PSALM LX.

1 O GOD, Thou hast rejected us, Thou hast broken in upon us, THOU hast been angry; mayest Thou restore us!

2 THOU hast shaken the land, Thou hast rent it asunder, Repair the breaches thereof, for it tottereth.

3 THOU hast caused Thy people to experience hard things, THOU hast made us to drink the wine of trembling.

4 THOU hast granted unto those, who reverence Thee, an ensign To flee unto, because of Thy truth.

5 That Thy beloved ones may be delivered, Save us with Thy right hand and answer us!

6 God hath spoken by His holiness!

Triumphantly shall I portion out Shechem,
And measure the valley of Succoth.

7 Gilead is with me, and Manasseh is with me,
Ephraim also is the defender of my life,
Judah is my law-giver.

8 Moab shall hold the basin in which I wash, To Edom will I throw my shoes;

Over Philistia will I raise the shout of triumph.

9 Who will bring me to the fenced city? Who will guide me unto Edom?

10 Hast not Thou, O God, rejected us?

Yea Thou, O God, goest not forth with our armies!

11 Give unto us relief from our distress, For vain is the help of man.

12 Through God shall we perform deeds of valour, And it is He who shall tread down our enemies.

PSALM LXI.

1 HEAR, O God, my cry,

Listen unto my prayer.

2 From the extremity of the land I call upon Thee,

In the faintness of my heart;

Lead me up into the mountain which is too high for me.

8 my shoes-that he may carry them. To take off the shoes and to wash the feet were offices assigned to slaves. To this custom there is frequent reference in scripture. Thus "whose shoes I am not worthy to bear." Matt. iii. 11. and "the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose." Mark i. 7. Also "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet." Joh. xiii. 14.

9 Who will bring &c.-i. e. How earnestly

do I desire to engage in an enterprise, of the success of which I have been graciously assured!

11 relief- Heb. help.

PSALM LXI.

2 too high for me-so lofty that, in my present weak condition, I cannot reach the summit of it without Thine assistance. David adopts this language to express the difficulties which he had to encounter, in returning to Mount Sion during Absalom's rebellion.

3 Truly Thou hast been a place of refuge for me—
A strong tower against mine enemies.

4 Let me sojourn in Thy tabernacle continually,
Suffer me to take refuge under cover of Thy wings.

5 Truly Thou, O God, hast heard my vows,

THOU givest me the inheritance of those who reverence Thy Name. 6 THOU prolongest the days of the king,

His years continue, like successive generations.

7 He dwelleth continually before God;

His loving-kindness and faithfulness preserve him.

8 Therefore will I hymn Thy Name for ever, And pay my vows on each succeeding day.

PSALM LXII.

1 TRULY upon God do I repose,

From Him is my salvation.

2 HE truly is my rock and my salvation,

He is my lofty tower of refuge; I shall not be greatly moved.

3 How long will ye attack with clamour

How long will ye all assault a man,

As though he were a leaning wall—
A fence nearly thrust down?

[blocks in formation]

4 Truly they consult how to thrust him down from his eminence,

They delight in falsehood;

With their mouth they bless,
But in their hearts they curse.

5 Truly upon God do I repose,

For from Him is mine expectation.

6 HE truly is my rock and my salvation,

He is my lofty tower of refuge; I shall not be moved.
With God is my salvation and my glory;

My strong rock, my place of refuge is in God.

8 Place your confidence in Him at all times, ye people, Pour out your hearts before Him:

"God is our place of refuge.”

9 Truly men of low degree are vanity,

(saying)

Men of high degree are a fallacious hope;

They, all together, are lighter in the scales than vanity.

10 Place not your confidence in oppression;

Trust not vainly in rapine.

When riches increase,

Set not your heart upon them.

11 Once hath God spoken,

[ocr errors]

Twice have I heard this

That "power belongeth unto God!"

12 To Thee also, O Lord, belongeth loving-kindness,

For Thou dost reward every man according to his works.

4 in their hearts - Heb. within them.

7 With God dependent upon Him. 10 in oppression-i. e. in wealth gotten by oppression.

11 Twice-This is the Hebrew method of

expressing that a thing has been repeatedly done. In the present instance, the repetition is intended to mark the solemnity and importance of the precept delivered.

PSALM LXIII.

1 O GOD, Thou art my God, I seek Thee early, I thirst for Thee;

My flesh pineth after Thee,

In a thirsty and weary land which is without water; 2 That I may so see Thy power and Thy glory, As I have beheld Thee in the sanctuary.

3 Because Thy loving-kindness is better than life, My lips celebrate Thy praise.

4 Therefore do I bless Thee while life remaineth, I lift up my hands in Thy Name.

5 As though I were filled with marrow and fatness, My mouth praiseth Thee with joyful lips,

6 While I call Thee to mind upon my bed

While I muse upon Thee during the night-watches.

7 Because Thou hast been a help unto me,

Therefore do I sing with joy under the shadow of Thy wings. 8 I cleave unto Thee,
