possibly happen to you.

It would give her

no concern to see you poor and destitute in this world, if you were truly born of God, compared with what she would feel, if you were rich and surrounded with the good things of this life, but without faith in Jesus Christ. Do then, my dear boy, "seek first the kingdom of God;" do remember that the promise is sure and may be depended on, "those who seek me early, shall find me.”

It

And now, my dear boy, I must conclude; and what shall I more add, that may induce you to think upon these things? I well know, that without the divine blessing my letter will produce no effect upon you. is my earnest prayer, that you will try to pray for yourself; that you will kneel down in secret, and beg the Lord to have mercy upon you, and teach you by his Holy Spirit to feel your need of his grace, and lead you to Jesus who has invited you to come to him.

Now I have presented you with these Youthful Memoirs" as a birthday gift; and let me entreat you to seek for yourself the most valuable gift, that can ever be bestowed on any person in the world-do you wonder what I mean? I will tell you. I mean the gift of the Holy Spirit. This valuable gift is graciously promised to those who ask it. You asked me to give you a

birthday gift and I was willing to do so, because I hoped it would be for your good; now the word of God says, and I wish you to think upon the verse, "if ye being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father, give the Holy Spirit to those who ask it." Now, my dear boy, let this be the gift you most earnestly desire; be assured if you seek it you shall find it. May your youthful days be spent in the service of God. Let the sweet words of Dr. Watts breathe your desire :

"To thee, Almighty God, to thee,

My childhood I resign;

'Twill please me to look back and see,
That my whole life was thine."

Yes, my dearest boy, that and nothing be-
side will afford you real satisfaction on a
dying bed. For should you live even to be
an hundred years old, and ninety of them
spent in the fear of God, you will never
reret, that you began to serve God so soon:
"Twill save you from a thousand snares,
To mind religion young."

Once more let me remind you how willing Jesus Christ is to receive you; and oh! that you may now in your early days love and serve the God of your Fathers, is the si gere and daily prayer of your

MAN

When employed in the labour of the field, the slaves of both sexes, from twenty, per haps, to fourscore in number, are drawn up in a line, each with a hoe in his hand, and close to them, in the rear, is stationed a driver, or several drivers, in proportion to the number of the gang. These drivers are furnished with a long, thick, and strongly plaited whip, called a cart-whip, each lash of which makes an incision on the back, when the skin is not rendered callous by repeated punishments, and thirty or forty lashes leave them in a dreadfully torn state. The gangs thus disposed, their work begins, and continues. without intermission for a certain number of hours, during which, at the peril of the driver, a certain portion of abour must be performed.

It is the business of the driver, not only to urge forward the whole gang with sufficient speed, but to watch that all in the line, whether male or female, old or young, strong or feeble, work as nearly as possible in equal time, and with equal effect.

Hence it follows, that the weak will be hard pushed to keep up with the strong; and from this cause many negroes are hurried to the grave,

SLAVES DRIVEN TO WORK.

Slaves cannot work in the West Indies as servants do in England. They cannot choose their own masters, and go when they please, and leave off when they please. They must work whether able or no: and sometimes they will be seen driven to work

on the roads, with heavy chains on them, and a cruel driver set over them with a whip to flog them on.

DIALOGUE IV.

Child. Now, dear mother, are you at leisure to answer my questions?

Mother. What have you got to ask me? Ch. You said to me the other day, that I must not only read the Bible to learn how to please God, but that I must ask for his Haly Spirit, to make me good, and to help me. How does the Holy Spirit help me: and how does He make me good?

M. My dear child, I told you that you must pray to God for his Holy Spirit, because you need his grace, and his teaching, and his help, to change your heart, to make you a child of God and to keep you in his way; and the way he does this, is by opening your understanding to understand his Holy Word, by inclining your heart to love it, by bringing it to your remembrance as you need it, by coming down from heaven and taking up his abode in your heart, filling it with peace and joy, as you are found observing his kind and gracious rules, and walking in the ways of God.

Ch. Does GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT come down from heaven to teach me, mother? and yet I cannot see him; he helps me and I never see him; this is very wonderful to me-I do not understand it.

M. It would be much more wonderful to me, if you could see God's Holy Spirit. Ch. Why so, mother?
