αὐτῇ εἰρηκότων· ὅθεν εἰσέτι νῦν ἀπὸ τόδε Χριςιανών ἐκ ἐπέλιπε τὸ φῦλον. τοίνυν καὶ ἢ ἱςορικὸν μαρτυρείν, 3 μόνον τῆς δώδεκα αποςόλους, ἐδὲ τὰς ἑβδομήκοντα μας θητὰς ἐξωκειωμέν@, ἀλλὰ πολλοὺς μὴὺ τὸ Ιεδαϊκό, πολλὲς ἢ το Ελληνικό προσαγόμα, δῆλο ἂν εἴη πειτε τόν τι κεκτημλύο d της λοιπες ανθρώπες. Πῶς ἂν ἄλλως προσήγετο το 18δαϊκό και το Ελληνικό πλείες, εἰ μή τισι θαυμαςοῖς ή παραδόξοις έργοις, κ ξηνιζέση κέχρητο διδασκαλία; μαρίνβει ἢ καὶ ἡ 7 πράξεων αποςόλων γραφὴ, ὅτι πολλαὶ μυριάδες ἦσαν Ιεδαίων ανὁρῶν πεπεισμβρίων αὐτὸν εἶ και 7 Χριςόν τ8 Θε8, Η υπό προφητῶν κατηγγελμλύον.

loved him at firft did not forfake him: for he appear'd to them alive again the third Day, as the divine Prophets had spoken of thefe, and a vaft Number of other wonderful Things concerning him. Whence *e Tribe of Chriftians, fo amed from him, are not extinct at this Day. If therefore we have this Hiftorian's Teftimony, that he not only brought over to himself the Twelve Apoftles, with the Seventy Difciples, but many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles allo. He muft' manifefly have had fomewhat in him extraordinary, above the reft of Man kind.

For how otherwise could he draw over fo many of the Jews, and of the Gentiles, unlefs he perform'd ad

mirable and amazing Works, and used a Method of Teaching that was not common? Moreover, the Scripture of the Acts of the Apostles bears witness, that there were many Myriads of Jews who were perfuaded that he was the Chrift of God, who was foretold by the Prophets. [As xxi. 20.]

Now the divine Scripture of the Gofpels makes mention of John the Baptif, as having his Head cut of by the younger Herod. 7ofephus allo concurs in this Hiftory, and makes mention of Herodias by Name, as the Wife of his Brother, whom

Herod had married, upon divorcing his former lawful Wife. She was the Daughter of Aretas, King of the Herodias he had parted from Petrean Arabians; and which her Hufband while he was alive. On whose Account alfo, when he had flain John, he made War with Aretas [f. Aretas made War with him] becaufe his Daughter had been ufed difhonourably. In which War, when it came Herod's Army was deftroy'd; to a Battle, he fays, that all and that he fuffer'd this be caufe of his wicked Contrivance againft John. Moreover the fame Jofephus, by acknowledging John to have been a moft righteous Man, his Tefimony with what is and the Baptift, confpires in written in the Gofpels. He allo relates, that Herod loft his Kingdom for the Sake of the fame Herodias; together with whom he was himfelf condemned to be banim'd to Vienna, a City of Gall. And this is his Account in the XVIII Book of Antiqui
