in your hearts and souls before him, among his people, and at other times; carefully following those things in the course of your life, that may make for your peace with him, according to the teachings of his grace, and instructions of his Holy Spirit; by which the Lord hath measureably given you a knowledge of himself, his will, mind, way and Truth; and what he would have you to do, and how to walk before him, and all people. Oh! therefore that accordingly you may fear him, love and obey him with all your hearts; so you will be kept humble and low, which is safe and good for all so to be kept, but more especially for youth, because according to their natural inclinations, they are too often aspiring; that is, climbing up, and getting high.

But the Truth, the power of God, which is his love to the sons and daughters of men, in and through Jesus Christ manifested, being kept to and lived in, humbles the heart and mind, brings and keeps down the wild nature, to where safety is from many hurtful things.

Let not my counsel herein depart from you, nor slip out of your minds in forgetfulness, my dear children; so will you be a blessing and comfort to me and most especially to yourselves; and have cause to praise the Lord therefore, who is worthy for ever. Amen!

By these, you with Friends may know, that I with my companion J. L. are well, praises be

given to him who lives for ever! we have travelled the South and West of this nation to this place, a second time; and intend, if the Lord will, to go towards the North the next second day. And, if I find myself clear, when I have gone through the North, I may turn homeward; which if so, will be some time in the Eighth month; but that is more than I yet clearly see, and so must leave it at present.

The work is great in this nation, and the labourers are but few; yet the Lord hath here a blessed zealous people for his name and truth, filled with love to his servants, largely manifested to us in accompanying of us from one meeting and place to another, from ten to twenty and above in company at one time, the length of twenty five miles, though in the time of harvest (mind that ;) and three travelled from this city above one hundred miles with us, viz. Amos Strettell, Samuel Baker, and Joseph Hankes, considerable dealers in outward affairs; and two also intend to travel with us from this city into the North, viz. Abel Strettell and Peter Fletcher. This I write, as an example for others to take notice of, which in love I leave to their consideration, who may hear of this or see these lines.

So the Lord keep and preserve you my dear children, in love to him, his truth and people, and one to the other; keep to meetings what in

you lies, condescending one to another therein. So in the arms of love I most tenderly salute and embrace you, and bid you farewell, and desire you to remember my love to all friends, as though named; and to my relations and neighbours.

'Your loving father,

'JOHN BANKS.'

Dublin, the 18th of the

Sixth month, 1694.

And after I saw it my way, place and service, more particularly to settle in Somersetshire, which was in the year 1696; I have often travelled the counties and shires adjacent, and also to the Land's end in Cornwall, labouring together with Friends, to keep up our meetings for the worship of God, on First days and week days; and not only so, but to keep 'up, and maintain and uphold the good order of Truth, and to have the same put in practice.

And the Lord hath been pleased to make use of me as an instrument, of his own fitting and preparing by his power, in my travels to convince several, both men and women, some of whom became faithful and able ministers in their day; though some of them have finished their Lord and Master's work, and are at rest with him in glory; and others yet remaining. The Lord keep and preserve them, with my

soul and all his every where, diligent and faith

ful unto the end, Amen!

JOHN BANKS.

A

SUPPLEMENT

TO HIS

JOURNAL,

WITH AN ACCOUNT OF HIS

LATTER END, AND DYING WORDS.

After his settling in Somersetshire as aforesaid, by marriage of his second wife, one Hannah Champion, an honest woman of Mear in the said county, widow, which was in the Eighth month, 1696: he travelled in the work of the ministry, as he says, in the Western and adjacent counties, while he was of ability; particularly into Devonshire and Cornwall, with Paul Moon of Bristol, in 1697. And the same year he went to visit Friends in his native county of Cumberland &c. and usually went to the Yearly meeting in London, as long as he was able, and several times into the North, and in particular was at the Yearly meeting in 1698, and 1699, when I came up with him from Bath, and a very comfortable pleasant journey we had together, in true love and unity. And the same year he went into the North again; as also in the year 1700, he was both at the Yearly Meeting and also in the North; and was at the Yearly meeting in London, in 1701, and 1702.
