into the fynagogue on the fab-
bath-day, and stood up for
to read.

17 Andthere was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Efaias; and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gofpel to the poor; he hath fent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of fight to the blind, to fet at liberty them that are bruise d,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minifter, and fat down: and the eyes of all them that were in the fynagogue were faftened on him.

21 And he began to fay unto them, This day is this fcripture fulfilled in your ears.

to read fome Leffon out of the Prophets, as was practis'd among the Jews. The Minister of the Synagogue therefore reached him the Book of the Prophet IJaiah, which turning over, he happen'd upon the place where it is written, ch. 61. 1, 2. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath fent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim Liberty to the Captives, and the opening of the prifon to them that are bound to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. When he had read thefe words, he clos'd the Book, and reftor'd it to the Minifter: All mens eyes being fix'd upon him, he fat down, and preach'd unto them, telling 'em that this day that Prophecy of Ifaiah was fulfil'd.

22 And all bare him witnefs, and wondred at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they faid, Is not this Jofeph's fon?

23 And he faid unto them, Ye will furely fay unto me this proverb, Phyfician, heal thy felf: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do alfo here in thy countrey.

24 And he faid, Verily I fay unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own countrey.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Ifrael in the days of Elias, when the heaven was fhut up three years and fix months, when great famine was throughout all the land:

CHAP. IV.

44 For Jefus himself teftified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own countrey..

They all extol'd him, and wonder'd at the fingular Gracefulness of his Speech,, inquiring of one another whether this was not the Son of Jofeph? Whence then faid they, has this man acquir'd fo much Learning, having been fo long educated by fuch mean Parents? But they gave no credit to the Miracles they had heard of,. because they never faw him perform any in their prefence. Which Jefus perceiving, I know very well, faid he, that you are ready to object this Proverb to me, Phyfician, heal thy felf: That is, if I would be efteem'd as a Prophet in this City, I ought to fhow fome Miracles alfo in my own Country, and the place in which I have been bred and educated, as I have done in other parts, and especially at Capernaum. But you are to take notice, that no Prophet has ever been receiv'd by his own Countrymen with that Honor that was due to him, and that there are very few who deferve fo great a favour as to have Miracles wrought among them. There were doubtless many poor Widows among the Jews in the days of Elias, when there had been no Rain for two and forty months. together, and a terrible Famine raged over all the Land of Palestine. 26 But unto none of them was Elias fent, fave unto Sarepta a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Ifrael in the time of Elifeus the prophet: and none of them was cleanfed, faving Naaman the Syrian.

28 And all they in the fynagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rofe up, and thruft him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill (whereon their city was built) that they might caft him down headlong.

30 But he paffing through the mids of them went his way:

45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having feen all the things that he did at Jerufalem at the feaft for they also went unto the feaft.

the Prophet was fent but to one poor Widow, who liv'd at Sarepta in the Territory of the Sidonians. So alfo in the time of Elifeus, there were many Jews infected with a Leprofy, yet only Naaman a Syrian was cur'd by him of that Difeafe. The Nazarenes were greatly inrag'd by this Speech of Jefus, it plainly appearing that he look'd upon 'em as a People of very little Religion, who would have no regard to any of God's Prophets, and confequently were unworthy of having any Miracles performed among them. Hereupon they unanimoufly rofe up, and hurried him away to the Brow of the Hill on which Nazareth was built, intending to precipitate him from it: But the Divine Power refcued him from their impious Hands, becoming on a fudden invifible to 'em, and none knowing how he had efcap'd 'em. Jefus afterwards went into the other parts of Galilee, where he was more kindly entertain'd, there being many in that Country who had feen the Miracles he had wrought the laft Paffover at Jerufalem.

CHAP. IV..

46 So Jefus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain noble man, whose son was fick at Capernaum.

47 When he heard that Jefus was come our of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and befought him that he would. come down, and heal his fon: for he was at the point of death.

48 Then faid Jefus unto him, Except ye fee figns and wonders, ye will not believe.

49 The noble man faith. unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

50 Jefus faith unto him, Go thy way; thy fon liveth. And the man believed the word that Jefus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his fervants met him, and told him,. faying, Thy fon liveth.

While he was at Cana, the place where he had the fame year turn'd Water into Wine, a certain Officer of Herod the Tetrarch, who had heard of his return out. of Judea into Galilee, came to him, and defir'd him to go with him to Capernaum, and heal his Son, who was dangerously ill. This he was requested likewife by the reft of the Jews, who would fcarce believe on him upon any other account; which made Jefus upbraid 'em, faying, Unless I work miracles among you, you will not give credit to thofe that have been Eye-witneffes of them, nor have any respect to my Doctrine, nor the Teftimony of John, which ought to be of fo great moment. with you. But the Officer vehemently prefs'd him to go along with him, his Son being at the point of death. Jefus bid him return to Capernaum, affuring him his Son was recover'd. The man hereupon went home joyfully, believing what Jefus had faid to him: Being not far from the City, his Servants met him, and brought him the good news of his Son's Recovery. The Father ask'd 'em at what time

sa Then enquired he of them the hour, when he began to amend ; and they faid unto him, Yefterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

53 So the father knew that it was at the fame hour, in the which Jefus faid unto him, Thy fon liveth; and himself be lieved, and his whole house.

54 This is again the fecond miracle that Jefus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

he began to mend, who told him the Fever left him about the feventh hour, which was the very hour in which Jefus told him his Son was recover'd; the Man therefore with all his Family believed that Jefus was fent by God to the Jewish Nation. This was the fecond Miracle that Jefus wrought that year in Galilee, for the first was his miraculous Escape out of his Countrymens hands at Nazareth, as has been before related.
