IMPORTS.

BRITISH COTTON PIECE GooDs.-The dealers have continued to absent themselves from the market, their time as well as funds being at present occupied almost exclusively with opium. The last few days have brought somewhat more favourable accounts from Mirzapore, where rain had fallen, and it is probable that as produce arrives they will be enabled to operate more freely, the stocks in all the up-country marts being much reduced, Shirtings have changed hands to a moderate extent, and the tendency has been in favour of the buyer. Jacconets continue in fair inquiry,, more especially the medium qualities of bleached cloths. In lappets and lappet scarfs but Mulls little has been done, and at somewhat under former rates. and book muslins continue in very limited inquiry."

COLOURED AND PRINTED GOODS.-Printed goods have been in better demand, and a fair amount of sales are reported, but without improvement in price. In Turkey red cloths we have no change to notice, both twill and plain continuing in moderate inquiry at former rates.

WOOLLENS.We have no demand to notice for these goods, which continue neglected even at the low rates which holders would accept.

WHITE MULE TWIST.-Yarn has continued dull of sale throughout the past three weeks, with the exception of Nos. 20 and 30, which have been inquired for, and brought a slight advance; other counts have been purchased on rather easier terms, but still to a very moderate extent.

COLOURED YARN. The only transactions we have heard of lately under this head have been of Turkey red, German dye at 17. 10s. 9d., and British at 11. 8s. 2d. per Ib..

COPPER.-About the middle of last month, a demand sprung up, and sales to a moderate extent were effected at a slight advance on braziers' and tile this has, however, again fallen off, and although former rates are maintained, there is but little doing.

IRON. This metal continues entirely neglected by the dealers, who either have not as yet received any up-country orders, or cannot execute them, as they do not appear to interest themselves in the market.

SPELTER.The demand for this metal has again fallen off, and it is difficult of sale at the prices current on the 9th ultimo; few parties are however willing to submit to any decline, and we therefore hear of but few transactions.

LEAD AND TIN PLATES.-In lead the only sale we have heard of lately is a small one of pig stamped at Sa. Rs. 6.3. Tin plates maintain former quotations, but we have not heard of any transac

tions.

BEER.-The heavy imports have again led to a further decline in prices, and inferior brands have now become a perfect drug in the market; Bass' has been currently sold as low as Rs. 50 per hhd. but we have heard of no sales of Allsopps' under Rs. 60, and as we understand none of the latter's March brewings will be sent out this year, the supply will be so much reduced that the present relative difference between the value of their brand and that of any other brewers is likely to be maintained throughout the season.

EXPORTS.

INDIGO.-Our late accounts from the interior are not so flourish. ing as those previously received, particularly from the eastward (Furreedpore, Dacca, and Mymunsingh), where they have experienced very heavy rain; it also appears that the rain has injured the plant considerably in Rungpore, as well as in Jessore and Rajeshaye, and should the weather experienced in Calcutta during the past two or three days have extended to those districts, we shall doubtless shortly hear of further complaints. Rain was much wanted in others, as Nuddea, Maldah, Purneah, and Bhaugulpore, where the manufacture is progressing splendidly. From Tirhoot our accounts are rather favourable, as compared with those of last month; the western provinces are likewise promising well, provided they have early rains, and we hope to hear in a few days of their having regularly set in there, in which case they will cut a splendid koontie, with a probability of a good nowdah.

SUGAR.-At the date of our last the low state of the rivers had only allowed of small parcels coming to hand, and these consisted principally of good to fine qualities, which found a ready sale; since then, however, arrivals have been more free, and, except for the very finest descriptions, there has been but little demand; so that although we cannot as yet quote any material decline, the tendency is decidedly downwards. With low sugars the market is still very moderately supplied, and prices are almost nominal, For Khar the inquiry has fallen off, and transactions have been very limited.

SALTPETRE.-There is still a fair demand for this staple, and although there is not at present much dóing for Great Britain, the scarcity of some descriptions and the demand for America keeps up prices. For France we do not hear of any purchases, but small shipments have gone forward to China.

RAW SILK. This market continues very quiet, the large holders being still disinclined to submit to any decline, without which it is impossible that any general demand can be experienced; but as the unsold portion of the last bund is still very considerable, and the produce of the rainy bund will be coming to hand in about a month, we think considerably more anxiety to realize will shortly be manifested, in which case a material decline appears inevitable. The sales since our last have consisted almost entirely of small parcels, which have been taken at a shade under former rates.

SILK PIECE GOODS.-Our market continues well supplied with corahs of low quality, but for these there is no inquiry, and they are difficult of sale except at a considerable decline; the few parcels of first quality cloths, however, which have come to hand, have found purchasers at nearly former rates. Choppas and bandannas go forward on manufacturer's account, with the exception of small parcels of Radnagore, which are at times obtainable in this market.

RICE. The demand for table has continued moderate, and purchases have been far from heavy, without alteration in price. Moonghy and Ballam have been taken to some extent for Mauritius and Bourbon, at Rs. 1 8 to 1-10-6 per md.

OIL SEEDS.-The Americans continue the only purchasers of linseed, and are still taking off large quantities at from Rs. 2-2 to 2-6 per md. according to quality. Mustard seed is in request for Great Britain at former rates, but we are not aware of many purchases.

RUM.-This article is but little inquired for, nor are we aware of a single purchase, quotations are, therefore, still nominal. Exports to Great Britain in June amounted to 49,351 gallons.

SHELL LAC AND LAC DYE.-For shell lac there is at present but little inquiry for any part, and sales can only be effected at a deeline; this, however, the holders of European manufacture will not submit to, and transactions are therefore confined to a few purchases of low quality. Lac dye continues in demand and scarce, except native marks, which are not much wanted, and offering at about former rates.

JUTE.-The native holders still keep up the price of this staple by shipping, and we seldom hear of sales to any extent in this market.

SAFFLOWER, MUNJEET, GINGER, AND TURMERIC.-A large business continues to be done in safflower, without any material alteration in price for good quality, although common sorts are getting less inquired for; shipments have been going forward very freely, and we should say considerably more than half the crop has already been disposed of. In munjeet we are not aware of any transactions. Ginger continues in moderate request for Great Britain and America, but for neither are we aware of any extensive purchases. Turmeric is not at present wanted, but a few parcels have been taken for Great Britain at about Rs. 2 per md.

.COWRIES, TINCAL, AND CUTCH.-Under this head we have not a single sale to report since our last. Cowries are, however, in moderate demand for Great Britain, and in prices we have no alteration to notice.

COTTON. This staple continues to command but little attention, and shipments to China are to a very moderate extent, being from 1st inst. up to date only 561 mds.

OPIUM.-Prices commenced declining gradually shortly after the date of our last, in consequence of the discovery of forged passes, and it was thought the Government sale held on the 30th ultimo would have established a further fall, but, owing to its being the last of the season, this did not place, the ruling throughout being much the same as in the bazaar previously; annexed is a memorandum of the result

The stock now in the Company's godown consists of 6,976 chests Patna, and, 2,563 chests of Benares.

HIDES, HORNS, AND TIPS.-Hides continue in very moderate demand, but sales nevertheless are toja fair extent, principally for the English market, and prices are much the same as last month. In buffalo horns there is not much doing, but although they are rather difficult of sale, prices are maintained. In deer horns and tips we are not aware of a single transaction.

MADRAS. MISCELLANEOUS.

A fact has come to our knowledge which speaks so much for the humanity and daring of the gentleman referred to, that we with much pleasure place it on record. On Monday evening a seaman fell from the mizen topsail yard of H.M.S. For into the sea; Lieut. Warren, regardless of consequences to himself, immediately jumped overboard, and saved the man's life by keeping him afloat until assistance was rendered. The sailor, we are informed, had his collar-bone broken by the fall, but is now doing well.-Athenæum, June 12.

At the general meeting of proprietors, Dr. R. Sladen, of the Medical Board, was unanimously elected a director of the Bank of Madras, in the room of J. Minchin, Esq., resigned.

BERHAMPORE, June 5.-Since my last communication, two more cases of cholera have occurred at Aska among the men employed in the sugar-factory, both which proved fatal. I have not heard of any more cases for several days past, and it is to be hoped that this direful malady has disappeared. The poor bigoted natives have been committing dreadful slaughter among the sheep and goats, as an offering to appease their gods and god. desses.

Lieutenant Man, of the 49th regiment N. I., arrived here from Madras on the barque Indian Queen, for the purpose, I believe, of assuming the command of the detachment of sappers and miners from Captain Campbell, of the 50th regiment; the latter officer is to superintend the roads in the district.

It is currently rumoured that R. A. Bannerman, Esq., Collector of Ganjam, will shortly return and assume charge of his office.

We have had a thunderstorm and a few heavy showers of rain, which considerably cooled the atmosphere for a time, but since the 1st inst. the weather has again become very sultry and oppressive, with scarcely any wind day or night; for the last two or three days, the clouds have been lowering, and there is every appearance of rain, and all are anxiously looking out for a good fall, which would now be a great blessing.

Departure, R. Barclay, Esq. and family, to Calcutta. June 11.-The troops at this station, I am glad to say, continue healthy, and the same, I believe, is the case with the wing at Russellcondah. Cholera has entirely disappeared.

Colonel Hutton, who lately commanded the 22nd regiment N. I., presented Doctor Stevens, the medical officer of the corps, with a silver vase for professional attendance.

Arrival.-Mr. E. &. Lulham, engineer, for the sugar-works at Aska, from Calcutta.

BANGALORE.-The weather during the past week bas continued favourable, it is very mild and pleasant, with an occasional gust of rather violent wind. We have had two or three rather heavy showers during the nights, and all around looks green and fresh; however, the tanks (many of them at least) are very low, some from whence no irrigation is allowed are of course pretty full. The cultivators who sow their dry crops in June and July are anxiously looking out for rain, as without it the raggy or natcheny crops, on which nearly all the lower classes in Mysore chiefly live, will fail. There are several worthy folks complaining of colds and other trifling ailments, and not a few children suffering from sore eyes, quite enough to keep our garrison surgeon fully employed; in fact his office is no sinecure.

June 20.-Mrs. Powys, the lady of Capt. Powys, of the 4th regiment of N. I., died here on Saturday last, and was interred on Sunday evening.

Cholera, we regret to state, has not yet wholly disappeared at various quarters in Mysore a few cases have recently occurred. At the French Rocks, a subadar of the 14th regiment N. I., and several others, have recently fallen victims to it.

The delightfully cool weather seems to have inspired our fashionable folks, and it is to be hoped the season will continue favourable for festivities, such as took place last night at the public rooms-a ball and supper, or as it was styled, the first quadrille party of the season; between fifty and sixty gentlemen were present, and about half that number of ladies. The arrangements were all good, the music excellent, and every thing went off as merry as a marriage bell." June 27.-The officers of the 1st Fusileers gave a splendid
