entertainment (a ball and supper) at their mess-rooms on Wednesday evening last, to, we believe, the whole of the community of the station, at least nearly all were there who usually attend such parties. The attendance of ladies was very numerous, in fact the place was literally crowded, spacious and commodious as it is.

We have had cold westerly winds, and at times heavy showers of rain during the past week. The mornings and evenings are pleasant enough, as the high winds do not commence till nine or ten o'clock A.M., and they cease about sunset. However, during the day it is very disagreeable to be out of doors. are complaining of colds and slight fevers, sore eyes, &e. We regret to state that the gallant King's Hussars are suffering severely. There are at present upwards of a hundred of the poor fellows in hospital, suffering, we understand, severely from violent dysentery; no fatal cases have yet occurred, but several men we hear are seriously ill,

July 4.-We have had some heavy falls of rain during the past week, and the weather keeps very chilly and cold, with very dis agreeable winds at times, and on two or three mornings we had slight fogs, which are very unusual at this season; many individuals are complaining more or less. The sickness in the King's Hussars still continues, the number in hospital, however, is less by a score than were in it last week. There have, we regret to state, been four deaths during the past week in the hussar's hospital, all from dysentery, and the whole of them fine young men of about thirty years of age; several others are said to be seriously ill to-day.

JAULNAH, June 9.-A conflagration on a larger scale than usual occurred in the Suder Bazaar on Wednesday evening last, the 4th inst., at 8 o'clock, by which a vast number of houses have been destroyed, and a great quantity of ready-made chuppers and materials for their manufacture; the fire began in a tat yard full of dry hay and wood, which in such weather as this only required a spark to ignite. The superintendent of police, and all his peons, were on the spot almost immediately, but all their well-directed efforts to extinguish the flames were useless till much property was consumed. I hear from some that more than 250 houses were burned; and a poor boy about 10 years of age, the only son of his mother, and she a widow, was burnt to death; others were scorched and otherwise injured. Six months' extra batta was issued to the C troop, II. A. on Tuesday last, on account of their services in China.

The officers of the detachment who went on leave for a bit of shikar, two months ago, have returned to cantonment; and their spolia opima shew that they are top sawyers; the most successful amongst them has been Lieutenant H, of the cavalry, who killed no less than twelve tigers, and brought home two alive (young ones of course); this, you must admit, was great doings for one gun.

Cornet Fraser, of the 1st cavalry, died last evening at 9 o'clock, from, I believe, an affection of the brain, after a short illness of six days; he only complained at first of a headache, and did not appear to apprehend serious consequences; but it increased daily, aided no doubt, if not caused in the first instance, by the account of his father's death, which reached him by the last mail. This promising young officer only joined his regiment last September. He is much and sincerely regretted by his brother officers. The deceased was only about 18 years of age.

TRIPASSORE, June 10.-Capt. Henderson, the civil engineer of this division, arrived here last Sunday on special duty. The Rev. Mr. Whitford also came here yesterday, to point out to the engineer the necessary work to be done to the place of public worship, as it is much impaired. Nothing has been done for a considerable time by Government, ever since the sacred building was appropriated to the Queen's pensioners for this purpose. The bishop, on his circuit, visited this place in last October, and held a confirmation. The Rev. Mr. W. suggested to his lordship that the premises absolutely required to be repaired, and the matter was represented to Government by his lordship, after carefully reviewing the place of worship. Several months elapsed before an engineer maistry was sent from Arcot, to draw an estimate of the expense, which was forwarded to the heads of the department, and nothing was further heard about it until the arrival of Capt. Henderson was announced. Very desirous the pensioners are for Government to expedite the repairs of their church, and that the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge may favour the congregation with a missionary to perform divine service on every Sabbathday. The weather at present is very oppressive, the crops are perishing for want of rain, and the loss sustained by the cultivators is lamentable. Cholera is raging with violence about the neighbourhood; several cases have proved fatal.

CUTTACK.-E. T. Trevor, Esq., deputy collector, left this place for Balasore, to assume charge of the collectorate at that

station, in consequence of the death of F. J. Morris, Esq. Since my last, this station was visited by several heavy showers of rain, ushered in by smart gales from the W. and N. W., and accompanied with loud peals of thunder and vivid lightning; these, certainly, did much good, not only by cooling the atmosphere, but by filling the tanks and pools; withal, at the present moment it is grilling hot, so much so that it is quite impossible for one to exist without the aid of a punkah both day and night. Thermometer at 98°. PAULGHAUT, June 8. Some time ago a strong body of Moplays were discovered In the act of smuggling tobacco on the jungle-road between this and Trichoor. The property was seized, but it appears the contrabandists escaped; since which time they are reported to have taken post on a hill of difficult access at a short distance from the highway, whence they sally out to rob and levy contributions on all travellers; this course they are said to have given notice they mean to persist in until they are fully reimbursed for their tobacco, loss of time, profits, &c. I have not heard whether any measures have been taken to capture them, but the obstruction to trade, and the annoyance which peaceable travellers must suffer from such outlaws being at large and unchecked in their career of plunder, would seem to call for timely and effectual interference: the rajah to whom the district belongs is represented as a poor powerless Hindoo devotee, who cares for little so that he can get to one of the heathen heavens through the mystical influence of the crafty Brahmins and so while he is praying the unoffending public are paying-so so runs the world in those parts.

Mr. Gardner, for many years an inhabitant of this place, the son of a former government conservator, and himself a contractor for timber, died here, after a short illness, a few days since. His complaint was bereberi, a disease to which Europeans or their immediate descendants are scarcely ever known to be subject.

June 14-Harsh winds blow constantly and keep chapping round from S. E. to S. W. Thermometer 80 deg. in the shade

at noon.

July 1.-It has been raining here heavily and almost incessantly day and night since the 18th June, many of the showers resembled the prolonged discharge of a water-spout; the roads are nearly impassable, the channels are swollen to brooks, the whole valley is one great puddle, and from the quantity of moisture with which the atmosphere is charged, we are limited, like the Laplanders, to a continuous twilight.

VELLORE, June 10. The parties that were sent to examine the records of the Military Pay Office have removed their department into the Stipend Office, in consequence of one of the writers that were sent down from Madras having been detected in extorting bribes; he has been discharged, and turned out of Vellore, and another has been sent in lieu of him from Madras. In order to guard against this vice hereafter, they have set two peons as a watch, to prevent any private intercourse whatever with the Pay Office writers. It is said that the accounts for the last ten years are now undergoing a strict examination.

A small portion of the fort near the drawbridge has given way, and an estimate for the erection of it; amounting to 11,000 rupees, has been made; it is expected that Mr. Oliver, the assistant surveyor, who is an experienced hand, will be sent here for the purpose of superintending the work. No conveyance of any description whatever will be allowed to go in or out of the fort until the work is accomplished.

ARCOT, June 12.-Mr. Morenas, the proprietor of the ice depot, intends throwing up the business, having met with little or no encouragement; he therefore intends opening an ice depôt at Bangalore, for which he has sent in his prospectus to that place, and I hope that he may meet with the encouragement he deserves.

Cholera, I regret exceedingly to say, has made its appearance; a European of her Majesty's 57th regiment has fallen a victim to this dreadful scourge, also a trooper of the 6th cavalry.

The weather continues to be very hot and oppressive; we had a pretty smart shower last night, but unfortunately it did not last long, so as to moderate the heat.

June 18.-The left wing of her Majesty's 57th regiment marched out of barracks yesterday evening at half-past five o'clock, and encamped at Lallapett, about three miles hence, for change of air.

R. B. M. Binning, Esq., acting sub-collector of this station, has left for Madras, preparatory to proceeding to the Cape on sick certificate.

June 20. Although the wing of H.M.'s 57th regiment were ordered out of barracks, in the anticipation that change of air would rid them of the epidemic, I regret to say it is not the case, as five men were attacked by it in the camp, and the wing are in consequence to shift ground.

BELLARY, June 13.-Last night the officers of H. M.'s 63rd regiment gave a farewell dinner to Major-gen. Woulfe, commanding ceded districts, on the occasion of his leaving the division. The mess-house of the regiment was brilliantly illuminated, and the road leading to it was lighted up on both sides. On Sunday night, the 8th instant, a dreadful fire broke out in the lines of the 5th regiment N.I., which has done considerable damage; the bazaar attached to the lines was completely burned to the ground I can give you no account of how the fire first originated. On the evening of Monday, the 9th instant, we had a regular down-pour, which lasted from seven o'clock until eight the following morning, without ceasing; the ryots here are very much rejoiced at it, and say "Plenty of rice come now, Sir." The weather up to this date is cool, and every thing is going on well. The troops are, I am happy to inform you, healthy, both European and native. A report is current about the 3rd light cavalry proceeding to Bangalore from Belgaum.

GOVERNMENT GENERAL ORDERS.

REVISED INFANTRY BUGLE SOUNDS.

Fort St. George, 10th June, 1845.-No. 45.—A book of revised Infantry Bugle Sounds having been supplied to divisions, forces, brigades, and regiments of infantry, the Commander-in-chief directs that the system therein laid down be strictly observed in all corps of infantry.

INCREASE OF THE SALARIES OF CHAPLAINS,

Fort St. George, June 26, 1845.-The Most Noble the Governor in Council is pleased to notify, that the Honourable the Court of Directors have authorized the increase of the salaries of all chaplains who were appointed previously to the 31st August, 1836, to 700 rupees per mensem, from the date of the promotion of the first assistant chaplain to the rank of chaplain, which occurred on the 14th April last. Those chaplains who, in consequence of being located at stations where palankeen allowance is granted, have received more than 700 rupees per mensem, will continue to draw their existing allowances so long as they may be in charge of the chaplaincy, which originally obtained for them the higher rate.

COTTON.-In this article contracts to the extent of about 2,500 candies of Tinnivelly of the new crop have been made at 534 rupees per candy deliverable on the coast, and about 1,000 candies of the last year's importation have changed hands at prices varying from Rs. 51 to 53 per candy. In Western Cotton, purchases of what comes to market are being made at 37 to 38 per candy, but since the value has fallen to this rate, the quantity brought down from the interior has considerably diminished. The depressed state of the English and China markets tends to discourage shipments to any great extent at present.

INDIGO.-The sales in these have been chiefly in the middling quality to some extent at 27 to 29 rupees per candy. The market being bare of the finer description, we have in consequence no report of any sales to note.

PIECE GOODS, COTTON.-The demand for Punjums and Blue Cloth is still in a limited scale, and chiefly for the Eastern market, at our quotations.

SUNDRIES.-The following comprise the sales of the Imports from the coast, viz. :— Boot Gram
