His trumpet sounds, and bids the dead awake;-
They hear the summons, and of life partake :-
Immortal made, they're called to appear,
And be arraign'd before His righteous bar,
In sublime state to see Messiah reign
To judge the world, to fix th' eternal doom
Of ev'ry mortal.-Judg'd we all must be,
By Him with truth, and strictest equity.
Now, man, thou wilt a righteous God behold,*
In awful grandeur come to judge the world:
In all the splendour of celestial state

He shall appear; and thou thy Judge must meet,
Before His presence stand, and see the flame,
Which quickly will His enemies consume!
The earth He calls, and all the hosts of heav'n
As witnesses impartial judgment's given;
And thus expostulates, "I've spoke to all;
"Has not the world heard My most gracious call?
"From south to north was not My gospel spread,
"From east to west My courteous summons heard?
"In Zion first the radiant glory burst,

“Thence spread the flame to the remotest coast. "O Israel hear!-I first against thee speak : "At thy burnt offerings I no umbrage take, "Whilst instituted as the solemn type, "Of the great sacrifice which I should make "But that completely finish'd, no more then 66 Might blood be shed to cleanse mankind from sin;

;

* See Psalm 50.

"No longer wanted fatling of thine house, "Nor he-goat of thy fold for sacrifice;

"The beasts that range the shady woods are Mine,

"So are the cattle in green pastures seon;
"Each winged fowl that skims the bending air
"Too are My own, to all My title's clear
"As My created; ev'ry kind I made,

"And gave them sustenance frail life to feed.
"When the whole world and all its stores were Mine,

"I needed not ask thee for things not thine.
"These were the offerings I desir'd to see
"From thee, a sinner, offer'd unto Me,
"To be repentant, humbly to obey,
"With penitence thy adoration pay,

66

Thy faith upon my promises repose,

"In love ask help and comfort for thy woes;
"Then to thy prayers had lent a gracious ear,
"And of My mercy thou shouldst surely share.
"Draw near, My faithful from all distant lands,
"With you My cov'nant firm and lasting stands;
"With you 'tis seal'd and fully ratifi'd,
"By the atonement I, myself, have made :

By that My servants shall salvation see,

Who, as ordain'd, have truly honor'd Me "Since first created light began to shine, "From the first day until the end of time. "To none obedient I exception make, "But all shall come and of My joy partake;

"They are My blessed, purchas'd with My blood, "And their fidelity I will reward

"With crowns of glory; heaven's their resting place

Thus to the wicked speaks the righteous God,
"Unaw'd by Me you fearlessly have trod
"Upon My precepts and My just commands;
"But let me tell you, all your impious crimes
"Are known; your cunning could not hide
"From Me one fault, of word, or thought, or deed.
"Your profane lips, pretended to implore

"My mercy, whilst, in heart, you did adore
"Your vicious lusts; for these were your delight

“When you presumed serving me aright;

"The heavenly precepts which through love I taught, "Were all regarded as not worth a thought. "Did e'er the thief his application make,

"That you would in his wicked crimes partake,

"And was deni'd? or did you e'er refuse,

"To give your aid to his marauding views ?

Or the licentious, vile adult'rer see

"A partner lost when he appli'd to you ? "Well trained too in the dissembler's art, "To hide the malice of a wicked heart,

"With calumny most impious, false, and foul,
"You struck to wound your brother's heart and soul;

"And of your tongues on scandal thus full bent,
"Pride, envy, malice, gain, were the intent.
"Because I have my anger long suppress'd,
"In silence kept it smother'd in my breast,

"You thought me altogether such a one

" As you; now, must I tell you, you are wrong;"I hate your ways, and punishment shall give, "For your contempt of My grace and My love."

My song, again resume the joyful strain, Repeat, declare, the great Messiah's fame! My heart, conceive the grand stupendous thought! The pleasing theme My willing tongue narrate !* My pen endite, and with a faithful hand, Join and obey His high inspir'd command! Thou, Lord, enrob'd in Majesty divine, O'er earthly kings omnipotent dost reign :† From everlasting Thy imperial throne,

In boundless power, is 'stablish'd strong and firm
Eternal shall Thy righteousness endure,

Be 'tach'd to Thee the blessing evermore.
With Thee on mercy's most resplendent ray,
Truth flies to open everlasting day;

In strict alliance, not to fail nor cease,‡

Join her companions righteousness and peace.
Lord! to Thy faithful shall salvation come,
Celestial glory on the earth be seen.

See Psalm 45.

Thy testimony truth shall lasting fix,
And to Thy kingdom holiness annex.

How grace full flowing from Thy lips I hear,
"Tis Thou Thy Father's councils makest clear!
Girt on the sword upon Thy splendid thigh,
Assume Thou might, most Glorious Majesty !
Thy throne, Great Prince, is fix'd, is firmly set,
Thy sceptre'd sway is equity and right :
Thou lov'st the righteous, wicked hat'st to see,
So Lord o'er all Thy God anointeth Thee:
Peace, Mercy, truth, and love, Thy kingdom fill,
Though high in station, yet dost meekly rule.
Thy glorious* daughter, lovely, free of stain,
Espous'd by Thee eternal reigneth queen;
And at Thy right hand, rob'd in virgin gold,
Majestic stands true wisdom to unfold.
Whilst she in purity shall brilliant shine,
In faith and works, unerringly divine,
Accompanying virgins,† pure, unstained, free,
Chaste to Thy presence ushered shall be;
And duteous children, faithful, constant, firm,
Through ev'ry clime their parents' cause maintain :
Through generations they extol Thy fame,

Far spread, high honor, Thy exalted name:
Believing nations listen to their call,

Till Thy bless'd rule earth's spacious mansions fill.
