Delivered (with recapitulations of the two former Lectures, which are here omitted) on Monday Evening, April 4, 1803.

JESUS returning to Jerusalem, hungers---curses the barren fig-tree---visits the temple again---drives out the buyers and sellers again---(see note in page 44)---asserts his mission and authority.--The scribes and chief priests are offended.---In the evening JESUS retires.

And when he saw a fig-tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever.

LECTURE IV.

Delivered on Tuesday Evening, April 5, 1803. JESUS returning into the city in the morning, his disciples observe that the fig-tree was withered

away. The chief priests and others question his authority.---JESUS proposes a question concerning the baptism of John the Baptist.---The parable of the two sons---of the vineyard let out to unfaithful husbandmen---of the marriage-feast. -JESUS answers the question of the Herodians about the lawfulness of paying tribute to Cæsar. The Sadducees advance a difficulty about the resurrection.---JESUS answers a question about the great commandment in the law.

LECTURE V.

Delivered on Wednesday Evening, April 6, 1803. JESUS puts a question to the Pharisees, Whose Son is JESUS CHRIST ?---denounces several woes, against the scribes and Pharisees---prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem---commends the poor widow's offering---enforces the duty of watchfulness by several parables.---The feast of the passover within two days.----The chief priests and others consult how they may take JESUS.--Judas offers and covenants to betray him---this concludes the fourth day.---Some of the occurrences of thursday, the fifth day, anticipated.-The first day of unleavened bread.---JESUS prepares to keep the passover--sits down with the twelve--rebukes them for their ambition--washes their feet---declares that one of them should be

tray him--and which---foretels the fall of Peter. A short exhortation to the receiving of the Lord's supper.

Institution of the Lord's supper---the ordinance concluded with an hymn.---JESUS comforts, and prays for his disciples---goes with them to the mount of Olives---tells him they shall be offended and leave him.---Peter's confidence.-JESUs enters the garden of Gethsemane---his agony---he is strengthened by an angel--is betrayed by Judas---his disciples forsake him---he is brought to the house of Caiaphas.---Peter's denial and repentance.---False witnesses appear against JESUS---who owns himself to be the CHRIST before the Sanhedrim---is pronounced guilty of death.

ISAIAH liii. 3, 7.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

LECTURE VII.

Delivered, in two parts, on Good-Friday Morning and Evening, April 8, 1803.

JESUS is taken before Pilate.-Judas repents and hangs himself.-The Jews demand judgment against JESUS. --Pilate sends him to Herod-Herod sends him back to Pilate.-The dream of Pilate's wife.-Pilate endeavours in vain to release JESUS-delivers him to be crucified.-JESUS is led away to Golgotha-is crucified between two thieves-prays for his murderers-his garments are divided.-The title upon the cross.JESUS is derided by the chief priests and others.-One of the malefactors repents.-Darkness of three hours.--JESUS expires.---Prodigies attend his death. The centurion's exclamation, and terror of the spectators.---The day of the preparation.-Prophecies fulfilled.-Joseph begs the body of JESUS---takes it from the cross, and deposits it in his own new tomb.

ISAIAH liii. 8, 9.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. p. 143.

1803.
