2 The rolling fun, the changing light.
And nights and days thy power confefs;
But the bleft volume thou haft writ
Reveals thy juftice and thy grace.

3 Sun moon and ftars convey thy praife
Through the whole earth, and never ftand;
So when thy truth began its race,
It touch'd and glanc'd on every land.
4 Nor fhall thy fpreading gofpel reft,
Til through the world thy truth has run;
Till Chrift hath all the nations bleft
That fee the light or feel the fun.
5 Great fun of righteousness, arise;
Blefs the dark world with heavenly light,
Thy gospel makes the fimple wife,
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.
6 Thy nobleft wonders here we view,
In fouls renew'd and fins forgiven;
Lord, cleanse my fins, my foul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heaven.

PSALM XIX. Six Line Long Metre. *
REAT God, the heaven's well order'd frame
Declares the glory of thy name;

G

Here thy rich works of wonder fhine;
A thousand starry beauties there,
A thoufand radiant marks appear
Of boundless power and skill divine.
2 From night to day, from day to night,
The dawning and the dying light.

Lectures of heavenly wifdom read;
With filent eloquence, they raise
Our thoughts to our Creator's praise,
And neither found nor language need.

3 Yet their divine inftructions run Far as the circuit of the fun,

5

And every nation knows their voice; Where'er he spreads his beams abroad, He publishes his maker, God,

Rolls round, and makes the earth rejoice.
But when we read thy written word
What light and joy thofe leaves afford!
These are our ftudy and delight :

Not honey fo invites the taste,
Nor gold that hath the furnace past,
Appears so pleasing to the fight.
From the discoveries of thy law,
The perfect rules of life we draw ;

But 'tis thy bleffed gofpel, Lord,
Which makes our guilty confcience clean,
Converts our foul, fubdues our fin,

And gives a free but large reward.
Who knows the errors of his thoughts!
Forgive, O Lord, our fecret faults,

And from prefumptuous fins restrain :
Accept the tribute of our praise,
That we have read thy book of grace,
And book of nature, not in vain.

PSALM XIX. Short Metre.

For the Lord's Day Morning.
EHOLD, the morning fun

B Begins his glorious way,

*

His beams through all the nations run,
And life and light convey.

2 But where the gofpel comes,
It fpreads diviner light;

WATTS.

3

It calls dead finners from their tombs,
And gives the blind their fight.
How perfect is thy word!

And all thy judgments juft!
Forever fure thy promise, Lord,
And we fecurely trust.

4 My gracious God, how plain
Are thy directions given!
I never read in vain,
But find the path to heaven.
5 I hear thy word with love,
O help me to obey;

Send thy good Spirit from above,
To guide me left I ftray.

[ocr errors]

6 Whilft with my heart and tongue
I spread thy praise abroad;
Accept the worship and the fong,
My Saviour and my God.

PSALM XX. Long Metre.

For a day of Prayer in War.

WATTS.

b

NOW may the God of power and grace

Attend his people's humble cry;

Jehovah hears when Ifrael prays,
And fends deliverance from on high.
2. The name of Jacob's God defends
Better than fhields or brazen walls;
He from his fanctuary fends
Succour and strength when Zion calls.
3 Well he remembers all our fighs,
His love exceeds our beft deferts;
His love accepts the facrifice

Of humble groans and broken hearts.

4 In his falvation is our hope,
And in the name of God, the Lord,
Our troops fhall lift their banners up,
Our fhips fhall spread their flags abroad.

5

Some truft in horses train'd for war,

And some of chariots make their boast ;
Our fureft expectations are

From thee, the Lord of heavenly hosts.
6 Save us, O Lord, from guilty fear,
And let our hopes be firm and ftrong;
Till thy falvation fhall appear,
And joy and triumph raise the fong.

PSALM XXI. Long Metre. *

D

The Exaltation of Christ.

AVID rejoic'd in God his ftrength,
Rais'd to the throne by fpecial grace;
But Chrift the Son appears at length,
Fulfils the triumph and the praise.

2 How great is the Meffiah's joy
In the falvation of thy hand!

Lord, thou haft rais'd his kingdom high,
And given the world to his command.
3 Thy goodness grants, whate'er he will,
Nor doth the least request withhold;
Bleflings of love prevent him ftill,
And crowns of glory, not of gold.
4 Honour and majefty divine
Around his facred temples fhine;
Bleft with the favour of thy face,
And length of everlasting days.

PSALM XXII.

Firft Part.

C. M. b

The Sufferings and Glory of Chrift. TOW, in the hour of deep distress,

"N" My God fupport thy SON,

"When horrors dark my foul oppress,
"O leave me not alone!"

2 Thus did our fuffering Saviour pray,
With mighty cries and tears;
God heard him in that dreadful day,
And chas'd away his fears.

3 Great was the victory of his death,
His throne exalted stands;
And all the nations of the earth
Shall bow to his commands.
4 A numerous offspring fhall reward
The Saviour's dying groans;
"I call them," faith the glorious Lord,
"My daughters and my fons."

5 The meek and humble fouls fhall fee
His table richly spread ;

And all that feek the Lord shall be

With joys immortal fed.

PSALM XXII. Second Part. L. M. b

Chrift's Death and Refurection.

row let our mournful fongs record

N The dying forrows of our Lord,

When he complain'd in tears and blood, Like one forfaken of his God.

2 The Jews beheld him thus forlorn, And shook their heads, and laugh'd in scorn "He refcued others from the grave, "Now let him try himself to fave.
