The Only Remedy.

"WHEN the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall put him to flight." Agnosticism in one quarter, Positivism in another, and new and menacing practices in regard to religion have certainly set in upon us. Is it not time, then, that we should look for and expect the fulfilment of the promise? It is, however, with the practical side of this matter, and chiefly in relation to ourselves as a section of the Church of Christ, we mean at present to deal. No one, either insufficiently acquainted with, or wholly without, Biblical knowledge, can adequately, if at all, resist the flood of words with which the before-named errors are poured out upon us, any more than it is possible to take a wise course in respect to novel modes of Church work, unless one is able to bring them to the light of Scripture. It is no disparagement of science to say that it does not supply a means of testing either Agnosticism or Positivism. Its boundaries extend not to the places wherein these diverge from sound wisdom. But what science cannot do at all, the Bible does fully. Where phenomena becomes inadequate in accounting for things beyond its province, Revelation is explicit and satisfactory. The Bible at once offers rebuke, and supplies guidance to the student of truth. If he allows himself to be led astray, it reproves him; or if he feels himself in darkness, it comes to his help with light. In like manner, assertions of the results of new devices as to Church work bring one into confusion; but the Word tells us not to weary in well doing, but, trusting in the Lord, to continue, like Moses, to observe the pattern shown in the Mount. Of course, the necessity of the Spirit's illumination and Divine grace are indispensable to the proper use of Holy Scripture. These being understood, and looking at what one sees and hears, the question arises, Could such things go on if the Word were fully and simply preached; and if our Sunday-schools, and other modes of Bible

PAGE WOODCOCK'S WIND PILLS

To MR. PAGE D. WOODCOCK, Norwich.

Manchester, June 13, 1877.

Sir, I have found your Pills an excellent preparation for the Constipation and Flatulency so common in both sexes. They possess great advantages over other Pills. Their uniformity in strength, the smallness of the dose, and the certainty of their action, commend them to those who require a tonic to assist digestion, relieve wind in the stomach, exert a special influence on the liver, and also the peristalic motion of the bowels, resulting from chronic indigestion and lack of assimilation. The more my experience in their varied applicability extends, the more their beneficial effects appear, and many households have found a great friend in your preparation, for the promotion of a healthy digestion. Their favourable action are all that could be wished for.-I am, faithfully yours,

THOS. FOSTER KER, Surgeon.
