NEW YORK COLONIAL HISTORY

PREFACE

This bibliography covers the history of New Netherland, or New York as colony and province, from its discovery to 1776. Though New York's

sway extended at times over lands now included in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maine, the list includes only the territory within the present limits of the state.

The first settlement in New Jersey was made in 1623 by the Dutch ; the first permanent settlement in 1664, when New Jersey was granted by the duke of York to Berkeley and Carteret. In 1702 the provinces of East and West Jersey were united and surrendered to Queen Anne, and from 1703 to 1738 New York and New Jersey were under the same governors. Pennsylvania was settled by the Swedes in 1643, the Dutch settlement of 1623 having been abandoned. In 1655 the Dutch under Stuyvesant took possession of both Pennsylvania and Delaware, and they were claimed by the governors of New York till 1682, when Penn obtained a quit claim from the duke of York. That part of Maine known first as Pemaquid and its dependencies, and in 1683 organized as the county of Cornwall, was under the governors of New York from 1673 to 1686, when it was annexed to New England. For relations with other colonies, their histories and colonial records should be consulted.

Southold, Southampton, Easthampton and other towns in eastern Long Island formed part of Connecticut previous 10 1664. For their history during that period the student is referred to the histories and colonial records of the Connecticut and New Haven colonies.
