THE Author has been induced to undertake this little manual, at the suggestion of several Clergymen and friends of the Bible, who have expressed their opinion, that "AN ALPHABETICAL REFUTATION OF THE COMMON OBJECTIONS TO THE SACRED SCRIPTURES, WITHOUT EXHIBITING THE OBJECTIONS THEMSELVES, is, in these days, a decided desideratum. How far he has succeeded, he does not pretend to say; but it is (to his knowledge) the first work of the kind that, as yet, has ever been published. As there are but few (if any) new arguments against the Bible, so there can be but few, new refutations thereof; except those derived from the advanced state of natural philosophy, and of science in general. That the Author has therefore, drawn largely from the works of others cannot but be expected: originality in arrangement, rather than in producing new matter, having been his principal object. Finally, it will be perceived he has not introduced the evidences of the truth of the Divine origin of the Bible, (except in the most incidental manner) there being already numerous valuable treatises on that subject, amongst which, Paley's stands pre-eminently distinguished. 1 * |
