 84th reg.- Circulator, Dec. 9.

The result of the trial of the trooper of the 1st cavalry for attempting the life of his officer, Lieut. Campbell. on parade, was, as must be expected, a sentence of death, which has been commuted by the Most Noble the Com.-in-chief to transporta
