road as the Sudder Board office; and thus the rain-gauge of the Surveyor General's office, which is fixed there, did not indicate the quantity which fell. At the Mauritius, this phenomenon is said not to be uncommon, of rain without cloud. We learn from our informant, that some natives, one, a man who had been many years at Lucknow, and, another who has lived at almost every station between Calcutta and Delbi, states that this is not uncommon, and that it happens every year, once or twice! We should be obliged by any of our readers informing us of any well ascer tained instances of rain without cloud, either formerly or that may happen in future. Much attention is, at last, being paid to meteorological phenomena at home, and the peculiar ones which form the outstanding" and "residual" instances, are calculated to throw light on such researches.-Englishman, Aug. 8. Some weeks ago we noticed a case of aggravated assault on two respectable European gentlemen, Messrs. Wallace and Phipps, in charge of indigo factories, in the neighbourhood of Mongbyr. They were set upon by a mob of hired laterals, and most severely beaten. The authorities, with Mr. Dampier at their head, took active steps to bring the offenders to justice; and we have just learnt from a correspondent, that a number of the delinquents have been convicted, after a careful investigation by Mr. Gouldsbury, the sessions judge of the district, and that twenty-one of them have been sentenced to hard labour in irons for seven, and ten of them for five years.--Hurkaru, Aug. 9. We understand that the Eliza Warwick has brought about 500 tons of ice, with sundry barrels of apples, and similar creaturé-comforts. We hear, too, that there is a small batch of horses on board. This is the first importation, we apprehend, of this description of live stock from America.-Ibid. FEROZEFORE.We regret much to learn that up to the 26th of July no rain had fallen at Ferozepore, and that the heat was consequently oppressively great. Cholera too had evinced symptoms of a return. A change of weather is looked upon as the sole panacea for the afflictions with which the frontier cantonment has unfortunately been visited this year.-Delhi Gazette, Aug. 2. } 、, * g» i!;རྩ་རྨཱ DELHI.-The weather continues favourable, more rain having fallen. The Delhi Gazette, "by the same process which gave consistency to the various rumours abroad, regarding the visit of the Governor general," has arrived at the conclusion that the numerous regiments now on or near the frontier, will shortly be formed into a corps d'armée for carrying into effect arrangements.completed between the British Government and that of Lahore. He instances as "a sign of the times," that H, M's 31st regt, has been ordered to stand fast at Umballah, and that the order was accompanied by a hint that there was no chance of the regiment quitting the Upper Provinces, for the next year at least. Hur karu, Aug. 9, 1 1 Avery serious disturbance occurred in Lahore on the 24th July, unattended, however, with bloodshed, caused by the two battalions of Bishen Singh, who took and kept possession of one of the gates of the fort till sunset."Hurkaru, Arg. 9. Among the on dits of the day is, that Mr. H. V. Bayley will fill the office of private secretary to Sir Herbert Maddock, on the latter's taking the seat of President in Council, and Governor of Bengal; and that Capt. Lang 36th N.I. will be his honour's military secretary, and St. George Oakes, aide-de camp. We have heard Capt. Spottiswoode's (9th Lancers) name mentioned in connexion with the former office; but we remarked, in Saturday's orders, the abovementioned officers placed at the disposal of the government of Bengal, and therefore consider them the favorites.-Hukaru, Aug. 9. ACCIDENT ON THE RIVER.-Last Saturday niglit, Mr. Sageman and Mr. William Greaves, Superintendent of the Government Stationary office, escorted a lady across the river to Howrall, and were returning home a little after midnight, when the boat they were in went against a buoy off the Suikeah Ghaut, and, owing to the strong and rapid current at ebb tide, upset. Mr. Sageman had a most providential escape, having swam, in full dress, so far down as the opposite side of Chandpaul Ghaut, when he was picked up by some people in a dingy.- Englishman, Aug. 1. Malta, August 7, 1845. Another shock of an earthquake was felt at this station last night, at ten minutes past eleven o'clock by my watch. It was of longer duration than either of the other two, and the motion was tremulous. The weather stormy, and the river continues to rise. THE H. C. S. "AMHERST."-This vessel sold yester. native gentle day, by Messrs, Mackenzie, Lyall, and Co., to an We understand that Mr. Nelson, the survivor in the late duel, has voluntarily surrendered himself. Depositions were taken before Mr. Mytton yesterday, and the grand jury have been adjourned until Friday, when bills will be presented against Messrs. Nelson, Blunt, and Fenwick. We are very sorry to learn, from a private correspondent at that the cholera is raging there, and that the regi as mente are losing six or seven mén daily. The disease ras We commend to the attention of those who have friends in Scinde, the following notice by the post-master-general N. W. P., from which they will see that an opportunity is offered for despatching, parcels to that distant and, from this side of India, not easily accessible, province :· "NOTICE. The families and friends of parties in Scinde, arc informed that Banghy parcels will be sent free of any charge, as far as the river passage is concerned, from Loodiana and Ferozepore post offices to Sukkur, by the steamer Napier, now coming up from Scinde on an experimental trip. Due notice will be given of the probable date on which the Napier will leave Loodiana." "All parcels for the steamer must be clearly directed to the care of the post-master of Loodiana (or Ferozepore) to be forwarded by steamer.' "The Banghy hire to Loodiana or Ferozepore must be prepaid. H. B. RIDDELL, Post-master-general N. W. P. July 29th, 1845." || 1 Delhi Gazetle, August 2. Late yesterday afternoon, we received the following Delhi Gazette Extra : 4 1 kylet od Delhi, Sunday, the 3rd August, 1845.'1 "We hasten to communicate the following important information from Ferozepore : "The officer cominanding that station, having received information, on the morning of the 29th July, that a body of armed Sikhs, amounting to 500 cavalry, with some infantry, had been sent from Lahore, to obtain forcible possession of some villages from farmers who had provided the Ferozepore cattle with grass from their lands, ordered out two ressalas of the 3rd irregular cavalry, to Koonda Ghat, opposite Ferozepore, to intercept their crossing. Not a blade of grass was allowed to be cut on the morning of the 29th. The Napier is said to have reached Ferozepore, as also a cargo of goods from Bombay. Instructions had reached Ferozepore to read the general order never known to have been so severe in its attacks at this station before.-Ibid, August 14. AGRA. We have had very heavy rain since our last. The river is greatly swollen, and the road which runs parallel to it, is flooded. We hear that some fatal accidents have occurred during the very severe thunder and lightning storms, which havelately visited us. The quantity of rain fallen since the com mencement of the monsoon is nearly twenty-two inches.-Agra Ukhbar, August 2. The rains here have been very heavy this season. The Jumna has risen unprecedentedly high, so that parts of the strand are under water, and the portion of it under the fort is impassable. Several old houses in the city have fallen in, and in the Nyeke-Mundee, two or three lives have been lost by the fall of houses. To prevent further similar accidents, we hear that the magistrate has ordered all dilapidated walls to be pulled down. We regret to learn that the steamer had not reached Ghurmukteser Ghat on the afternoon of the 3rd instant; a large detachment of the Meerut police battalion are reported to have been there since the 20th July, with 25 or 30 men of the cavalry, in charge of one lakh of rupees of old coin, to be embarked on the steamer for Calcutta. They are to escort the ten lakhs she has on board to Meerut.-Delhi Gazette, Aug. 6. The roads in the interior of the district are described as im passable, owing to the overflowing of the Nuddees, &c., near them. The road between Agra and Futtehpore is quite under water, in consequence of the bunds in the Bhurtpore territory having given way. The Orul or Kharee Nuddee, which runs under the town of Iradutnugur, has risen too high to be forded, as, indeed, is the case with the Nuddees in this neighbourhood generally. We shall, doubtless, hear of similar obstructions on other lines of communication with the marts of the district. A beautiful full-length portrait of the Hon. Mr. T. C. Robertson, late lieutenant-governor of these provinces, has reached Agra, to be hung up in the Metcalfe testimonial. It is the one subscribed for by his friends and admirers at Agra, who also contributed to the establishment of a scholarship, in honour of him, at the. Agra College. The painting is in oil, and was taken by an eminent Italian artist at Rome... The likeness is considered excellent, and the execution is admirable. Mr. R. is represented in a standing posture, with a book in one hand. The picture is (in a splendid gilt massive frame, made in England,~ JESSORE, AUG. 9.-We had a very severe earthquake here on the night of the 6th, which alarmed the inmates of my house exceedingly. Its approach was indicated by a noise from the eastward, resembling very much the distant rumbling sound of carriage-wheels in Calcutta, and a sudding lulling of the wind, which had previously blown strong. The shock itself was exceedingly violent, and rocked the house about as if bent on its destruction. It lasted, in all, about thirty seconds, as nearly as I could guess. This is the fourth or fifth visitation of the kind that has been experienced in this quarter within the last fortnight or three weeks. RUNGPORE.-We had smart shocks of an earthquake on the night of the 23rd and the morning of the 26th July. Again, on the 6th of August, at twenty minutes past eleven P.M., a very severe shock was experienced. A smart puff of wind followed a dead calm; this, in half a minute, was succeeded by a shock that set the chairs in motion, and made my old It bungalow creak like a ship rolling in the trough of the sea, appeared to move from N. W. to S. E. Indigo prospects any thing but good; still Rungpore will far exceed last year's out turn. CIVIL: APPOINTMENTS, &C. BEST, W. qual. for pub. serv. attach to coll of Ft.: William, Aug. 13.
