FORM OF SOCIAL WORSHIP FOR THE

EVENING.

"From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, the Lord's name is to be praised.”—Ps. cxiii.

HAVING taken your places, my dear children, duly reflect on the mercies and enjoyments you may have experienced throughout the day; and the need in which you stand of the protection and blessing of your heavenly Father, for your safe and healthful repose during the night. These thoughts will fit you for joining, with becoming seriousness, in the devotions of the evening, commencing with the reading, by the Principal, of some of the sentences selected from the Holy Scriptures for the purpose.

Then shall be repeated, in alternate responses, the Deus Misereatur, or 67th Psalm; after which shall be read the general confession, in which all kneeling shall join, as also in the Lord's Prayer, which shall be said after the prayer for the forgiveness of sins. The Principal shall then read three collects, the first for the day, the second for peace, the third for protection and safety; after which shall be read the general thanksgiving, with the usual benediction. Then, all standing up, the

Apostles' Creed and the Ten Commandments shall be said. And as from incidental circumstances, such as the younger pupils being fatigued, towards the close of the day; or, as in winter, the inconvenience of candle light, it may not be deemed expedient to lengthen such parts of the evening worship as may require a reference to books, it is recommended that, in place of a selection from the psalms, the service should be concluded by a hymn, the repetition of which ought to be considered a mark of distinction, and reward of good conduct in the pupil to whom it may be assigned for the week,
