ART. 86. A Fortnight's Ramble to the Lakes in Westmoreland, Lancafbire, and Cumberland. By a Rambler. The fecond Edition. 8vo. 292 pp. 58. Nichols. 1795. As a lively and unaffected narrative, calculated to communicate to the reader the good humour with which the author penned it, this ramble has had the good fortune, often unknown to more elaborate works, to reach a fecond edition. The author, in republishing his tour, has bestowed upon it fome corrections and improvements, and has added his name; by which we learn that it proceeds from the fame pen which gave a poetical account of the fiege of Gibraltar, noticed in our fifth volume, p. 172. Captain Budworth's Account of the King and Queen of Patterdale, p. 82, &c. of this volume, is fingularly entertaining; but it has been quoted in various prints, and we cannot at present afford space to introduce it. ART. 87. An elementary Introduction to the Latin Grammar, with practical Exercifes, after a new and eafy Method, adapted to the Capacity of young Beginners. Svo. 373 PP, 35. 6d. Boofey. 1795. This may be useful to many; but it is much too prolix. The examples feem unnecessarily multiplied; but the lifts of the verbs, as exemplifying the conjugations, are exceedingly well calculated to remove difficulties from young beginners. All attempts to fimplify the modes of communicating inftruction we confider as in the highest degree laudable. ART. 88. The Latin Primer, in three Parts; containing Rules of Conftruction, Rules of Pofition, and a large and plain Defcription of Latin Verfe, particularly of the Metra Horatiana. By the Rev. This is a work of greater skill and usefulness than the preceding, and feems drawn up by an experienced hand. The account of Horatian Metres is a fort of defideratum to the grammars moft in ufe. Of the origin and nature of this work the editors, in their preface, give the following account: "La Correfpondence fecrete du Comte de Broglie avec Louis XV. eft une des plus fingulières particularités de fon regne. Ce Prince s'étoit livré à l'alliance avec la maifon d'Autriche. Mais outre fes miniftres oftenfibles, il avoit des fecrets qui lui repréfentoient les inconveniens de ce fyftême de politique. Voilà l'objet des correfpondances des Broglie, des d'Eon, des Vergennes, avec Louis XV. à l'infu des Choiseul et des d'Aiguillon. "A l'avénement de Louis XVI. le Comte de Broglie lui rendit un fidèle compte de tout ce qui avoit rapport à ce fecret diplomatique. Nous publions ici les pièces authentiques qui renferment ce compte et de précieuses anecdotes. Quant à la Correfpondance elle-même, elle a été brûlée: mais la partie la plus inftructive, et la plus favante, les Conjectures de Favier fur les interêts de la France avec les autres puiffances, ont furvécu à cette deftruction: un feul manufcrit en exiftoit dans le Cabinet de Louis XVI. Nous terminons nôtre fecond volume par des Memoires du Comte de Vergennes, Turgot, et autres miniftres fur les époques les plus importantes du dernier regne. We do not pretend to determine how far this statement is really to be depended on, and shall therefore, in order to give our readers fome idea of the fecond, or more interefting part, prefent them with an extract from it, in which the author, Favier, informs us what was at that period, in his judgment, the fituation of France in regard to this country. Supérieure en toute autre chofe, la France ne le cède, même en fait de marine, qu'à l'Angleterre feule. Si celle-ci lui laiffoit le loifir de rétablir la fienne, il n'y auroit bientôt plus d'égalité. Les avantages naturels de la France, fes moyens, fes reffources du fol, de la population, de l'induftrie, du numéraire, l'enthoufiafme patriotique dont la nation eft fufceptible, pour peu qu'elle foit encouragée, tout cela mis en œuvre avec intelligence, manié avec ordre, développé avec énergie, formeroit un poids, une maffe dont l'impulfion bien dirigée renverferoit enfin le coloffe de la puiffance Angloife. Le parlement, le ministère n'eft pas ébloui, comme le peuple, d'un enchainement de profpérités paffagères, de l'étendue des colonies, ni de la multiplication des millions fterlings en papier dans la circulation intérieure. L'administration éclairée fent les mouvemens convulfifs de l'Irlande fatiguée du joug, l'immenfité de la dette nationale, et cependant la néceffité d'augmenter cette derte par l'impoffibilité de créer de nouveaux impôts. D'après ces principes le comité fecret n'eft occupé que d'entretenir la marine Angloife fur un pied refpectable, de tenir la nôtre dans l'inertie, dans l'aviliffement, et, s'il le faut, d'être toujours prêt à en achever la deftruction, plutôt que d'en fouffrir le rétabliffement. In a note the author thus characterises the members of this fecret committee: "Ce comité eft compofé de trois miniftres préponderans; milord Rocheford dirige les affaires étrangères; Sandwich, la marine, qui feul peut donner du poids aux négociations; et milord North, les finances au foutien de la marine. On n'a point avec eux les moyeps que la France a employés fi heureufement fous Louis XIV. auprès des miniftres de Charles II. Tout eft bien changé dépuis ce tems-là; à prefent il y va de leur tête; ils font incorruptibles; des traitemens immenfes les mettent d'ailleurs à l'abri de la tentation. Charles II. étoit corrompu le premier. Georges III. n'a peut être aucun des talens de ce prince, de fes qualités brillantes et féduifantes: mais auffi eft-il exempt de fes foibleffes et de fes paffions; c'étoient elles qui l'entrainoient à tolérer la corruption dont il donnoit l'exemple. Milord Rocheford eft homme de plaifir, mais encore plus homme d'honneur. Venice, The greatest part of this poem, of which the Latin original was never before published, confifts of a defcription of the prevailing manners of the country in which it was written, particularly among the female fex, to which are to be attributed the fewnefs of their marriages, and the confequent decreafe in the population. When the tranflator affures us that this fatire contains many paffages not unworthy of Juvenal or of Perfius, we take it for granted that he can mean thofe verfes and hemiftichs only which Dr. Br. has really tranfcribed from thofe poets. The author thus defcribes the attention paid by the ladies of his country to the public philofophical and theological lec tures: "dum cornicatur inepte Dum tendens jecur Aufidius fubfellia rumpit, Hippia torrentem audit femibiante labello, Nunc premit in rugas, aperit nunc fcita flabellum Notwithstanding thefe inftructions they indulge in irregularities, which, fays our author, are often not difcouraged even by their hufbands themselves.
