An Essay on DancingNelson & Phillips, 1849 - 132 sidor This book is a typical example of mid-nineteenth-century anti-dance literature. Crane takes the position that the ancients, including the Greeks and Egyptians, danced only for religious purposes. The author additionally notes that dancing in the Bible was done by "maidens and women alone." Also typical of this type of literature, the author decries the religious ceremonies of the "savage and the semi-civilized" world of non-Christians, especially the customs of non-Europeans. Crane concludes that balls have a bad effect on health and are a waste of time. |

Sida 112 - For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth ; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
Sida 30 - They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance. They take the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the organ. They spend their days in wealth, And in a moment go down to the grave.
