The Well-Spent Day.

F we sit down at set of sun,

IT

And count the things we have done, And counting find

One self-denying act, one word,

That caused the heart of him who heard,

One glance most kind,

That fell like sunshine where it went,
Then we can count the day well spent.

But if through all the livelong day
We've eased no heart by yea or nay,
If through it all

We've nothing done that we can trace:
That brought the sunshine to a face;
No act most small

That helped some soul and nothing cost,
Then count that day as lost.

ACCORDING to the laws that rule the spiritual world the attraction of one soul is needed to elevate another. This attraction we call love; in the language of philosophy it is called friendship; in that of Christianity it is called charity. -FREDERIC OZANAM.

YEAR not!"' said the angel when Jesus was born,

"I bring you glad tidings of joy unto all." Fear not! He re-echoed when weary, forlorn,

The heart struggles on beneath suffering's pall.

The tidings of joy unto all must prove true, Who worship the Saviour in spirit and truth, Then banish your fear, and your courage renew,

And hope with the hope of perennial youth.

For youth sees the brightness, the glory of life
That 'round us is thrown. Let our ardor
arise

And eagerly struggle, though hard be the strife,
Undaunted contending to win the fair prize.

The "Glory to God in the highest' our song Shall evermore be. While our hearts bravely sing,

May every act of our lives e'er prolong

Unbroken the praises of Jesus our King.

And "Peace upon earth" then our portion shall be,

Proclaimed by the Angels o'er Bethlehem's
hill.

O Mary, our efforts please strengthen and we
The treasure shall win of the men of good

will.

REV. T. JONES, C. SS. R.

Divine Jesus! at the hour of my death I beseech of You to say to Your Eternal Father, "Father forgive him;" to Your Blessed Mother,

"Behold thy child;" to my poor soul, "This

day shalt thou be with me in Paradise."

Prayer.

ELIEVE me, my dear friends, believe an experience ripened by thirty years in the ministry. I do affirm that all deceptions, all spiritual deficiencies, all miseries, all falls, all faults, and even the most serious wanderings out of the right path, proceed from this single source -a want of constancy in prayer.

Live the life of prayer, learn to bring everything, to change everything into prayer—pains and trials and temptations of all kinds.

Pray in the calm and in the storm.

Pray on awakening, and pray during the daytime.

Coming and going pray.

"Teach us, Oh Lord, to pray.'

[ocr errors]

But I cannot pray, you answer.

This is

Beg

heresy. Yes, you can always pray. If you feel
a disgust, nay a horror for prayer, pray on, pray
in spite of yourself, pray against yourself.
for the courage in prayer that our agonizing Sav-
iour merited for you by His pangs in Gethsemane,
and upon Calvary. Pray, for prayer is the
strength that saves, the courage which preserves,
the mystic bridge cast over the abyss, which
joins the soul to God.

Holy Mass.

HERE is nothing of so much worth as

Holy Mass. Jesus Christ is there for you; the priest is your representative. Our Lord desired to be remembered; it was for this He bade His priests to offer up continually the Holy Sacrifice. At Holy Mass Jesus delivers Himself up for you to do with Him as you will.

leave with God to-morrow's when and how, And do concern myself with but the now; That little word, though half the future's length Well used, holds twice its meaning and its strength.

Like one blindfolded groping out his way,
I will not try to reach beyond to-day;
Since all the future is concealed from sight,

I need but strive to make the next step right.
That done, the next! and so on till I find,
Perchance, some day I am no longer blind,
And looking up, behold a radiant Friend

Who says "Rest now, for you have reached the end."
