PREFACE.

THE following Work originated in a course of Lectures which the Author delivered to his own congregation on Sabbath evenings, without a thought of their being known beyond the circle for which they were prepared. In adopting the suggestion made to him to bring them before the public, in preference to another work to which his attention was at that time directed, the inducement was a conviction that of all the works extant on the Typography of Scripture, but few were entitled to an implicit reliance. There is scarcely one of the old writers in this department of sacred literature whose labours discover a judgment and discrimination equal to the exuberance of his fancy. Almost every person and object to which a fruitful imagination could find a resemblance in Christ has been made a type; and even those similes and parallels which have been justly
