TO TEACHERS. At a recent meeting of the Committee of the British and Foreign School Society it was resolved

"That the Educational Record be made use of, to a larger extent than hitherto, as a medium of communication with British School Teachers; and that to this end it be forwarded, gratuitously, to all who may express a wish to receive it."

The "Revised Code for 1869," price 3d., by post, 4d. per copy, is now on sale at the Depository.

Communications from Teachers and School Managers in the form of queries, and correspondence on subjects of practical bearing upon the work of teaching, will be cordially welcomed. All such communications, and books for notice, should be addressed to the Editor, British and Foreign School Society, Borough Road, London, S.E.

RECENT EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATIONS.

Dr. Lankester's School Manual of Health. Groombridge and Sons.—Dr. Lankester has earned the right to speak with authority on the subject treated of in this little volume of 120 pages by long and successful study and practice, and has done well in giving so cheap, and readable, and reliable an introduction to the elementary principles of physiology, and so practical a guide to the means of securing health and life, intended for the elder scholars in British, National, and other schools.

A New Method for the Extraction of the Cube Root. By D. R. MELDRUM. Simpkin and Co.--An original and highly ingenious process, and for practical purposes superior to the ordinary method. We doubt, however, whether it is so useful as Horner's. Mr. Meldrum should show in a future edition its application to finding the approximate root decimally, which is the true test of the value of a process.

Arithmetical Examples. Edited by J. S. LAURIE. Marshall and Laurie. -A set of useful exercises, commencing with addition, and ending with bills of parcels. Many of the examples are in words. The same exercises are printed on cards, and the answers are given on separate cards for the use of the teacher.

Maxwell's First Lessons in Geography. By the author of "Home and its Duties." Thomas Laurie.-This little book contains the kind of information usually found in elementary geographies.

First Steps in English Composition. By the author of "The Practical Text-Book of English Composition." Thomas Laurie.—A useful little textbook for junior pupils.

First Lessons in Ancient History. By the Rev. T. WOOLMER. Hodder and Stoughton.-The chapters, though brief, are written in an interesting style. Chronological tables of the most remarkable events in the history of each country are added.

Elements of Latin Syntax. By W. H. HARRIS, B.A., B.Sc., F.G.S. Hodder and Stoughton. This is an excellent treatise. The rules are judiciously arranged and clearly expressed, and the exercises are admirably suited to test the knowledge of the pupil.

ANNIVERSARY MEETING.

THE Annual General Meeting of the Subscribers and Friends of the Society will take place on Monday, the 10th of May next, at the Borough Road, at 12 o'clock. It will be preceded, as usual, by the Examination of the Boys of the Practising School, at 10 o'clock. The Right Hon. the Earl Russell, K.G., President of the Society, has promised to take the Chair.

TRAINING DEPARTMENT.

The 67 students who sat for their certificates at the Borough Road College, passed the examination satisfactorily.

23 were placed in the 1st class, 35 in the 2nd, and 9 in the 3rd. The 26 whose term of studying came to an end in December could only partially supply the 48 schools where either a principal teacher or an assistant was required. They have all secured positions which offer a good prospect of usefulness and comfort. The remaining 41 returned to college on the 29th of January, and were joined by 48 newly admitted candidates. It augurs well for the future that the admissions have risen from 30 in 1867, and 43 in 1868, to 48 in 1869; so that the college is now nearly full.

The 50 outgoing female students secured good places in the examination list, viz., 32 in the 1st class, and 18 in the 2nd. They are all employed in, or engaged for, schools, and would have found sufficient openings had their number been greater by 12. The session for the year 1869 commenced on the 26th of January, the number of students being 50 for the second year's course, and 52 for the first.

It is to be regretted that of the 65 candidates who succeeded at the examination, and wished to enter college, only 50 could be
