Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

General Confession (see Monday Morning, p. 408).

[ocr errors]

Or this.

ALMIGHTY God, we desire to humble ourselves before Thee this morning. We acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time have committed in thought, word, or deed. Enable us to lay aside every weight, and the sin that doth most easily beset us, and to run with patience the race that is set before us. Make us to feel our sinfulness and our need of a Saviour, through Whom we may receive health and salvation. Give us faith to believe on Him to the saving of our souls. Amen.

H

Thanksgiving.

EAVENLY Father, we thank Thee for all Thy good. ness to us and to all mankind. We thank Thee for temporal blessings. We thank Thee for having spared us to see the light of another day, for the measure of health and peace and comfort we are permitted to enjoy. Continue these blessings, though we so little deserve them. More especially we thank Thee for spiritual blessings, for the privilege of prayer, for Thy blessed Word and Sacraments, and for all the ordinances of Thy Church. Fill our hearts with gratitude for these and all Thy other mercies, and may we show our gratitude with our lips and in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Here may be introduced the Collect for the Day, and Special Prayers.)

For Grace and Protection.

ALMIGHTY Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to direct, sanctify, and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of Thy laws and in the works of Thy commandments, that through Thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Intercession.

LOOK, O Lord, in mercy upon the world around us,

and upon Thy Church in the world. Have compassion upon those who are living in ignorance of Thee. Cause the light of Thy Gospel to shine on them, make Thy way known upon earth, Thy saving health unto all nations. Bless our country, preserve our Queen, and all in authority. Grant to all whom Thou hast called to any office or administration in this land to lead godly and Christian lives. Make us a happy and contented people, fearing and loving Thee. Amen.

The Collects.

The first Sunday in Advent.

LMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away

upon

of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which Thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious Majesty to judge both the quick and dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through Him Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen. This Collect is to be repeated every day, with the other Collects in Advent, until Christmas Eve.

B

The second Sunday in Advent.

LESSED Lord, Who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of Thy holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which Thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The third Sunday in Advent.

LORD Jesu Christ, Who at Thy first coming didst send Thy messenger to prepare Thy way before Thee; Grant that the ministers and stewards of Thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready Thy way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at Thy second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in Thy sight, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The fourth Sunday in Advent.

LORD, raise up (we pray Thee) Thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set be fore us, Thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through the satisfaction of Thy Son our Lord, to Whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Christmas-Day.

LMIGHTY God, Who hast given us Thy only begotten time to be born of a pure virgin; Grant that we being regenerate, and made Thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by Thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Saint Stephen's Day.

RANT, O Lord, that, in all our sufferings here upon earth for the testimony of Thy truth, we may stedfastly look up to heaven, and by faith behold the glory that shall be revealed; and, being filled with the Holy Ghost, may learn to love and bless our persecutors by the example of Thy first Martyr Saint Stephen, who prayed for his murderers to Thee, O blessed Jesus, Who standest at the right hand of God to succour all those that suffer for Thee, our only Mediator and Advocate.

Amen.

Saint John the Evangelist's Day. MERCIFUL Lord, we beseech Thee to cast Thy bright

beams of light upon Thy Church, that it being enlightened by the doctrine of Thy blessed Apostle and Evangelist Saint John may so walk in the light of Thy truth, that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Ennocents' Day.

ALMIGHTY God, Who out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast ordained strength, and madest infants to glorify Thee by their deaths; Mortify and kill all vices in us, and so strengthen us by Thy grace, that by the innocency of our lives, and constancy of our faith even unto death, we may glorify Thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Circumcision of Christ.

LMIGHTY God, Who madest Thy blessed Son to be for man; Grant

to

us the true Circumcision of the Spirit, that, our hearts, and all our members, being mortified from all worldly and carnal lusts, we may in all things obey Thy blessed Will; through the same Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The same Collect shall serve for every day after unto the Epiphany.

The Epiphany,

OR

The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.

GOD, Who by the leading of a star didst manifest Thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; Mercifully grant, that we, which know Thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of Thy glorious Godhead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The first Sunday after the Epiphany.

LORD, we beseech Thee mercifully to receive the prayers of Thy people which call upon Thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
