RECENT EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATIONS.

Murby's Musical Student's Manual; Pearce and Hague's Analysis of English History. T. Murby.-New editions of text-books already favourably noticed in our pages.

Lessons on Elocution and Reading for Girls. By A. K. ISBISTER, M.A., LL.B. Longmans.-This little work is excellently adapted for its purpose. The selection of extracts is well made.

My Country By E. S. A. Wertheim, Macintosh & Hunt.-The purpose of this history is explained in the preface. "If we find among us those who divide their allegiance between their own and a foreign sovereign, there is only the more need that we who hold the Protestant faith, and admit of no foreign domination, should be cordially united among ourselves, and carefully avoid the strifes and divisions which weaken our hands for good, and gladden those who desire our fall. It is to promote this holy union, and to show how it must grow out of the gospel itself, that this little book is undertaken." Regarded from this point of view, the work is a very fair success, but that the author is not free from prejudice is shown by the denunciation of Cromwell's foreign policy, and the reproduction of the ridiculous stories about the close of his life. The desultory plan on which it is written will detract from its value as a school book.

Murby's Scripture Manuals-Genesis. T. Murby. This little book contains a brief summary and a complete summary of the chapters of Genesis, as well as short biographical and explanatory notes. Candidates preparing for local examination will find it very valuable.

An Elementary Course of Plane Geometry and Mensuration. Second Edition. By R. WORMELL, M.A., B.Sc. T. Murby.-An excellent treatise, abounding in diagrams, engravings, examples, and exercises. We cordially recommend it to the attention of teachers.

The Civil Service Orthography. By E. S. H. B. Lockwood & Co.-A manual written by some one wholly unfamiliar with practical education, for no one accustomed to teach children spelling would think of setting them to learn a hundred and sixty or seventy rules in doggerel verse, of which the following is a specimen :

"Spell flea with a, the flea we know

So well to skip and bite;
Flee with two e's, to flee away,
Escape, or take to flight."

The exercises are judiciously selected.

Spelling and Dictation Exercises. By JAMES DOUGLAS, Ph.D. Oliver and Boyd.-Though not differing in any essential feature from several recently published, it may be recommended as a well-constructed manual.

The First Book of the Satires of Horace in English Verse. By R. M. MILLINGTON, M.A. Longmans.-The special object of this translation is to present to the general public an accurate and readable version of this portion of Horace's works. The book is beautifully printed, and there are many excellent woodcuts to illustrate Roman antiquities.

A Translation of Virgil's Eclogues into Rhythmic Prose. By R. M. MILLINGTON, M.A. Longmans.-The translation, though literal, is given in very pleasant English prose.

TRAINING DEPARTMENT.

BOROUGH ROAD.

THE Anniversary Soirée was held in the Institution on the evening of Friday, the 9th of December, 1870. Several members of the Committee, a goodly number of teachers from various parts of London, and the whole of the students, partook of tea and coffee in the dining-room. About six o'clock they adjourned to the Theatre of the College, where the chair was taken by HUGH OWEN, Esq. He said that as Dr. Barry, of King's College, had another engagement at seven, he would depart from the usual course, and at once call upon Dr. Barry to address the meeting.

DR. BARRY, who upon rising was loudly cheered, said✨

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,—It is very tempting at a time like this, when passing through a great educational crisis, one which is pregnant with incalculable good to our country and mankind,—in fact, it is almost impossible at such a time as this to refrain from glancing at the great subject which has been before the minds of all Englishmen during the last few months,-the subject of Education in general. Although it is a temptation, it is one which to-night I mean to resist. I cannot, of course, help feeling that any address to those who are to take part in the Education of the future is now a matter of more than usual consequence, and that in such a case one should speak with more than usual earnestness, and I hope I shall speak to-night under the influence of the present time. But we have lately heard in the country a great deal of disquisition upon Education in general, and it has been my misfortune to go about delivering my sentiments on the subject in so many forms, that I think by this time you and I are tolerably familiar with the general subject; and it would be far better that I should address you this evening as being, or about to be, schoolmasters; and having been myself a schoolmaster till within the last two years (for something like twenty years), although in a school of a different kind from any that you are occupied in or in training for, I shall take the liberty of saying a few words to you as brothers, younger brothers. I have been, of course, obliged to think a good deal upon what a schoolmaster's work ought to be, and by experience I have gained some knowledge of what its ideals and possibilities are.
