This then is the meffage which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6. (1) By the Union here, and the Anointing, Ver. 27. is meant the Holy Spirit, whofe Gifts and Graces are diffufed throughout the whole Church, and to every living Member thereof. For his Affiftances are equally neceffary to all, to the Learned, as well as to the Unlearned, to the Teachers, as well as to the Hearers. He it is that enlightens our Minds, and purifies our Hearts, and inclines our Wills, not only beginning, but carrying on, and perfecting a new and fpiritual Life in our Souls. This Expreffion, re know all things, is not to be understood in the largest Senfe, but to be limited to thofe things which are neceffary to Salvation. Thefe every true Chriftian not only knows Speculatively, that is, he has not only a Notion of them in his Mind, but he has an experimental Knowledge and Taffe of them, which is productive of an holy Obedience. This ineftimable Gift was the Purchase of the Sufferings and Death of Chrift, who is here ftyled the holy One. Thofe Words, re need not that any Man teach you, cannot be intended to fet afide all outward Teaching; but the Meaning is, you do not need the Teaching of any of those Antichrifts and falfe Teachers fpoken of in this Chapter, and other Places of this Epiftle. The Miftake of thofe, who, from this Place, fuffer themselves to be prevailed with to forfake the Publick Affemblies of Chriftians, and the outward Ufe of the Means of Grace, the Miniftry of the Word and Sacraments, is a manifeft Proof of the great Artifice and fubtilty of the Devil, who, in order to deceive and deftroy our Souls, puts on the beft Appearances, even that of an Angel of Light. Were there no need of outward Teaching, why are Paftors and Teachers mentioned? Why did St. John write this Epiftle, or why were the other Scriptures committed to writing? We muft not therefore oppose the external Miniftry of the Word to the inward Teachings of the Spirit, but look upon them as fubordinate one to another, both being conducive to our Salvatien. If in the Times of the Apoftles there was outward and publick Teaching, when the Spirit was in fuch a plentiful manner poured forth, how much greater need is there of publick Teaching among us now,
