PREFACE.

SELDEN was one of the most learned men of a very learned age, and he acted a conspicuous part at a highly eventful period of British history. His researches were chiefly directed to subjects of a difficult and abstruse nature; and to every investigation he applied a robust intellect, furnished with prodigious stores of erudition. His various works on jurisprudence, and on Jewish and English antiquities, have supplied the most ample materials to all subsequent enquirers: many of these have excelled him in the graces of elocution, for his English as well as his Latin
