CH A P. II.

3. And all went to be taked, every one into his own city:

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judca, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David)

s To be caxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was that while chey were there, the days were accomplished that the Ahould be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her first-born fon, and wrapped him in swadling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. ,

8 And there were in the fime country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the

form of a Province : And because all were number'd by their Nations and Families, che Inhabitants of Jndea were obliged to repair to the Places where their respective Families had their first rise, to be number'd there. 'Twas for this reason that Joseph who was descended from King David, went from Nazareth of Galilee into Judea and came to the Town of Bethlehem (that being tlie antient Seat of David's Family) to have his name taken there, together with Mary his Wife, still big with childg as she had been from the time of

their Contract before marriage. While they lodg'd at this place in an Inn, Mary's time being come, she was deliver'd of her firstborn Son. The Inn being full of Guests, the for want of a more convenient place, was fain to lay the Child to sleep (when the had wrap'd him up in swadling clothes) as commodiously as the could in the Stable. The very fame Night in which The was deliver'd, an Angel of God came to some Shepherds who were watching over their Flocks in those parts : As soon as he appear'd, all the place instantly

10 And the angel said unco
them, Fear not : for behold,
I bring you good tidings of
great joy, which shall be co

11 For unto you is born this day,in the city of David,a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this Mall be a sign unto you ; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swadling clothes lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hoft praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men.

IS And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the Thepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Thin'd with such an extraordinary Light, that the Shepherds were mightily amaz'd and terrified. Then faid the Angel, Fear not; for I bring you glad Tidings, and such as may well occasion the greatest Joy to the whole Jewith Nation ; The great Saviour and King, the Messiah whom you have so long expected, is born this night at Bethlehem: And the token you shall know him by, if you go thither, is, that you Shall find him wrap'd up in swadling Clothes, and lying in a Stable. When the Angel had said this, he ascended again to Heaven, and there was presently heard a found which seem'd to be the Voices of a Multitude of Angels in the Air praising God and saying, Glory be given to God in Heaven, and may all kind of blef sings descend on Earth, by which the Favour and Mercy of God may be express'd to men. After this the Angels return'd into Heaven, and the Shepherds resolv'd' to run to Bethlehem, that they might see with their Eyes the truth of what had been

was told them concerning
this child.

18 And all they thac heard it, wondred at those things which were cold them by the shepherds.

19 Bur Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God, for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

reveald to them. They went immediately with as much Expedition as they could, and found Joseph and Mary, and the Child yet lying in the Stable. When they had seen the Infant, they told Joseph and Mary and the rest, what a Revelation they had had concerning this Child, as they were watching in the Fields in the night; which did not a little excite the wonder of all that heard them. But Mary, especially carefully treasur'd up in her Memory whatever the heard concerning her Son. The Shepherds after this return'd to their Flock glorifying and praising God, that he had been pleas'd to honour 'em with such a glorious Vision of Angels, and a light of the Mefah.

Now because Jesus was commonly reputed to be the son of Joseph, and indeed was adopted by him, tho he was begotten without the concurrence of Him or any scher Man; I shall subjoin the Genealogy of Joseph, who deriy'd his Birth from
