12 THOU didst create the north and the south,

Tabor and Hermon rejoice through Thy Name. 13 THINE is a mighty arm,

Strong is Thy hand, high is Thy right hand.

14 Righteousness and equity are the foundation of Thy throne, Loving-kindness and faithfulness go before Thy face.

15 Happy are the nation,

[ocr errors]

Who are familiar with the sound of the trumpet!

They walk in the light of Thy countenance, O JEHOVAH!

16 They exult in Thy Name all the day,

[ocr errors]

And are exalted through Thy benevolence!

17 For Thou art their glory-their strength,

And through Thy favour is our horn exalted.

Truly, JEHOVAH is our shield,

Yea, the Holy One of Israel is our King.

19 Once Thou didst speak, in vision, of Thy favoured one, And saidst: "I have laid help upon a mighty man, "I have exalted one, chosen from amongst the people. 20 "I have found David, My servant,

"With My holy oil have I anointed him.

"My hand shall firmly support him,

"MINE arm also shall strengthen him.

12 rejoice through Thy Name-i.e. Owing to the fertility with which Thou hast blessed them, these "hills are girded with gladness" (Ps. LXV. 12). Hermon is noticed (Ps. cxxxiii. 3.) as being well-watered and fruitful. Travellers uniformly give the same character to Mount Tabor also.

13 high &c.i.e. superior to every adver-

Ps. XLV. 6, 7. and Ps. xcvii. 2.

to join in the celebration of their religious observances. "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation." Levit. xxiii. 24. 15 They walk &c. - i. e. They are blessed through Thy favour. Compare Ps. xxxvi. 9. Note 2. 19 laid help upon &c.-i. e. enabled him to

Heb. shall be firm

"His

enemy shall not exact tribute from him, "Nor shall the iniquitous man afflict him.

23 "I will crush his adversaries before his face, "And smite those who hate him.

24 "My faithfulness and My loving-kindness shall be with him, "And, in My Name, shall his horn be exalted.

"I will set his hand over the sea,

"And his right hand over the great river.

"He shall call upon Me:

"THOU art my Father

"My God, and the rock of my salvation!

High over the kings of the earth.

28 "Ever will I retain My loving-kindness for him,
"And My covenant with him shall stand firm.

29 "I will appoint his seed to continue for ever,
“And his throne to endure as long as the heavens.
30"If his sons shall forsake My law,

"And not walk according to My judgments

31 "If they shall violate My statutes,

"And not keep My commandments;

32 "I will visit their transgressions with a rod, "And their iniquities with stripes.

33 "Yet I will not withdraw My loving-kindness from him, "Nor act falsely against My faithfulness.

34"I will not violate My covenant,

"Nor alter that which is gone forth out of My lips.

35"I have sworn irrevocably by My holiness,

"That I would not act falsely towards David.

"And his throne shall endure before Me, as the sun;

37 "Like the moon shall it be made firm for ever, "And like the faithful witness in the heavens."

38 But Thou hast cast off and rejected him,

THOU hast been exceedingly angry with Thine anointed. 39 THOU hast abhorred the covenant of Thy servant,

THOU hast cast his crown to the ground and profaned it. 40 THOU hast broken through all his fences,

THOU hast made his fortresses a ruin.

41 All, who pass along the road, plunder him,

He is become an object of reproach to his neighbours. 42 THOU hast exalted the right hand of his adversaries, THOU hast caused all his enemies to rejoice;

43 Yea, Thou hast turned back the edge of his sword,
And hast not enabled him to stand in the battle.
44 THOU hast brought his splendour to an end,
And hurled his throne to the ground.

45 THOU hast shortened the days of his youth,
THOU hast clothed him with shame.

46 How long, O JEHOVAH, wilt Thou hide Thy face? for ever? How long shall Thy wrath burn like fire?

47 Remember how brief is my life

What fleeting creatures Thou hast created all the sons of Adam!

48 What man is there living, who shall not see deathWho shall deliver himself from the power of the grave? 49 Where are Thy loving-kindnesses, which were of old, O Lord? THOU didst sware unto David by Thy faithfulness!

50 Remember, O Lord, the reproach cast upon Thy servantHow I bear in my bosom the reproaches of many nations; 51 Wherewith Thine enemies have pursued, O JEHOVAHWherewith they have pursued the steps of Thine anointed!

52 Blessed be JEHOVAH for ever!

AMEN and AMEN!

PSALM XC.

1 O LORD, Thou hast been our refuge, Through successive generations!

2 Before the mountains were produced

Yea, before the earth and the world were brought forth-
Even from eternity unto eternity, Thou art God!

3 THOU causest feeble man to return to dust,
For Thou sayest: "Return, ye children of Adam!"

4 Truly, a thousand years are, in Thine eyes,
As yesterday, when it is past-
Even as a watch of the night!

51 pursued

Heb. reproached. i. e. followed with revilings.

52 The third book of the Psalms terminates
with this doxology.
PSALM XC.

3 Return to the dust whence ye were
taken. In the sweat of thy face shalt

thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken : for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." Gen. iii. 19.

4 watch of the night-The Jews divided the night into portions, called "watches."

5 THOU Overwhelmest them, they sleep!

They are like grass, which reviveth in the morning—

6 Which in the morning flourisheth and reviveth,

In the evening is cut off, and withereth!

7 For we consume away through Thine anger, And we perish through Thy wrath.

8 THOU hast placed our iniquities before Thee— Our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance.

9 Truly, all our days decline through Thine indignation, We bring our years to an end like a breath!

10 As for the days of our years,

The sum of them is threescore years and ten,
Or, if our frame is strong, fourscore years.
And the pride of them is trouble and vexation!

Of a truth, life quickly passeth away, and we are gone!

11 Who considereth the weight of Thy wrath?

Who, with due reverence for Thee, Thine indignation? 12 So teach us to number our days,

That we may acquire a heart of wisdom!

13 Turn, O JEHOVAH! How long wilt Thou be angry? Have compassion upon Thy servants!

14 Satisfy us early with Thy loving-kindness, That we may sing and rejoice all our days.
