Let us not miss the meaning of Christianity as it comes to us and claims us. We are chosen, we are called, not to die and be saved, but to live and save others.

THE MIST AND THE GULF

DOUBT is the mist that rises between man's

spiritual vision and the eternal truth. Sin is the gulf that separates man's moral character from the divine ideal. The mists gather, and thicken, and melt, and disperse. The gulf is always there. Ages of doubt come and go, in a world of sin. The pain of doubt is an evidence that man was made for faith. The shame of sin is an evidence that man was created for goodness.

A gospel for humanity must be good news both for doubters and for sinners. The depth of its sympathy will always be the measure of its power. It must not condemn doubt as if it were a sin: neither must it deny sin as if it were merely an illusion of doubt. To doubting men and to sinful men it must speak the message of a divine love,-a revealing love that pierces the mist with rays of light and brings clearness and joy to the confused and darkened spirit,—a redeeming love that bridges the
