of the sin, sorrow, and suffering in the world, and the results of such efforts if persevered in; which record experiments in the paths of charity (why are we not all more ready to venture such experiments ?), and novel methods of meeting patent evils-are sure to be read, and this we presume is always an object to those who write. At the same time, when we ask that papers sent us, with a request that they may be admitted at the earliest opportunity, should be readable, we do not mean that they must always be forwarded in that highly finished condition which will give them the right to be at once passed on to a place in the compositor's frame. No; the Editor or one of his staff will very gladly spend an hour or two in putting in the stops' and otherwise polishing up such papers as, either from want of time or talent on the part of their authors, are sent to him 'in the rough.' Papers by an unaccustomed hand are often written with much vigour and originality, and require but very little to cast them into shape. Still there must be some material to work upon-something which will not only help to furnish the sinews of war' for the writers, but which will possess some interest for the many thousand readers of this magazine, scattered throughout the world. We venture likewise to hope that some helpful papers on Work for GOD and His Church may be furnished by those whohappily for themselves—are not in the position of beggars. A very great deal of good work is being done throughout the Church of England which it would be interesting and instructive to others to hear of. A great many earnest workers fancy they are toiling in complete isolation, when, perhaps, only a few counties distant, or it may be in some of our dependencies across the ocean, the very same questions are being fought out, the same battles faced. Would it not be well that some of these labourers in the Master's vineyard should lose a little of their loneliness by meeting in spirit through the pages of this periodical? We should be especially glad, at the present time, to receive accounts of any successful clubs that have been started for working men or boys; any efforts to provide wholesome and rational amusement for the working classes, in the form of concerts, free-andeasies, penny readings, acted charades or plays, &c., &c.; also records of self-supporting food depôts, soup-kitchens; of libraries, and work or mendicity societies. Having made this appeal, we doubt not many public-spirited persons will come forward and labour with us to render Our Work more and more of an encouragement and assistance to all diligent workers as time goes on. While we are still basking in the warmth of a somewhat late summer, it may seem somewhat premature to begin to speak of next Christmas and its doings; and yet it is not too soon to remind those many diligent workers who supply our fancy sales with such useful and attractive goods that another sale of work will be held in one of the West End Halls in the middle of December. Neither the exact date nor the locality is decided, but ample notice will be given to those who intend to be purchasers. But the workers are entreated at once to begin and utilise their leisure hours, and even their odd minutes, for the production of those many pretty articles which they know so well how to manufacture. The present is with many a season for holiday-making. Yet need not even this time be entirely devoted to amusement and pleasure-seeking. Many a morning on the sea-shore, many a long day's train-travelling, many a wet day of detention at some foreign hotel, might be profitably and happily passed in preparing something useful or artistic for the stalls of our Christmas sale. In these and many other similar ways which will suggest themselves to the zealous members of the C. E. A., hours, which might otherwise be wasted in selfish inactivity, may be turned to account for the benefit of hundreds of poor children who now pine through the hot long days of summer in many a close court and stifling garret, longing unconsciously for those grand remedies of Nature which seem to fall so plentifully to the lot of others-fresh air and plentiful food, and all the many delights of the free, happy country. Stray boughts on Raith, Life, and Work. OES GOD call you to give up your whole life to His service? Happy are you. You may not see it now; but one day you will know the great, the tremendous grace you have had offered you, and which you have either accepted, or— rejected. Let any souls, however weak, however dark, however imperfect, only hear and follow such a call, and they have nothing further to fear. GOD will help them. He will cause them to grow in grace, and they will go on becoming brighter and brighter unto the perfect day. All they have to do is to follow CHRIST, as the Apostles followed Him to keep Him in their eye and steadily before them as S. Peter did. But they must not take their eyes off Him, to see if other people are looking at them, neither must they care for their opinions nor listen to their words. Oh, no! the Apostles would never have left all to follow our LORD, if they had waited to hear all that their friends had to say about it first. And for future years-trust JESUS with all. He who has begun such a good work in you can accomplish it unto the end. We can do all things through CHRIST, Who strengthens us-all things. Only lean your whole weight on this almighty Power, and the seas shall turn into dry land, and the seasons fail to succeed each other, and the sun and moon fall from heaven, sooner than He shall fail you or permit you to fall away. Love for souls. Let us love. Let us love the masses of souls with which we come in contact-deal with them tenderly; be gentle, kind, with them, like our dear Master. We must LOVE the people if we want to be the means of saving them. Many a worker complains of failure simply because this great fact is overlooked. Where souls are loved with some of God's great yearning, the results will be manifest. Self-consciousness.-Any man who is good for anything, if he is always thinking about himself will come to think himself good for nothing very soon. So the first thing for a man to do, who wants to use his best powers at their best, is to get rid of self-consciousness, to stop thinking about himself and how he is working altogether. Do you say 'Ah! it is very easy to tell a man to stop thinking about himself, but how is he to do it? It is such a hard thing to do.' Of course it is, but there is a power which GOD has put into the human heart which will just help men to do this; and that is the power of loving and working for our fellow-men. In this lies our hope of being rescued from self-consciousness and all its curses. A man is trying to test himself, wondering whether he can do this, whether he can do that, almost despairing when he sees how little he can do. Then there suddenly comes to him the cry of a world, or the cry of a fellow-creature that must have help. The cry rises up and appals him, but it saves him from the consideration of self altogether.
