XI. 30 Now Jefus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they faw Mary that the rofe up haftily, and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth to the grave, to weep there. 32 Then when Mary was come where Jefus was, and faw him, The fell down at his feet, faying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 When Jefus therefore faw her weeping, and the Jews alfo weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 And faid, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and fee. who was ftill in the fame place where Martha met him. The Company with her perceiving her run out in that hafte, and imagining the was going thro excess of Grief to her Brother's Sepulchre to fhed fome tears over it, and lament her lofs, followed her; but he went directly to Jefus, and falling down at his feet, cried out with the fame exclamation as her Sifter Martha, Sir, if thou hadst bin here, my Brother would not have bin dead.. Jefus perceiving her bewail her Brother's death with fo much concern, and the Jews themfelves that came to comfort her lamenting, was touch'd with the like paffion, and ask'd where they had laid him; whereupon they carried him to the Sepulchre. In the mean time confidering the miferable condition of human Life, and the great forrow the death of Lazarus had occafion'd to his Sifters, he could not refrain from weeping. The Jews obferving his tears, and the great friendship he had for Lazarus, laid to one another with a fort of wonder; Could not this Jefus, who was able to give fight to him that was born blind, by his Prayers preferve. It was a cave, and Itone lay upon it. 39 Jefus faid, Take ye away the ftone. Martha, the fifter of him that was dead, faith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40 Jefus faith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that if thou Wouldeft believe thou shouldeft fee the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the ftone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jefus life up his eyes, and faid, Father, I thank thee that thou haft heard me. 42 And I knew that thou heareft me always but because of the people which fland by, I faid it, that they may believe that thou hast fent me. 43 And when he thus had fpoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. preferve this his Friend from the Grave? They came at laft to the Sepulchre, which was in a Cave, the entrance into which was clos'd with a great Stone, which he ordered them to remove, tho Martha told him it was impoffible but he must needs by this time ftink, having bin four days dead. Jefus ask'd her, whether he had not told her, that if the relied on him the fhould fee a remarkable Miracle, which would afford her an eminent occafion of adoring the Goodness of God. Upon this they remov'd the Stone from the mouth of the Cave in which the Corps lay. Then Jefus, who filently had prayed to his Father for the Refurrection of Lazarus, lifting up his hands to Heaven; I thank thee, O Father, faid he, that thou haft granted my Petition: I know indeed that thou always heareft my Prayers, but I thus fpeak for the fake of the Multitude about me, that by obferving this wonderful effect of my Prayers they may be convinc'd that thou haft fent me. Having thus fpoke, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, arife, and come out of the Sepulchre. Ddd 2 The JOHN. CHA P. XI. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loofe him, and let him go. 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had feen the things which Jefus did, believed on him. 46 But fome of them went their ways to the Pharifees, and told them what things Jefus had done. 47 Then gathered the chief priefts and the Pharisees a council, and faid, What do we? for this man doth many miracles. 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him; and the Romans fhall come and take away both our place and nation. 49 And one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest that fame year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, The Corps immediatly having recover'd Life and Strength, rofe up, his Legs and Arms being bound, which Jefus ordered to be loofned. Many of the Inhabitants of Jerufalem feeing this Miracle, believed on him; but fome repaired to the chief of the Pharifees, and inform'd them of it, that they might take care their Authority did not fuffer by it, if it once came to be divulg'd. The chief Priests therefore and Pharifees affembled the Sanhedrim, and made this report to them. Many Propofitions were debated in the Affembly about this emergency, and several Expedients offer'd to fecure the State from any damage that might accrue to it; it being certain that Jefus had perform'd many Miracles, which they continued obftinately to attribute to the power of the evil Spirits. For they were afraid that many being perfuaded by thefe Miracles, would believe him to be the Meffiah, whom they expected to rescue them from the Tyranny of the Romans; and that if they neglected the matter, it might be attended with a general Infurrection of the Jews, which if it happen'd, 'twas to be fear'd the Romans would fend an Army, and utterly deftroy the City and the Temple, and put the whole Jewish Nation to the Sword. Caiaphas was at that time High Prieft, who having heard the Debates on both fides, ftood up and faid, That they were unacquainted with their own Intereft who re fus'd MATTHEW. MARK. LUKE. JOHN. CHAP. XI. so Nor confider that it is expedient for us, that one man fhould die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 And this fpake he not of himfelf: but being high priest that year, he prophefied that Jefus fhould die for that nation; 52 And not for that nation only, but that alfo he should gather together in one, the chil dren of God that were scattered abroad. $3 Then from that day forth, they took counsel together for to put him to death. 54 Jefus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his difciples. fus'd to condemn Jefus, because he did not appear criminal; and did not take notice, that it was much more advisable that one man fhould be deftroyed than the whole Nation cut off. Which words were truer than he imagin'd': and being High Prieft, 'twas with a Divine impulfe he predicted that Jefus was to be offer'd as a Victim to expiate the Sins of the People; and that by this Sacrifice it fhould come to pafs that all who defir'd to be reckon'd in the number of God's People, should be united into one Body. The Sanhedrim, mov'd by thefe words of Caiaphas, from that time fought an opportunity of putting him to death. For which reafon Jefus appear'd no more openly, nor in the frequented places of Judea, but remain'd in a part of the Country near the Wilderness of Jericho, not far from a little Town .. call'd Ephraim, where he continued with his Apoftles till the next Paffover.
