Sunday Evening's Prayer.

Deliver us from evil, for THINE are the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever.'

GRACIOUS and merciful FATHER,1 we have asked

many things of THEE this day and through the past week; but THOU art able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,2 delivering us from all evil,3 and giving us all good, for THOU art rich in mercy:5

6

We have often thought of THY loving kindness, till we have so delighted ourselves in THEE that the day has seemed to us as one of the days of Heaven upon earth. But even then the half hath not been told us, for eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which THOU hast prepared for those who love THEE.10

Oh, that we may be grateful to THEE for the exceeding riches of THY grace in THY kindness toward us through JESUS CHRIST; 11 and bless THEE,12 and serve THEE with joyfulness, and with gladness

of heart, for the abundance of all things;13 for the blessings of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.14 Bless THE LORD, O our souls, and forget not all HIS benefits !15 O loving GOD, keep these for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of THY people to prepare their heart unto THEE.16 Happy are the people that are in such a case; yea, happy are the people whose GOD is THE LORD.17

But even in the midst of our happiness, trials and afflictions await us.18 And this dispensation of sorrow THOU designest for our profit, that we may be partakers of THY holiness.19 If therefore, for a season, we must needs be in heaviness through manifold temptations;20 help us to remember that though no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruits of righteousness unto those who are exercised thereby; 'Wherefore,' THOU dost say, 'lift up the hands which hang down!' 21

We would lift up our hands, gracious GOD; and our hearts as well as our hands, to THEE in the Heavens.22 For hast THOU not said, that if we prepare our hearts, and stretch forth our hands unto

THEE, we shall forget our misery, or remember it only as the floods of great waters that pass away, 23 and leave a rich blessing behind ?24

Upon our hearts this day THY doctrine has dropped as the rain, and THY words have distilled as the dew.25 Oh, grant that THY truth may ever be to us as the light of the morning when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; and as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.26

The day is now far spent ; 27 and darkness covereth the earth.28 We ask of THEE that we may lie down in peace, and sleep; for THOU, LORD, only makest us dwell in safety.29 Soon we shall have to sleep the sleep of death.30 If the time of our departure is at hand,31 and this night our souls should be required of us, 32 and we should be awakened out of sleep 33 by the voice of the archangel,34 saying ;—‘Arise ye! and depart; for this is not your rest;' may we be able calmly and joyfully to say;-'We have waited for THY salvation, O LORD!'36 and enter into the rest that shall never be broken; 37- the rest that remaineth for the people of GOD, 38 the sabbath of Heaven. Hear us, O FATHER, for THY dear SON's sake. Amen.

35

Now, unto THE KING ETERNAL, IMMORTAL, AND INVISIBLE, THE ONLY WISE GOD, be honour and glory for ever and ever.39 For THINE, O LORD, are the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the Heaven and in the earth is THINE. THINE is the kingdom, O LORD, and THOU art exalted as head above all.40 Our FATHER who art in Heaven, &c.
